VIDEO from MSNBC interviewing Rep. Giffords in March 2010, after Sarah Palin “targeted” her district seat.
MSNBC talks to Rep. Gabrielle Gifford about the death threats, vandalism and harassments. Aired 3/25/10.
“Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they’ve gotta realize there are consequences to that action.”
UPDATE: MSNBC… GIFFORDS EXPECTED TO PULL THRU: PER DEPUTY CITY MANAGER! Name of Gunman: Jared Loughner, 22. He is from Arizona, a U.S. citizen. He used a pistol with an extended magazine, has had run-ins with the law in the past.
UPDATE, Press Conference: 5 in critical, 5 in stable condition as of now, per news conference. 10 patients received, one patient, 9 year old child, is dead. Some in surgery. Giffords in critical condition, but doctor is “optimistic” about recovery. She is following commands, shot once through the head, brain. Not sure of “what kind of recovery”, but very optimistic considering. Under anesthesia now. Next 24 hours will tell more.
At least 13 people were injured. One suspect in custody.
UPDATE: Rep. Raul M. Grijalva today released the following statement on the shooting of his colleague, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona:
“I am sickened by the horrific attack in Tucson today and saddened by this senseless violence. This is a tragedy for Arizona, our nation, and our democracy. Gabrielle never let fear or intimidation prevent her from serving the people of Arizona. My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her husband Mark, her staff, all those who were injured, and their families.”
Rodney Glassman’s statement:
I am shocked by today’s tragic events. On behalf of my family, we are praying for Gabrielle and the other victims of today’s senseless violence. Gabrielle Giffords is a great asset to Southern Arizona and on a more personal note, a friend and colleague that I greatly respect.
I ask all Arizonans to join me in a prayer for Gabrielle Giffords. To my Democratic colleagues, I urge caution in placing blame. We must wait for the facts before pointing fingers. To my fellow citizens on the other side of the political aisle, I ask that you stand strong, shoulder to shoulder, with your Democratic friends against dangerous, violent rhetoric that threatens our democracy.
The second one was grabbed by a Twitter pal and is now gone, from what I can tell. The other I screen grabbed. UPDATE: I’m being told that the second one could be a forgery, that it doesn’t match his usual stream. Fair is fair. UPDATE #2: To clarify, evidence is lacking as to whether Kerr’s comment has been forged or is actually his. I have had a reputable journalist verify that she did see it up at Palin’s Facebook page, but it seems to have been pulled… which gives credence to its being a fake. And it does make me wonder who might have chosen to use his name to communicate such a vile message. I cannot verify either way.
UPDATE: Looks like it wasn’t a forgery after all, but a decent guy who made an error in judgment:
UPDATE: This was reported by Local AZ press, whether true or not. So much has been wrong, but that happens when news is breaking: Second suspect arrested in Gibbons shooting and a third is being sought.
PLEASE NOTE: I AM EDITING THE BLOG TITLE AS NEWS COMES IN.
UPDATE: Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, Statement:
“I am deeply saddened by reports that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Chief Judge John Roll and others were attacked this afternoon in Tucson, Arizona. There is no place in our society or discourse for such senseless and unconscionable acts of violence. Gabby is a steadfast representative for southern Arizona and both she and John are dedicated public servants.”
UPDATE: Paddy just heard Shep Smith interview AZ State Senator Lopez, close friend of Giffords’. Lopez was talking about tea party and threats made toward Giffords in the last election; she had a tea party opponent… said horrible things were written about her on signs all over the city. Smith asked about shooter, and was told, not confirmed, the shooter was a veteran of the Afghan War. State Senator confirmed the shooter yelled something as he was shooting, didn’t know what he said.
Per Keith Olbermann, she is out of surgery.
MSNBC: The shooter is in his 20s, came up from behind, shot her in the head. Got off at least 20 rounds…
On the tragedy in Arizona My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

NPR, CNN now reporting about “conflicting” accounts.
U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.
Giffords, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
She was hospitalized, and her condition is unknown as of now. At least 5 others were hurt.
She was at a grocery store for an event. At a damned grocery store.
A man, who ran up and just started randomly shooting, was taken into custody.
UPDATE: Per CNN, 12 were shot, including staff. It’s called “pretty serious.” She’s only 40 years old.
UPDATE: H/t: YesBiscuit on Twitter: She was on Palin’s “target” map. How are those Second Amendment Remedies workin’ for ya, Sarah?
UPDATE: Per a report on CNN, the shooter has not been apprehended. So we have conflicting reports. They are also reporting that there are fatalities. 15-20 shots were fired, all at once, no pauses.
UPDATE, h/t: rollingingraves… Fox’s Greta Van Susteren didn’t miss a chance to exploit this:
This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tuscon, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. And while we are continuing to receive information, we know that some have passed away, and that Representative Giffords is gravely wounded.
We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.
