We Need to Inform Voters About Grover Norquist: Special Comment by my 72-year-old friend

My impassioned 72-year-old (Now 74, but who’s counting?) friend, who goes by the Twitter name @42bkdodgr, would like to share his feelings about informing voters of the effect Grover Norquist has on the GOP. I am more than happy to oblige.

But first, a personal note from 42bkdodgr:

Many of you may wonder why I chose to use the “ 72 year old friend” as the introduction to my Special Comments. I selected the moniker so readers could see that from my age and life experiences I give a different perspective to the issues of today.

Now for his Special Comment:

Need For A Publicity Campaign

Last week I was having dinner with a couple of friends, college educated, who had owned their own businesses. I would consider both independent voters, one probably leaning more towards the Democrats and the other Republicans.

We were talking about President Obama’s jobs program and Republicans lack of interest in creating jobs. They both strongly believed that infrastructure must be done and that it would require the raising of revenue. They couldn’t understand why the Republicans were against that part of the jobs program.

I told them, besides Republicans not wanting to see the economy improve under Obama, which would help him get elected, the majority of Republicans in Congress have signed the Grover Norquist pledge, that under no circumstances would they raise revenues (close tax loop holes or raise taxes) in any shape, form or manner.

They both said, “Who is Grover Norquist”? After being taken aback by their remark, I went on to explain who Grover Norquist was and what hold he had over Republicans in Congress.

I then realized, that the Democrats have lost the publicity campaign on why we need to raise revenues and why Republicans are against it. I then wondered if they where unaware of who Grover Norquist was, how many millions of Americans where also were unaware of him, and the hold he has on the Republicans in Congress.

If the Democratic Party wants to win this war, and yes it is a war, on the Obama’s jobs program, they must begin a national and cable TV advertising campaign. They must make the American public aware of the Norquist Pledge and the impact it is having on the Republican members of Congress and how it is affecting our economic recovery.

Failure to start such a campaign will have a direct effect on our recovery and the re-election of President Obama.

I wonder how many of your family and friends are also unaware of the Grover Norquist Pledge and what their reaction would be when they find out.

Many thanks again for another thorough, relevant piece, 42bkdodgr. You often say what many of us are thinking and feeling, and we thank you for your unique perspective.

Gover Norquist’s pledge is only one thing . . . also, the states that have changed the voting laws calling on Voter ID cards that some folks do not have and will probably not obtain by election time (older folks, really older folks, young college kids going to school in another state) . . . the tremendous amount of negative TV ads that will target all races and key in on the big ones needed by Republicans . . . their keep yelling that they will get rid of Obamacare and how bad it is (I have yet to see any article or show giving positive aspects of Obamacare — this needs to happen soon) . . . changing state voting districts to make sure one party wins as much as possible . . .

I do not know the Democratic response to the above — but maybe it is not in the Democratic DNA to have anti-American pledges, want to change voting laws to benefit one party, and develop mega TV ads, and changing voting districts . . .

I’m as appalled as you when I realize that most people (especially my RW relative here in TN) do not have a CLUE who Norquist, the Kochs, the ALEC, Karl Rove, the #OWS, ….or anybody not mentioned on FOX….actually is or what they do. And yes, they think it’s all a left-wing, unchristian, communist plot. You can’t even debate or make a comment without them looking at you like you’ve got 2 heads. I also get the “oh, that’s right…you used to live up north didn’t you? Like THAT”S the problem…….

We’re in deep doodoo here folks……..

I have said before I have a co-worker who listens to Limbaugh, Savage, Beck, and Levin.  I asked him about Eric Cantor’s power play in the House.  He told me he new very little about Eric Cantor.  But he will tell you all about the evils of President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, ACORN, Rachel Maddow, George Soros, Keith Olbermann, etc.  And pretty soon he will be telling me about the evils of Elizabeth Warren.

Here’s my point.  Even though Elizabeth Warren’s story epitomizes the American dream and who truly stands up for the American people and its constitution she is a big threat (if I may borrow a line) to the “authoritarian corporate security state that the rapacious oligarchs have erected.”

And the Limbaughs, Savages, Becks, and Levins are all part of that Orwellian manipulation machine installed by these oligarchs.  So these people are not going to inform their listeners about people like Grover Norquist and how he completely subverts the the U.S. Constitutional duty that Congress is beholden to its citizens by threatening to have individual members of congress cutoff of funding for reelections or replaced if they don’t follow the bidding of his bosses.  That is nothing more than a mob shakedown.   But they will do all they can to character assassinate a decent, good person like Elizabeth Warren.  Think about it.  And it is the Republicans in Congress that sign this oath.

Oh I have…but I’m told, “You’re making this up!”  ”There is no such person – no one could be THAT powerful!”

The ONE thing I’ve just started doing to try to knock people off their stated beliefs is this:  I ask them, “Have you thought about, ‘what IF someone were that powerful, what would that look like?’”  My brother actually just started coming back to me having thought about that.  He’s starting to see it … I think.

Key is Charlie, to simply inform people assumes we inform REASONABLE people – and they aren’t so much the problem, and in fact, they’re few and far between – God bless them each and every one.

It’s the UNreasonable among us that have stated their opinion and can’t get past it once they have – they’re the dangerous ones, and they’re all over the frickin’ place!
