Yes Mitt, The Churchill Bust is In The White House Right Now

I've been adamant about the bust still being in the White House since the meme started, so much so that I got huffy with Emily Friedman (@EmilyABC) and Chuck Todd (@ChuckTodd) earlier today about both of them repeating the "It was sent back to the U.K." meme. Ms Friedman promptly put me in my place, sending me a link to this-

Diplomats were at first reluctant to discuss the whereabouts of the Churchill bronze, after its ejection from the seat of American power. But the British Embassy in Washington has now confirmed that it sits in the palatial residence of ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald, just down the road from Vice President Joe Biden's official residence. It is not clear whether the ambassador plans to keep it in Washington or send it back to London.

I ate my words and gave her the win and moved on. Then I see this-

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer blasted back Friday, saying the statue remains in the White House, but has moved positions to a hallway outside the Treaty Room, in the president's residence.

In a blog post on the White House's website, Pfeiffer included an official White House photo of Obama viewing the bust with British Prime Minister David Cameron during a visit in 2010.

"Hopefully this clears things up a bit and prevents folks from making this ridiculous claim again," Pfeiffer wrote.

But late Friday, British Embassy Spokesman James Barbour said there were actually two busts of Churchill, both by artist Sir Jacob Epstein.

The one that was loaned to the George W. Bush administration in 2001 was returned after Bush left office and now resides at the British ambassador's residence in Washington.

A second bust, which is part of the White House's own art collection, is displayed in the White House. It is that bust which Obama is pictured looking at with Cameron in 2010.

So Mittens doesn't have to import the ugly thing back to the U.S. if he wins (shudder), just walk down the hall and move it himself.

Hey Skippy! Paddy did tweet her but never heard back.

  • skippy

did you email back friedman and let her know?

Honestly, the things the fright wing goes off the rails over are just asinine.  They talk about this bust and teleprompters and things like that, but they don't say a damn word about the fact that the GOP is blocking jobs bills that would help put people back to work and improve the economy.  Unbelievable.

Forget it - it was my cache.  Now it's updated.  DUH.  Sorry about that.

I only see $95.  Been like that for days.

Good thing -- he might've put the bust in a pet carrier and strapped it to the top of his car . . .

Why don't you update your fundraiser?  I know it is more that $155 as I donated.
