Damien, It's also important to note that the school system that (I believe) you work in utilizes armed police officers in the schools. These aren't security guards but actual officers, correct? Some have stated that in another school shooting there was an armed guard but his being there didn't help.
Many don't know this, the guard was a UNION member and on a union sanctioned break when the violence began.
Your point is taken Stu, and I partially agree. Again, the military uses5.56, not .223. There's a difference between the two. The argument about how many people can be hit in rapid succession seems to be the key point to everyone's argument on this issue. The fact is that with a bolt action rifle, say 30.06, or 7mm mag. I can penetrate 10 or more people with one shot. Shooting this type of weapon can take down just as many with 4-5 rounds.
Also, 5.56 is not considered high caliber as many keep calling it. It is high velocity, more so than say a .45 pistol round. Once you get into the calibers mentioned above you are talking high caliber.
Then we get into the capacity of a magazine (the media keeps referring to a "clip" which is incorrect), what's the difference between 3, 10 round mags, and 1, 30 round mag. Most can change out a magazine in under 2 seconds so in essence all that's been accomplished is adding 6 seconds to the shooters time.
I will definitely agree that changes need to be made, and soon. I don't wish to see any more mass shootings than anyone else. But the changes need to actually accomplish something, not simply quell political affiliations.
Stu you argue that the video was a deceptive demonstration. Maybe you should reevaluate the purpose of the Jessie Duff appearance. She was only trying to inform people of what the damage the different weapons and types of rounds are capable of doing. She is a world champion shooter and trying to inform that not all guns are used for violence. We all know about Sandy Hook but you still resort to reminding us of what happened. Yes it is tragic, but the weapon that was used was only a tool, and to ban a tool does not stop the violence. Maybe there should be more focus on responsibility of gun ownership. The shooters mother knew that he was not mentally stable in fact most of his "friends" and family friends said the same thing. What is disgusting is that she knew that he was unstable and still had the audacity to purchase firearms and train him how to use them. Now I'm sure that I have ruffled your leftist feathers and you are going to call me some pro gun nut case but guess what I am a school teacher who doesn't look at only one side. Yes i believe that the incident is tragic and I couldn't imagine. But I am smart enough to know and understand that guns don't kill people, it is an inanimate object it requires an operator for it to go off.
Yeah Rob I know that one of the reasons they changed from 30 cal to 223 was weight and thereby the amount of ammo that could be carried but the important part of my argument, the damage of the wounds and the ability of an amateur to fire and aim fast holds true. Twenty kids were killed not wounded.
Sorry Stu. The reason the military carries 5.56 (not .223) is due to it's size. One can carry more rounds due to the decreased weight of each round. Also, 5.56 is intended to wound (yes it will certainly kill also) as it takes 2 people to tend to 1 causality on average. That takes out 3 with one shot.
I want to comment on the bogus gun demonstration on last nights show. The size of the entry hole from the 223 bullet is the smallest yes but this bullet tumbles and makes a lot of internal damage and a larger exit wound. It is also a lot easier to shoot and aim multiple shots quickly because of the lower recoil compared to 30 cal and shot gun. There is a reason our arm forces use it almost exclusively, They want to kill lots of people quickly. I was disgusted by this diseptive demonstration.
