Poll: More voters would blame Dems for government shutdown

Wow, this so goes against the CW.

Twenty-nine percent of likely voters would blame Democrats for a government shutdown, compared to 23 percent who would hold Republicans responsible, according to a new poll conducted for The Hill.

The results are surprising because most people blamed the GOP for the last government shutdown, which occurred during President Clinton’s first term. A week before the 1995 shuttering, polls showed the public blamed Republicans by a two-to-one-margin.

(snip)

Republicans have a substantial edge among independents: Thirty-four percent would blame Democrats, while only 19 percent would blame the GOP.

However, there are dangers for both parties, the poll indicates. A plurality of voters, 43 percent, would blame both Republicans and Democrats if the lights go out at midnight on March 5. Forty-five percent of respondents said neither party would benefit politically from a shutdown.

This compares to 14 percent who think Democrats would benefit and 18 percent who said Republicans would.

Strikes me the poll also shows that that Dims still haven’t figured out that they can’t wait till a month before N0v. ’12 to start their PR campaign.
The Republicans and baggers and neocos are eating their lunch, breakfast, dinner, and guzzling their after 5 highball PR wise and have been since the 1970′s.

Wake up RIP van Dims its been 40 years already and you have lost two generations PR wise.

Oh, absolutely — the Republicans have positioned themselves well on this. It will be the Democrats fault if Republicans shut down the government, and it will be the Democrats fault if they capitulate and there are massive program cuts across the country.

The Democrats’ choice is shoot working people in the head themselves or Republicans will do it.

Thank goodness there’s finally a poll that will force Dems to be a little concerned about the fallout from any potential shutdown. The assumption by many that this would be some replay of the mid-1990′s seems to be a stretch. Besides there existing key differences in the political environment and the economy (the latter of which is more important), it seems to me that the key difference is the existence of Fox News. While it was around the last time this happened, it was barely on the radar screen. Now, unfortunately, Fox rules our world. I can’t help but believe that their impact on our political discourse will negatively impact the Democrats and Obama this time around.

I’m really not sure how this will turn out, but I’m fairly positive that it won’t be a re-run of 1995-1996.
