Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Wednesday was sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges that included trying to sell Barack Obama’s open Senate seat. Prosecutors had asked U.S. District Judge James Zagel to put Blagojevich behind bars for 15 to 20 years following his conviction on 18 felony counts.

A jury in Chicago on Monday convicted the former governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, of nearly all the corruption charges against him, including trying to sell or trade the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama.
Jurors delivered their verdicts Monday after deliberating nine days.
Mr. Blagojevich had faced 20 charges, including the Senate seat accusation and that he schemed to shake down executives for campaign donations.
He testified for seven days, denying wrongdoing. Prosecutors said he lied and the proof was on F.B.I. wiretaps.

He was found guilty on 17 of 20 counts.

The first question from a prosecutor in Blago’s corruption trial: “You are a convicted liar, correct?”
Blago’s response: “Yes.“
Last year he was convicted of one charge of lying to federal agents. Imagine if he’d testified at that trial.
This from the wannabe fake Navy SEAL Team Sixer who yearned to be a U.S. senator so he could go to Afghanistan and hunt down Osama Bin Laden.
Good grief, could there be a less credible witness?

If he had appointed himself to the U.S. Senate seat in 2008, he would have traveled to Afghanistan to try to hunt down one Osama bin Laden.

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) may see a possible political comeback in his future but a new Public Policy Polling survey finds him the least popular politician they’ve every surveyed. Just 8% of Illinois voters have a favorable opinion of him while 83% view him negatively.
Per MSNBC: Blago is GUILTY of lying to the FBI. One verdict only. 23 other counts… no unanimous verdict.
The one count carries maximum of 5 years in prison and a $250K fine.
This is a major defeat for US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald who prosecuted the Scooter Libby case.
UPDATE: Judge is declaring a mistrial on all other counts. Prosecution intends to retry the case.
