GOP bill threatens to cut off US funds to United Nations without massive reforms

Sounds relatively reasonable until I remember how much Republicans hate the U.N. and would like nothing better than to destroy it. Makes me suspicious.

House Republicans
are planning to introduce legislation Tuesday that will force major changes at the United Nations, an organization that the bill’s author has called a “stew of corruption, mismanagement and negligence.”

The bill, by Republican House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, would require the UN adopt a voluntary budget model, in which countries selectively choose which UN agencies to fund.

The bill is expected to be introduced on Tuesday, and will also end funding for Palestinian refugees and limit the use of U.S. funds only to projects directly outlined by Congress.

An aide familiar with the legislation told Bloomberg News that shifting the UN budget to a voluntary system would encourage competition for funds and better performance from UN agencies.

Competition for funds? So basically what they want is the UN to beg them for money so they can control when and where the UN goes in to help. I hope this bill fails miserably, we have already seen what happens when the GOP controls purse strings to things they don’t like, even Disaster Relief isn’t off the table for them. So if you won’t fork over money for disaster relief why would you allow a project to provide say doctors in Rwanda, send in investigators to make sure there are no human rights violations in a “right wing” friendly dictatorship.

The UN is not for profit, should not be run like it’s for profit, and damn sure shouldn’t have to worry about departments competing for funds so that they have to change their mission statement just to get a dime or two

    “Makes me suspicious.”

    Ditto.

Anything AND everything that the Party of Thug and Bully do/does, is ALWAYS suspect.

The real effect will be to emasculate the UN.  there are always projects that are unpopular to groups but make a huge difference to small groups.  those will disappear.
