Looking for L.A. Times coverage of union protests? See Page 20

Once again, if you are a regular reader, you know I regularly rail against the quality (read: lack of) of media coverage of important news.

Yesterday, I spent a good part of the day tweeting my 140 off about CNN’s and MSNBC’s abysmal lack of reporting.  MSNBC aired its usual reruns of seedy accounts of felons, and CNN graced us with an occasional glance at the hundreds of thousands of caring citizens rallying for their rights. They apparently felt beauty tips by Iman the Model-Slash-BusinessWoman would bring in more ad money. The Cable “News” Network needs a name change.

I made the point that, if only 25 tea baggers had thrown a demonstration instead of the throngs of working people demanding collective bargaining, there would have been 24/7 coverage.

Now, sadly, I have to bring you yet another example of media neglect. In today’s L.A. Times, I had to read through 20– count ‘em, 20– pages before I found this article:

Protesters out in force nationwide to oppose Wisconsin’s anti-union bill

This is one big fat major news story. It’s huge. It involves not only wage battles, budget battles and party battles, but the battle for and against the middle class, unions, the Democratic party, and democracy itself. It deserves more than a few paragraphs on page 20 of a major U.S. newspaper.

But at least Page One had a story about the Oscars.

Sadly, the corporations control what the media says, does and reports on. They run the ads, and then tell their media outlets who they want ‘on’ air or who they want ‘kicked off’, or they will pull their ads. This controls all media, even if they don’t directly own them, such as Faux News….

What is not good for profits, is not shown, or given short shrift, (herbs, homeopathy, unions, cooperatives, non profits, etc.). Out of all of the major news networks this Sunday, most did not show any Democrats in their newscast, but all of them had extensive coverage of Republicans and their point of view, which is anti labor, anti human rights, anti union, anti middle class.

The rule for equal time in all media (giving equal time to both sides in a news item or political debate) was done away with by Republicans, at the request of their corporate ‘handlers’. It has not come back.. No one seems to even miss it.

Now the mass media can show only one side of the debate and call it ‘fair and balanced’, as Faux News does..

At least something was written. In my hometown, Springfield, IL, there was no mention of our local rally nor anything national. The front page did have a story on the new layout of the newspaper and how its production is being moved to Peoria. That little move will lay off about 50 people locally.

Actually it’s not leftists, and what they’re defending is the *status quo*, not some new-fangled ‘left turn’ in politics, but a maintenance of bargaining rights that have existed for decades.

Obviously you weren’t there and don’t know what you’re talking about. The rally I was at in New Mexico, was not only not a “temper tantrum”, but was about as multi-racial as possible. Quite in contrast to the astro-turfed, Koch-funded lilly-white teaparty faux protests.

You had a bunch of leftists in a pre-staged temper tantrum at various locations, all of whom were whiter than a tea party rally is alleged to be. Not really news worthy.

I’ve written to Greg Palast and AlJazzera asking them to cover this story. I need to write to BBC International too.

It seems the US media has forgotten their praise for the media coverage out of Egypt and how that honest, accurate media coverage led to informed and necessary change………

The SF Chronicle has it on page A11 with A14 being the end of the section in the front page. The second section which is the local news, there was a picture on the 2nd page saying more than 200 showed up. But I was there and I say it was more like a 1000 people as many people were coming and going and a block away there were the Libya protesters. On my way there I spoke to several people who were not even aware of this as it had been planned 2 days previously. I wonder if it was pumped up like the tea parties would it have been covered? I also searched them cable channels and Fox did cover it but made it look like the attendance was sparse. Social Media is the way we are going to win because the corporate media ain’t gonna cover us.
