After the recent onslaught of GOP/tea party insanity, an occasional helping hand would be awfully welcome. As I’ve watched the Democrats flounder, sputter, make some headway, retreat, attack, brainstorm, kvetch, bellow, struggle, and sink under the weight of the Republican-loving Citizens United money bags, I’ve yearned for a way to fight back.
Then along comes David Brock with his Media Matters Money Matters Moment of Wow. He’s fighting fire with fire, or rather, dollars with dollars. He’s putting together an outside group to counter that pesky cash that conservative groups like Karl Rove’s American Crossroads GPS, among others, have collected to outspend the Dems.
This could be just what the doctor ordered. Via Greg Sargent:
[David] Brock is a major Beltway player, and if his effort gains traction, it could have a real impact on the 2012 campaigns, helping to offset the lopsided advantage conservative groups are expected to enjoy. It’s also a sign that Washington’s power liberal types are getting serious about figuring out how to navigate the new, post-Citizens United landscape, which has clearly put them at a disadvantage.
More broadly, the shift suggests that the brand of media criticism practiced by Media Matters is shading into outright guerrilla-style political activism against conservative groups and right wing media outlets alike…
