The president of FAIR (Federation of American Immigration Reform), Dan Stein, was on the Rachel Maddow Show. It was brutal.

Because of this interview (read: tussle; read: battle; read: slaughter), we have a new word: “Steined”… as in, “You’ve been Steined by Rachel Maddow”.

Witness the peerless Rachel “Stein” Stein:

I don’t think ol’ Dan thought Rachel was being… FAIR. Oh, the irony.

UPDATE: The Maddow Blog is already fact checking him here.

Bull puckey, he used the same tactics as in football ………stall, stall , stall with a minute on the clock so I don’t have to come away a LOSER ! But he did !

  • Insightquest

Frankly i though he took over her show. Maddow lost a bit of control and he talked much more than she did. Come on Maddow, grow a pair.
    =======================================================================

I agree, however, I wish they had talked about Arizona's Immigration Law a bit more. She should have known once she start asking questions as she did, it would turn into a situation where Mr. Stein would have to defend himself. It was a bad show of behavior on Rachel's behalf.

It should be noted that Dan Stein has gone on to become a respected spokeman on the issue of illegal immigration and the American people support the Arizona Illegal Immigration bill by about 74%. So, who destoryed who?

  • Richard

Joe McCarthy went after people through inaccurate facts and guilt by assocation. Ms Maddows interview wasn't about Mr. Stein, it was about the organization he is the head of. How is backing PAN who had as it's main spokespersons a white sepretist not germain? How is someone on thier board of directors who has made racial remarks and accepted money from a white eugenics site not germain? How are two of its last 3 western regional directors beloning to white sepretists groups not germain to who wrote the language of bill 1070, and what thier goals are>

  • Richard

my response was the same initially. Until I realized that Ms Maddow wasn't asking questions about people Mr. Stein was assocating with… she was asking questions about people who work for FAIR, who shape its policy, and who represent it. How is having white seperatists, or people who speak of “white” people as a political block that needs to defend itself NOT germain to the subject of who wrote 1070, and what thier end goals are?

  • Richard

That Mr. Trenton is on the board of directors and has never rectracted his racist statements is yes, relevant. That FAIR spent a quarter of a million dollars to back PAN, who's main spokesperson is a white sepratist is relevant. That two of it's last 3 western regional represenatives belong to white sepratist organization is relevant. How can one not question the goals of FAIR when some of its most influential personel are white sepratists or make such statements? The “real” topic is, why was 1070 written the way it was, with ethnicity and race listed as the only described criteria?

  • Richard

Mr. Trenton is still on the board of FAIR, what he said 20 years ago was never retracted, so yes, it is still relevant. Supporting PAN to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars, when one of it's main represenatives was a white sepratist is yes, relevant. That two of it's last 3 western regional directors belong to white sepratist groups is yes, relevant.

    huh?

  • mully

couldn't agree more, using irrelavent information from 20 years ago is not the truth nor is it good journalism. Furthermore i believe he answered the questions fairly and accurately, while i watched her struggle to provide more smear from so called facts she printed off the internet. No real question were asked about the real topic and he made her look elementary. She was by far overmatched.

  • matt

He had facts, face it she got owned and was truly overmatched

  • SouthernGirl2

With regret, I believe that it is Ms. Maddow, not Mr. Stein, who would fear a rematch.

Fear? Rachel Maddow? You've got to be kidding. Rachel Maddow fears no one! Dan Stein thought he could come on her show and run over her with talking points but he got tricked. Girlfriend did her homework. Big Up, Rachel!

  • SouthernGirl2

    Tell it!

  • Walt

The problem, dm, is their are many racists out there who don't realize they are racists. And that, in no way, means I am suggesting you are racist. I'm just saying, sometimes, misplaced righteousness is, in reality, righteous ignorance.

  • SouthernGirl2

    True!

He tried to talk over her with his loud mouth but Rachel did her homework and worked it out!

  • SouthernGirl2

Yes she did! She destroyed his ass!

    Go Rachel, Go!

  • dm

I'm a greying leftist, not an agent provacateur, and probably further to the left and more of an activist than most folks. I'm also a journalist. That's why I disliked the interview so much; it reminded me of something I'd see on Fox. Go back and watch again, then compare the interview to archival footage of Joe McCarthy.

With regret, I believe that it is Ms. Maddow, not Mr. Stein, who would fear a rematch.

It's interesting how folks can watch the same thing and take away completely different takes, no?

  • Marnie

I think some of these slugs are so used to being interviewed by Fox or "journalist" from the Republican owned media that they really have no context for understanding what happens when your talk nonsense to someone who is intelligent and well informed and who does not accept the RepoTaliban's money and so does not have to accept empty talking points.

  • GF

you have got to kidding. He would not let her get a word in. Then, I went back and check what he said. He lied through his teeth.

She was professional. He just did everthing that he could to avoid the truth.

  • Derek Allen

Frankly i though he took over her show. Maddow lost a bit of control and he talked much more than she did. Come on Maddow, grow a pair.

  • Walt

Yes she did. How ironic… the corporate media with the right wing media, pushing the buttons all the way, taking down ACORN, a legitimate, non-profit group working in the name of humanity and fairness. Meanwhile, a racist organization (come on… whose kidding who?) disguised as a righteous ignorant organization helps write a state law (that makes no sense when you understand the intricacies of the bill), somehow, is outraged when they are subjected to the test of honesty.

  • GG

Ha ha…Good one. Tea-Party meeting end early?

I've watched Maddow since the beginning and this was by FAR her biggest rip. Stein came across as a bumbling defender of racists which is what he is.

I'll tell you one thing…there's no way Stein EVER appears on her show again. He doesn't have the guts number one and number two why? She will just make him look like an idiot again!

  • Rosanne

There is nothing better than watching a WOMAN put a cocky, bigoted, racist male in "his place." You did every woman proud tonight!

  • dm

We must have been watching a different interview. I am an enormous fan of Ms. Maddow. But the gentleman from FAIR was right; Maddow's tactics were reminiscent of Joe McCarthy. It was painful to watch someone I admire so much try to tar this group (racist or not) with tenuous associations from twenty years ago. She did not destroy him. Quite the opposite.

  • SouthernGirl2

OMG! Is Dan Stein able to walk? Rachel ripped him to shreds! She tore him a new one!

    OOPS!

  • GG

My God…..she destroyed him. Let's see, FAIR surrounds itself with, and hires, admitted racists but that doesn't mean FAIR is racist. Ummm, right.

I bet Hannity and Beck have him on next week to tell the sheep what a great American he is. Have a big flag behind him and talk about the troops while singing God Bless America.
