“There is a war on Christianity,” Paul told an audience of mostly evangelical Christians and Jews during a luncheon at the annual Faith and Freedom Conference in Washington. “Not just from liberal elites here at home, but worldwide. And your government, or more correctly, you, the taxpayer, are funding it. You are being taxed to send money to countries that are not only intolerant of Christians, but openly hostile. Christians are imprisoned and threatened with death for their beliefs.”

Rand Paul at the Faith and Freedom Coalition 6/13/13

To be followed by a much better quote-

“Yes, the long war on Christianity. I pray that one day we may live in an America where Christians can worship freely! In broad daylight! Openly wearing the symbols of their religion… perhaps around their necks? And maybe — dare I dream it? — maybe one day there can be an openly Christian President. Or, perhaps, 43 of them. Consecutively.”

E.W. Jackson

Let’s review who E.W. (aka EW!) Jackson is, exactly:

“Planned Parenthood has been far more lethal to black lives than the KKK.”

Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog:

The anti-gay activist said that gays and lesbians have “perverted” minds and are “very sick people psychologically, mentally and emotionally,” and bigoted against African Americans and Christians. [...]

Jackson added that homosexuality “poisons culture, it destroys families, it destroys societies” and will lead to God’s judgment. [...]

Jackson has accused President Obama of having “Muslim sensibilities” and seeing the world “from a Muslim perspective.” [...]

Zoe Schlanger reports that Virginia’s newly-nominated A.G. candidate advocated requiring women to report miscarriages to the police — or face jail time.

He’s also gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli’s running mate, the team that two Virginia GOP women said is “the worst ticket EVER!”

This is the same EW! who RNC Chair Reince Priebus thinks is a “dynamic guy” and “articulate.”

Now we discover that renowned articulate, dynamic genius E.W. has failed to correct an embarrassing boo-boo. His 2008 book Ten Commandments to an Extraordinary Life: Making Your Dreams Come True has a typo on its front cover. It should take you no longer than 3 seconds to spot it, if that:

EW Jackson misspelled book cover

He may think the president has “Muslim sensibilities, but apparently, he has illiterate sensibilities.

Via HuffPo:

Jackson’s book has received its share of criticism this month. Earlier in June, heads turned from passages suggesting yoga could possibly lead to satanic possession. Another segment raised the idea that theories of evolution were false because chimpanzees couldn’t speak.

Way to pick ‘em, GOP!

Yep, that (fake) Republican reinvention effort sure has taken hold. You know how you can tell? Easy peasy! Just take a look at what RNC chair Reince Priebus is saying about this guy:

“Planned Parenthood has been far more lethal to black lives than the KKK.”

And via Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog:

The anti-gay activist said that gays and lesbians have “perverted” minds and are “very sick people psychologically, mentally and emotionally,” and bigoted against African Americans and Christians. [...]

Jackson added that homosexuality “poisons culture, it destroys families, it destroys societies” and will lead to God’s judgment. [...]

E.W. Jackson, ladies and gentlemen. Or as I like to call him, Ew!

Priebus on D.C. radio station WMAL, via LiveWire:

I think that he’s a pretty dynamic guy. But ultimately this is about Ken Cuccinelli and Terry McAuliffe,” Preibus said of Jackson. “I think we know that, you know it’s never, just like in the Presidential election. It’s usually never about the VP, it’s always about the presidential candidate, it’s all about the governor. … That’s what’s going to matter, in the end, but, obviously, I think it’s good to have an articulate lieutenant governor that can work hard underneath, and move votes, and help out the top of the ticket.”

Yes, that’s what Reince thinks of the same guy who two Virginia GOP women said is part of “the worst ticket EVER!”

He admires “articulate” and “dynamic” E.W., who is on the same team as wannabe “it’s all about the governor” Cuccinelli, the top o’ the ticket:

Sorry, GOP, but you cannot reinvent your way out of these three.

ACA money will save lives, improve health, promote wellness, said anti-Obamacare GOP hypocrites who solicited grants

A pal and terrific investigative journalist Lee Fang has new story out in the Nation today about Republican double speak on President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Through a Freedom of Information Act request, he reports on over twenty GOP lawmakers requesting health reform money for their constituents, arguing that the money will save lives, improve health, and promote wellness — the very opposite of the arguments these lawmakers make when calling for repeal.

The story mentions NRSC chair Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) breaking ground at an opening ceremony for an Obamacare-funded health clinic, and Congressman Bill Cassidy (R-LA) cutting the ribbon at a health reform-funded health center in his district:

NRSC chair Sen. Jerry Moran Obamacare health care gop hypocrites

Congressman Bill Cassidy GOP hypocrites Obamacare

Lee:

Even before President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, Republicans were vowing to repeal it. It’s no wonder, because polls showed that the basic elements of the ACA were quite popular, and there was a real danger that it would become more so as people found out that the plan denounced as a “monstrosity” by the National Republican Senatorial Committee would not trample on their liberties so much as help protect their health. Desperate to avoid this, the GOP-controlled House has voted no fewer than thirty-seven times to repeal Obamacare in the three years since it was enacted.

Now letters produced by a Freedom of Information Act request reveal that many of these same anti-Obamacare Republicans have solicited grants from the very program they claim to despise. This is evidence not merely of shameless hypocrisy but of the fact that the ACA bestows tangible benefits that even Congress’s most extreme right-wing ideologues are hard-pressed to deny to their constituents.

Please proceed, Republicans.

Sometimes I get so frustrated and/or disheartened and/or annoyed by some of the news stories of the day that I can’t bring myself to write about them. Here are a few recent reports that made my blood pressure hit the roof. I am avoiding delving into them at length out of concern for my physical and mental health.

  • Killing Obamacare by Making it Fail– When failed attempts at repeal just won’t cut it: Now the GOP is trying to prevent the insurance exchanges from working. USA! USA! See how they care about the health and welfare of all Americans?

See what I mean? So who’s up for a couple of Margs or a trough of wine?

Lincoln Chafee is switching to Dem. Why? Something about worsening GOP obstruction, hostility to working with Obama

Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee is switching from “independent” and will join the Democratic party. He used to be a Republican.

His spokesman, Christian Vareika, said he thought about it long and hard and felt he shared “principles and priorities and values” with the Dems, on minor little things like “affordable public education, investing in infrastructure, equal rights, marriage equality.”

Via Greg Sargent, Vareika went on to say this:

“If you look at what the party has focused on in recent years, it’s increasingly been social issues that excite the base but aren’t what matters to working Americans,” Vareika said. “The governor has seen the Republican Party has become much more hostile to reaching across the aisle and compromising and finding a middle ground. The governor has the feeling that at every juncture, Republicans in Congress have worked actively to thwart the president’s agenda, not for substantive policy reasons, but for political ones.”

I just realized he is following me on the Twitter Machine and sent my congratulations. He is clearly a very, very wise man… not for following me (although that does point to his fine taste and superb sense of humor, wink wink), but because of his astute observations about the GOP. Although his spokesman did understate it a little.

Okay, a lot.

How’s that rebranding thing workin’ for ya, GOP?
