"I came from Nazi Germany in 1936 and was blessed with citizenship papers... I shudder to think what might have happened to me had Rohrabacher been in charge..."

US map immigration diversity

The following is a response to the article referenced in my previous post GOP Rep. “Rohrabacher’s face turned red, she said, adding that he said he represents citizens and hates illegals.”

Again, allow me to refresh your memory about who exactly California’s Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is:

Anderson Cooper Whumps Rep Rohrabacher On Benghazi “What You’re Saying Is Factually Not Correct”

GOP Congressmen: Iraq War a “horrible mistake…Everybody” thinks so.  Surprise! It turns out it was just a big ol’ GOP oopsie! (Maybe he should watch this VIDEO– Hubris: Selling the Iraq War. BushCo saw an opportunity and took it, and took us.)

And just for giggles: Dana Rohrabacher surfin’ and singin’. Not kidding.

And with that, here is today's L.A. Times letter to the editor, because our voices matter:

Re "Pathway to citizenship likely to be rocky in D.C.," Feb. 19

Just because Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) — who said, "Just because you are a wonderful person doesn't mean you deserve to be an American citizen" — had the luck to be born here should not give him the right to deny citizenship to a person who has lived here for most of her life, is in college and will in all likelihood become a productive member of her community, paying taxes and contributing to the well-being of those around her.

I wasn't born here; I came from Nazi Germany in 1936 and was blessed with citizenship papers at age 20. I shudder to think what might have happened to me had Rohrabacher been in charge of granting or denying me citizenship

Dana rohrabacher

Allow me to refresh your memory about who exactly California's Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is:

Anderson Cooper Whumps Rep Rohrabacher On Benghazi “What You’re Saying Is Factually Not Correct”

GOP Congressmen: Iraq War a "horrible mistake…Everybody" thinks so.  Surprise! It turns out it was just a big ol’ GOP oopsie! (Maybe he should watch this VIDEO– Hubris: Selling the Iraq War. BushCo saw an opportunity and took it, and took us.)

But you know what isn't funny? Rohrabacher's long record of voting against measures like a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.. His disgusting attitude literally brought one in particular, a teenage girl who was raised here but born in Mexico, to tears.

L.A. Times:

When Jessica Bravo came here this month to talk to her congressman, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach), about expanding rights for illegal immigrants, their meeting ended in a shouting match and tears.

Bravo, an 18-year-old community college student at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, was smuggled over the border from Mexico by her parents when she was 3. She recently joined hundreds of other young illegal immigrants in a campaign to confront members of Congress and ask them to vote for a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants. [...]

In the scheduled meeting with Rohrabacher, Bravo said the congressman stiffened when she said she and her parents came to the U.S. unlawfully. Five minutes into the meeting, Rohrabacher's face turned red, she said, adding that he said he represents citizens and hates illegals.

Of course, Rohrabacher denies that ever happened, saying the meeting turned nasty when "a community organizer with Bravo implied he was racist."

Maybe it was Rohrabacher himself who implied he was racist. Just a thought.

But see, a community organizer was present. In his narrow mind that explains everything. Next thing you know, he'll accuse the now-defunct ACORN of setting him up to look like an intolerant, bigoted, xenophobic villain, forging Jessica Bravo's name on eleventy-two voting registration form, and throwing the meeting.

Republicans push English-only bill, requires language tests

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Wonder how many of the Teabaggers would pass?

Republicans in both the House and Senate have introduced legislation that would declare English the official language of the United States and require the development of English language testing guidelines for those applying for U.S. citizenship.

The English Language Unity Act would set out a new chapter in U.S. code that imposes an obligation on U.S. officials to "preserve and enhance the role of English as the official language of the Federal Government."

Part of this chapter would include a "uniform English language rule" holding that "all citizens should be able to read and understand generally the English language text of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the laws of the United States made in pursuance of the Constitution."

To ensure this outcome, the bill would require the secretary of Homeland Security to issue a proposed rule for testing the English language ability of candidates for citizenship. The bill envisions possible exceptions to this standard but says these exceptions "should be limited to extraordinary circumstances, such as asylum."
