"It's Arm the Rebels o'clock. Do you know where your Senator John McCain is?"

john mccain arm rebels

How many times have we been subjected to John McCain's myopic rants about arming the rebels in any given civil war or in any given area of conflict?

Rachel Maddow:

It's Arm the Rebels o'clock. Do you know where your Senator John McCain is?

Per McCain, it really doesn't matter much where or who they are, if they're rebels, just arm them. Especially if President Obama is taking a more measured approach. Grampy McDrumbeat is just itching to hand over lethal weapons of war to someone, anyone, because if fits into his whole Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb [insert country here] mentality: the more explosions the better. Especially if we aid and abet some of them. Blow 'em up! Kill [insert bad guys' name here]! What a blast! (Pun intended.)

weeee smaller

There's just one problem with that mania, Senator McDrumbeat. It can backfire.

Take Guatemala, for example. Via the Los Angeles Times:

Perez Molina said the violence and crime in Guatemala were a byproduct of the Cold War when the U.S. and the Soviet Union were funding opposite sides of civil wars in Central America to gain influence.

Perez Molina was a top intelligence officer in the Guatemalan military in the 1980s and ’90s.

Moral of the story: Don't listen to John McCain.

Real moral of the story: A more rational, measured approach is most often very wise and can save lives.

Other moral of the story: The road to more violence and crime is paved with shortsighted intentions.

Immoral of the story: Stop treating horribly abused child refugees like criminals.

In related news, there was an L.A. Times letter to the editor that is worth a share. I'd link to it, but I can't find it on the Times site, so I'm transcribing it verbatim:

Re: "Texas to send Guard troops to border," July 22

I hear echoes of Kent State University. What are the National Guard troops to do to these migrant children in Texas: shoot them?

Pat Mauer, Pasadena

What is it with Republican presidential hopefuls and violent troubleshooting? (Pun intended.)

What God?

Dead child in parents arms

What God do these Nigerian rebels believe in? Could it be they really don't  have souls at all?  How despicable and contemptuous can a group be?  Here's a few excerpts from a report by ADAMU ADAMU and MICHELLE FAUL. You'll have to have quite a strong fortitude to read this and not become enraged.

Islamic militants attacked a boarding school before dawn Saturday, dousing a dormitory in fuel and lighting it ablaze as students slept, survivors said. At least 30 people were killed in the deadliest attack yet on schools in Nigeria's embattled northeast.

"We were sleeping when we heard gunshots. When I woke up, someone was pointing a gun at me," Musa Hassan, 15, told The Associated Press of the assault on Government Secondary School in Mamudo village in Yobe state.  He put his arm up in defense, and suffered a gunshot that blew off all four fingers on his right hand, the one he uses to write.

"They burned the children alive," he said, the horror showing in his wide eyes.

Burned the children alive. Think about that. In who's justice are these killers right?

...parents screamed in anguish as they attempted to identify the victims, many charred beyond recognition. Some parents do not know if their children survived or died.

Farmer Malam Abdullahi found the bodies of two of his sons, a 10-year-old shot in the back as he apparently tried to run away, and a 12-year-old shot in the chest.

A day later, June 17, extremists fired on students sitting at their desks as they were writing exams in Maiduguri, killing at least nine pupils.

What this tells me is that these rebels and bullies fear education.  They hope to control the locals by these actions.

The same philosophy, though so far peacefully here, is being practiced.  The Republicans are using it to ruin this country.  By cutting back education, doubling costs on student loans, closing libraries, trimming public school funding, closing down planned parenthood, de-funding after-school programs, cuting food assistance to poor children, they are carrying on their attack, their tyranny.  With education comes light and with enough illumination, everyone will see the GOP's selfish motives. They are killers in their own way.

These Nigerian rebels, the so-called Islamic Militants, don't have Islam in their heart. They don't even have a heart or they couln't do what they're doing.  In it's place is hate and fear.  Sadly, if only they had been educated, they'd never have taken part in mowing down or burning alive innocent children.

My heart goes out to these bereaved families. I hope they can stay strong. Their pain is felt here.

It's going to serve as a wake up call to motivate America not to fall prey to ignorant bullies -- hear that, GOP? You're not getting away with keeping us from education. You can't stop women from their God-given rights to their bodies. And you can't keep us from healthy air, water and solutions to climate control.

Nigerians are dying needlessly --  and over education. We're heading there through despotic right wing attacks right now.  We allow random arming of the population by anyone who wants to carry a gun.  We hide behind the antiquated 2nd amendment claims. I don't dispute the right to have a gun, I dispute a lack of registrations. You need 'em for a car. You need 'em for a plane. You need 'em for a boat. Hell, you need them to vote.

Uncontrolled arming of the masses is one whack job away from mowing down women at planned parenthood or abortions clinics. It's a nutcase or two from keeping immigrants from living safe lives here in America. It's one more right-wing legislation from unwanted pregnancies and dead women in the streets who've resorted to un-regulated back-alley abortions because good women were kept from legal procedures by old, white, Republican, extremist zealots.  Nigeria won't fold. And neither will we.
