Senator Gillibrand Rips the Curtain Back on Sexism and Political Jane Crow

Share

WTF_w364h202

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has released a book revealing some of The Old Boys Club peccadillos, and they are legion. Near-legendary, as sexism goes.

"Please don't lose too much weight now, I like my girls chubby,' was supposed to be a Senate collee compliment … and the kicker was, he had his hand on the Lady Senator's stomach while he gave her the 'compliment', then proceeded to clearly want to take her measurements.

The Washington Post minced no words to publicly reprimand the behavior, or cycle of behavior as I like to think of it because this is a situation that needs to be temporary, reformed and shaken down for corruption as well as a conscience and a few residual morals.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) has a new book coming out, "Off the Sidelines," and has been making the media rounds to promote it. The New York Post highlighted parts of the book today, in an article titled, "Gillibrand: Male colleagues called me ‘porky’ after baby."

As awful as that headline is, things get worse in the book, according to the story. One quote in particular stands out. Gillibrand reveals that one male Senator, after she lost about 50 pounds, came up behind her and gave her waist a squeeze. “Don’t lose too much weight now," he told her. "I like my girls chubby.” She says that he was one of her favorite senators(!).

As Gillibrand's title infers, the book goes into detail about the things that women in politics still have to deal with that their male counterparts, well, don't.

It's high freaking time this book was written, and may it encourage other professional and non-professional truths to sort through about just where the proverbial buck stops on this issue.

IQ

Some told of senators ogling women on the Senate floor or watching porn on iPads and on state-owned computers, of legislators hitting on female staffers or using them to help them meet women, and of hundreds of little comments in public and private that women had to brush off to go about their day. Some said they often felt marginalized and not listened to—that the sexism in the Legislature made their jobs harder and, at times, produced public policy hostile to women.

Yet, despite their strong feelings, women in the Capitol rarely talk about, except in the most private discussions, the misogyny they see all the time. It’s just the way the Legislature has always been.

Gillibrand surely isn't alone in having to deal with such comments with her male colleagues at the Capitol, although some of her encounters are jaw-droppingly bad/offensive. When she was still in the House, a Southern representative told her, “You know, Kirsten, you’re even pretty when you’re fat."

IforgotIonlyexist

Morning Joe Schmoe and Morning Mika et al gave that a look-see -- let's hope the media does grab on with four hands to get this information out there, and that women and men sit up and see the regressive elephant hogging all the space and oxygen in the room.

This goes deeper than reflexive Hillary-type bashing, after the stats we have heard about sexual assault on both sexes in the military, and now have a sitting Senator's word for the attitude in the highest legislative body in the land.

Once again, humiliated a bit by fellow Americans.

The GOP: belly-aching, bloviatin', bitchin' an' a' hatin' = #NoTeaForYou

hatePBO

The Right does little but belly-ache and b i t c h about the current Administration and his Pinko Commie, Arugula Munching Lacker of Feck, related non-deserved and hatin' hatin' hatin' on him for being audacious enough to accept being a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Head Satan of Obamacare, Perpetrator o Impeachable Offenses and Unpresident-like.

And they have ruined tea for many a liberal, Independent (we still have those, right?) and common sense voter.

This is excruciatingly embarrassing, even for the Grand Old Party of Tea. Spite evolved to a powerful lotta' hate fer' the spurious, specious even for the Regressive Right and utter Bizarro World Orwellian (h/t to Lucian) … and the marked Dovish Lack of Cajones for passing on the whole GOP (newest)Gun Fondling craze.

stilladick

#NoTeaForYou … the Do Nothings have made Inactivity the norm, the status quo for as far the eye can see. The GOP was far more tolerant, thoughtful and intelligent in days of yore.

I'm a life-long tea drinker, great-grand-exponentially-mothered, and my corpus hasn't enjoyed the cafè in twenty years so it's even more of a a kick in the old scones. I've not bought Lipton since I started referring to the Tea People as the Lipton Brigadiers. (And that's perfectly fine for iced tea if you add to it or for the odd nut who wants de-caf-wtf. At dawn.

I fear our prime years as bloggers and those who read our scribblings and comment/expand the grass roots enthusiasm and numbers for us. In other words, The Teatonic Era, Doris Kerns Goodwin's granddaughters will analyze it from a woman's P.O.V. Hope she has a Bean clamming outfit and a hose-sprayered gallon or two of our Method™ Troll Spray.

thanks, obama

I'll just leave a short quote and some relevant idiot footage here, see you on the other side. Happy Monday Monday.

In an op-ed published Wednesday by the New York Times, columnist Charles M. Blow destroyed the recent assertion by Republican Congressman Mo Brooks that Democrats and President Obama are waging a war against white people. During an appearance on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham’s show on Monday, Brooks claimed that the Democratic Party is using a strategy to divide everyone by race and show that “whites hate everybody else.” After Ingraham had played a clip from Ron Fournier of the National Journal saying that the GOP has a real problem with Hispanics and that it is becoming the party of white people, Brooks made the following comments:

“This is a part of the war on whites that’s being launched by the Democratic Party. And the way in which they’re launching this war is by claiming that whites hate everybody else. It’s part of the strategy that Barack Obama implemented in 2008, continued in 2012, where he divides us all on race, on sex, greed, envy, class warfare, all those kinds of things.”

Balderdash. [Re Ingraham. How in holy hades did Olbermann stand dating her more than one time, and presumably, they had conversations? That was leaning forward a slosh too far.

For some audio footage that might best be heard by helping yourself to a sedative of your choice in the TPC walk-in med closet, here 'ya go. From Right Wing Watch via Politics USA.

Obama gets shite if he sends troops anywhere other than American bases, from both right and the deeply pacifist (yay for us) Dems and Independents. The artwork below I found spot on, though I feel Boehner is perhaps more of a fiddle fellow.

The Morning Schmoe Roundtable had their antlers up.

If you look closely you can just spot the tear of lament on Bo(eh)ner's patriotic to the max face.

President Obama Stumping For the Middle Class in Kansas City #StopHatin

Share

oz we're not in kansas any more
So what has the GOP done for you lately? Obama himself pointed out that the only thing Congress seems to be producing right now is rancor and obstructionism.

President Obama hit it out of the hypothetical park in Kansas City, calling for the GOP to do Something. Anything. "Work with me!"

And that this lawsuit business is but a "political stunt'.

Something about Kansas (the BBQ?) had really relaxed the under-siege, in the crosshairs of the current Congressional litigious 'acting out' … liturgy after liturgy after bloody liturgy.

IQ

President Obama had some quips that will stay with you.

KCTV5

"I know they're not that happy that I'm president, but that's OK," he said. "Come on. I've only got a couple of years left. Come on, let's get some work done. Then you can be mad at the next president."

johnO

E.J. Dionne explained today that issue goes beyond "the open demands for throwing Obama out from Sarah Palin, Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Tex.) and many others on the right wing. The deeper problem lies in the proliferation of loose impeachment talk linked with one overheated anti-Obama charge after another."

Jonathan Capehart expressed the absurdity with such aplomb and wit it's worth the whole read.

The plan all along has been to crash the Obama agenda and then climb on top of the wreckage and seize power. Not only are Republicans complicit in the “failures” they rail against, but they are also the reason the president has had to resort to executive action to get some things done. Even Will agrees Obama is within his authority to do this. He just doesn’t like the degree to which he has done it. Poor dear.

President Obama did a memorable job of telling us precisely what he thought of the Regressive Right's foaming at the mouth and ability to simply make shite up.

richard-nixon-not-crook

Stop Hatin'. Finally, President Obama said what he truly thought of the post-Tea Party idiocy, with just the proper soupçon of sarcastic … was pretty damned proud we elected this guy, twice.

Time for the Tea Party to pack up and ride on home.

Scarborough Punts but @GottaLaff Cantored In Before The NYT!

NO!

I can only fantasize about how many other liberal Morning Joe addicts wanted to reach into the belly of the tee vee and stick Schmoe Starbucks with a hat pin. (And wing Mika with the kind of Dorothy Parker elbow you'd normally reserve for Peggy Noonan. I can only assume she's got Stoly in her sippy cup or mainlined some Xanax this morning.)

Nothing to see here … move along … "Let's not overreact", Stay Calm and Deny that your GOP is going down the proverbial drain.

Don't oversimplify?? All you DO is over-simplify, target, generalize, demean, and defend your flaming idiocy, Schmoe. Gaah.

For gawd's sake this show is pre-scripted beyond House of Cards. That's why Mika's been trying to seduce the camera guy for the past six years. Or be coy to distract us from Partner Asshat.

The un-average Joe had the hubris to take Tweeters on in real time, the Cheetoh-eating sea of #UniteBlue 'fanatical fringe' he enraged under a month ago, then followed up with the meltdown that David Garber hilariously framed for us.

So the sportscasters are asleep at the wheel and the biggest political play in decades shook the rest of the news world last night around 8:05 p.m. Vermont time …

Which I know, because our own Laffy broke the Cantor Earthquake Breaking News before the Gray Lady, friends and fans!

Which to be frank, was an exhilarating experience to have been virtually no part of. I cheered her on as a gal pal and was part of her Twitter base. Beaming.

I was literally off eating a delicious hard-boiled egg sandwich the saintly husband had made me when I caught a breaking news banner that had to come from a hacker at Onion. "ERIC CANTOR LOSES >>>>>>PRIMARY>>>" … but the marvey Chris Hayes is mid-segment with the rest of the planet and MSNBC actually waits to have a source before they stamp a report.

Lunging for the iPhone in disbelief, I'm irrationally afraid @GottaLaff might be out buying Mr. Laffy some shoe laces and we need to get this story raced through the digital dashboard in five minutes or less. I got skills, thanks to the Lucian of my home base, BorderOrder, but they're rusty.

But deep down I KNEW she had it. Sure enough, back at the laptop I tab over to the Carnival and sister had an early breaker - no time to email back, she was publishing. And damn if she wasn't confirming right along with Maddow.

This is why we blog people, for moments like these when we all come together as a powerful flock.

Kudos Lady Laffy. You started the day with an epic Nicole Sandler Radio or Not segment on the gun-fondlers and announced the Oregon shooting story here and there virtually simultaneously. Then during an already Cohen Brothers movie of a news day, your fleet fingers beat the old Gray Lady.

@GottaLaff can canter. [Can you kick that idiot Scarborough in the ass from Cali?! I won't make you watch him Live. Promise. ]

Update: Chuck Todd saved the day regarding the Cantor media fun at the top of the hour at nine, then had Dave Brat himself on for an Exclusive. THAT was good.
