Quinnipiac:

Eighteen months before the 2014 elections, American voters, by a slim margin, say they are more likely to vote Democratic than Republican for Congress, which would violate the historical model of the president’s party losing ground in the sixth year of a presidency, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

If elections for Congress were held today, 41 percent of voters say they would vote Democratic for Congress and 37 percent say they would vote Republican, continuing a trend that began after an April 19, 2012, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University showing Democrats at 40 percent and Republicans at 39 percent.

Works for me.

gop obstruction smaller

Because of his support of gun safety legislation, Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) has watched his approval ratings soar. They are now at the highest they’ve ever been, as opposed to say, Kelly Ayotte’s. According to a Qunnipiac Poll, 85 percent of Pennsylvanians approved of his and Senator Manchin’s gun background check proposal.

You know what at least 85 percent of Americans should DISapprove of? This, via the Times Herald:

“In the end it didn’t pass because we’re so politicized. There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it,” Toomey said.

In subsequent comments, he tried to walk that remark part-way back by noting he meant to say Republicans across the nation in general, not just those in the Senate.

“The toughest thing to do in politics is to do the right thing when your supporters think the right thing is something else,” Toomey said.

Hey America, open your eyes. This is what the GOP is all about: Obstruction, hate, and self-interest. They care nothing about what we want, they ignore the polls and the wishes of many of their constituents because of their disdain for President Obama.

Gee, I wonder what about him they find so distasteful… I can’t imagine, because he’s compromised, he’s put forward many of their own plans and ideas, so think… think… what could it be?

obama one of these things is not like the others different

Hey Republicans, how’s that GOP reachy-outy, makeovery, reinventiony thing workin’ for ya?

climate change Congress

organizingforaction (the group that came together to support President Obama’s political agenda post-election):

The science on climate change is clear, but too many members of Congress are in complete denial. It’s time to call them out: http://OFA.BO/1BggUG

Message from Organizing for Action, to Congress: You can’t be that ignorant. No, seriously. Shame on you.

No matter what part of climate change the ignorami in Congress fail grasp, or why, how can they object to cleaning up the air we breathe and the water we drink? I’m betting they could even make a profit doing that, which is really all they care about anyway, no matter who they hurt, deprive, or sicken in the process.

Via The Guardian:

The video mainly features Republican members of the House of Representatives who are notorious for denying the existence of climate change, or positing bizarre notions about its causes.

However, it also includes some national figures such as the Florida senator Marc Rubio and House speaker John Boehner, whose views on climate are not that broadly known.

Sad Days: Special Comment by my 75-year-old friend

congress senate vote against gun background checks

My impassioned “72-year-old”  friend (who is now 75, but who’s counting?), who goes by the Twitter name @42bkdodgr, would like to share his feelings about how many of our most pathetic Congress members have handled this country’s tragic events. I am more than happy to oblige.

But first, a personal note from 42bkdodgr:

Many of you may wonder why I chose to use the “72 year old friend” as the introduction to my Special Comments. I selected the moniker so readers could see that from my age and life experiences I give a different perspective to the issues of today.

Now for his Special Comment:

Sad Days

In my life time I have experienced many sad days for our country, some of these are, but not all are:

  • Assassination of President John F.Kennedy
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King
  • Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy
  • Tragedy of 9/11
  • Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy
  • Mass Shootings: Long Island Railroad (1993), Columbine High School (1999), Fort Hood (2009), Tucson, Arizona (2011), Aurora Movie Theatre (2012), Sikh Temple (2012), Newtown School (2012)
  • Boston Marathon (2013)
  • West, Texas Explosion (2013)

All of the above events resulted to death and injury of many Americans and non-Americans, that have affected and changed the lives of many people and our country.

I know, the way our government operates has changed over the years, with the growth of lobbyists and the amount of money in our political system; but yesterday I saw the death of my country that I was brought up to know and love.

Yesterday was another sad day for me and America. When over 90% of Americans favored a bill that would expand gun background checks of gun sales, made at gun shows and over the Internet, was defeated by a group of Senators who had more loyalty to the NRA and gun manufacturers than to the American people.

That group of Senators showed that the revered words of their most famous Republican, President Abraham Lincoln– that we are a “government of, by and for the people”– no longer has any meaning to them. To them we are now a government of, by and for the 1% and the big corporations.

To Rand Paul I say, the only props used in the gun legislation debate where you and the other Senators who voted against the wishes of your constituents to support the gun manufacturers.

We need to get back to the type of government that was expressed by President Lincoln. That can only be done by voting out members of Congress who don’t represent their constituents and reverse the Citizens United decision. I have faith that this can be done and then enact sane and sensible gun laws, without taking away the 2nd amendment rights of Americans.

Many thanks again for another thorough, relevant piece, @42bkdodgr. You often say what many of us are thinking and feeling, and we thank you for your unique perspective.

congress on vacation break recess

Another guest post is by our pal and regular TPC contributor, David Garber:

Thank You, Congress

Congress has it right.  They consistently turn a deaf ear to the people they represent.  Why listen to us?

After all, if you would let the public’s opinion sway things, consider the many ways life would dramatically change. (oh, and feel free to add to this list of ills we’d be perpetrating on ourselves if given just half a chance.) We can’t be trusted because left to our own devices, we would be demanding:

  • No touching Social Security
  • No touching Medicare
  • No oil company bailouts
  • No too large to fail or jail banks
  • No gerrymandering of voting districts
  • No warrant-less reading of our emails
  • No war in Afghanistan
  • No torture
  • No off-shore tax haven accounts
  • No tax write-offs for shipping jobs overseas
  • No tax breaks for yachts
  • No interference in the privacy of our bedrooms
  • No tax breaks for private Jets
  • No tax-less corporations like G.E.
  • No polluted air
  • No more secret and unaccountable defense spending of billions
  • No more free wars
  • No unreasonable filibuster.  Standing filibuster only.
  • No blocking investment in alternative fuels
  • No unnecessary forced ultrasound for pregnant women

And while losing all that, think of what we’d be burdening ourselves with, demanding:

  • Jobs bills
  • A reasonable Minimum Wage
  • Full recognition for same-sex marriage
  • Improved infrastructure
  • Legalized, taxed and regulated marijuana, like liquor
  • A full citizenship path for undocumented workers
  • Strict gun control
  • National fair voter registration laws
  • Tariffs on imported goods when fair trade is violated
  • Clean air
  • Fair and equal pay for Women
  • Abortion rights as upheld by Roe v. Wade
  • Restored relations with Cuba
  • Election funding reform — limits
  • Accountability with foreign aid distribution
  • Sane banking laws
  • Abolishment of lobbyists
  • Open competition in pharmaceutical markets

Congress please — protect us from ourselves…

Thank the good lord we have the likes of John “The Boner” Boehner, Eric “Banter” Cantor, Rand “Ru” Paul, Paul “Ayn Rand” Ryan, Michele “Bonkers” Bachmann and Mitch “TheBitch” McConnell to look out for us.  Oh, and if Harry “Creepy” Reid ever wakes up from his coma, let’s thank him too.

thumbs down

gallup

Gee, ya think their low approvals have anything to do with things like the tweet from Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) saying, “Our campaign bumper sticker: If babies had guns, they wouldn’t be aborted”? Or Congress’s inability to pass decent gun legislation? Or the Paycheck Fairness Act? Or the constant GOP obstruction? Or Harry Reid’s broken promises to reform filibuster? Or the plethora of anti-abortion bills instead of jobs bills? Or taking so much time off instead of doing the people’s work?

And that’s just for starters.

Gallup:

As Congress debates legislation on gun control, immigration reform, and the federal budget, it continues to get a vote of no confidence from the American people. Fifteen percent of Americans now approve of the way Congress is handling its job, essentially unchanged from 13% in March and 15% in February. Congress’ disapproval rating is 79%. [...]

Congress’ approval remained low at 15% in April, and is still at the low end of the historical trend. Americans’ low approval likely contributes to their overwhelming support for members of Congress to voluntarily return part of their salary as a result of sequestration.

guns daily news cover newtown assault weapons ban

Another guest post is by our pal and regular TPC contributor, David Garber:

Bring Out The Big Guns

So the tiny NRA membership — compared to the total electorate — can hold our country’s safety hostage. Elected officials are afraid if they vote for common sense vs. true security they will lose their jobs. Logic disconnect.

So let me see if this adds up — a vote against the NRA’s stand against gun control of any kind, not gun repossession, but control, means that you won’t be reelected? Okay, if I buy into that, then nothing else these elected officials do, matters. No other bill until the end of their term is of consequence, because only this outcome will determine whether or not they get returned to Congress? Bullpucky. Since when is someone elected for a term and only judged on one vote?

Sorry, if you vote along with the NRA, but vote for some other issue, like immigration or health reform or on a budget, women’s rights, or protecting voters rights, constituents will take that into consideration too. So buck up and do what’s right, not what the NRA tells you.

No one’s taking your guns or rifles away — they’re preventing unnecessary ownership of non-essential, yet very dangerous munitions. What hunter needs a semi-automatic with a 30 round clip? Ten’s enough — if you can’t bag your prey with 10 shots, you shouldn’t be handling a rifle anyway. And if it’s protection you want, if you can’t hit two or more attackers with 10 shots, what makes you think you’ll have more luck with 30 shots? You’ll be dead by your assailants long before you get off shot 5.

Want to end this madness by the NRA minority? Vote out every incumbent who votes against the assault weapons ban. Vote out every incumbent who votes against the limits on ammo clips size. Remember Sandy Hook. Virginia Tech. Columbine. And sadly so many others.

Bring out your bazooka — your vote. Dump the Chump who is promoting your harm, ignoring your protections. Make your voice heard. Silence in this case is guilt for the next massacre. Call or email your congressman and senator. It’s easy. Grieving over a lost loved one is hard.
