Republicans push English-only bill, requires language tests

Wonder how many of the Teabaggers would pass?

Republicans in both the House and Senate have introduced legislation that would declare English the official language of the United States and require the development of English language testing guidelines for those applying for U.S. citizenship.

The English Language Unity Act would set out a new chapter in U.S. code that imposes an obligation on U.S. officials to "preserve and enhance the role of English as the official language of the Federal Government."

Part of this chapter would include a "uniform English language rule" holding that "all citizens should be able to read and understand generally the English language text of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the laws of the United States made in pursuance of the Constitution."

To ensure this outcome, the bill would require the secretary of Homeland Security to issue a proposed rule for testing the English language ability of candidates for citizenship. The bill envisions possible exceptions to this standard but says these exceptions "should be limited to extraordinary circumstances, such as asylum."

Good Lord, they really do want to go back to the 50's. They do realize that Princess Sarah would fail this test.

"...development of English language testing guidelines for those applying for U.S. citizenship..."

Erm... its already a (very small) part of the process. The applicant just needs to read a sentence to and write a sentence from the USCIS officer, during the interview.

Oh, I see where this is going: JOBS. We have to hire more people to administer these English tests....and to teach the Republicans what the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the laws of this country REALLY mean.......

Something similar happened in Lino Lakes, MN, last July. The City Council passed an English-only resolution with a vote of 4 to 1. The Mayor also supported the resolution, which included an exception for public safety so the city ordinance wouldn't put its federal public safety grant in jeopardy (Star Tribune http://tinyurl.com/6kude4l ). Just for the record, Lino Lakes is in Michele Bachmann's district.

The Republican candidate for governor, Tom Emmer, was on the record as early as June supporting the Lino Lakes resolution (Star Tribune http://tinyurl.com/235hh2u). He lost, by the way, but still...

One week after Lino Lakes passed its resolution, Tim Pawlenty was asked at a news conference what he thought about the Lino Lakes resolution. He said he believed the state of MN should make English its official language. (Star Tribune http://tinyurl.com/5vac3sj )

On August 2nd, Minnesota Public Radio ran a story which delved into links between supporters of the the Lino Lakes resolution & a national anti-immigration movement. It's a very interesting read and can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/25twgpt

That would stop most Texans, Georgians, Alabamans, Virginians, West Virginians, Arkansans, Louisianans from voting. Their English is so substandard, it's painful to my ears.
