Overnight: Journey to the Crimea, Ukraine

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

CrimeaIf you type 'Crimea' into YouTube these days, you will mostly see videos of civil unrest because the Soviet Union Russia may invade the Ukraine, of which Crimea is a part, any day now (or not - let's hope not!).

I realized when I looked at the map that I had no idea what the actual countryside looks like. It is known mostly for its beaches and naval bases - it's on the Black Sea - so I looked for a non-military video and found the one embedded below.

A few things to know about it: it was shot with a GoPro HERO3 Black Edition (a very nifty little camera with excellent video quality and much of it from a tiny, remote-controlled helicopter called a Quadrocopter. The screen shot above of the couple driving down the rural road was taken from the helicopter flying alongside.

Enjoy! (oh...the accompanying music is, to my ears at least, horrible. I'd advise turning it offf!!!.)

Overnight: Spreewald Canals near Berlin, Germany

Spreewald Canal south of Berlin, Germany

Spreewald Canal south of Berlin, Germany

I have always wanted to visit the Spreewald - the forest which surrounds the Spree River, south of Berlin.  I've always been fascinated by canals and rivers of all sorts and one of the high points of my time in camp years ago was a weeklong trip into the Maine wilderness.

The Spreewald is my no means wilderness and was occupied over 1000 years ago but it has remained mostly undeveloped (though it's now a tourist destination).  When I studied in Berlin, it was 'behind the Iron Curtain', as strange as that phrase sounds years after the Berlin wall fell and East and West Germany were reunified.  If you'd like to read more about it, here's the Wiki.  If you'd like to just enjoy a leisurely trip through the canals, here's a video which will let you do just that:
