When you're running for any kind of office, it's always best to tell the truth, speak your mind and let people know where you stand. And when you're elected to office, it's helpful to know what you're doing and how you're serving us.
A new candidate for a Michigan seat on the Republican National Committee wants gays "purged" from the GOP and claims homosexuality is a "perversion" created by Satan himself. Mary Helen Sears of Houghton County in the state's Upper Peninsula, elected vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party's 1st District last year, posted a rant in April on the Schoolcraft County GOP website -- preceded by a warning asking readers to "please use your discretion before taking any decisions based on the information in this blog."
Gee, how considerate of Ms. Sears to offer such a warning. We wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong impression of how she feels in this or any other issue. Face issues head on, I'm sure she always says.
"How do you handle a hungry man? The Manhandlers." That's the old ad slogan for Campbell's Soup. But that was way back in the mid '70s. We're in the 2024 generation. What does the vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party have to say now?
In the post, Sears claimed that homosexuals prey on children, argued that "Satan uses homosexuality to attack the living space of the Holy Spirit" and advocated that Republicans "as a party should be purging this perversion and send them to a party with a much bigger tent."
Where are the looney bin keepers and white-suited men when you need them? Can you believe this woman is a GOP member? On top of that she's a gay basher? And an ignorant hater?
Sadly she's not alone. Take Dave Agema, a former Michigan state lawmaker who has regularly made anti-gay comments and has been condemned by fellow Republicans, including Gov. Rick Snyder. He's also serving on the Michigan Republican National Committee.
Here I thought it was just West Virginia that's suffering the ill effects of tainted water. Surely there much be some leakage of some kind of crazy juice or insane sauce up in Michigan.
Ms. Sears is up in arms over the seeming tolerance of gays in our society. And the same with communism. She's attacking the higher education leaders as well:
...wrote that Communist college professors were indoctrinating young people and claimed that Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory "gave rise to Hitler’s Third Reich, Mussolini’s Italy and Stalin’s Russia."
She's lumped communism into the ills and dangers following any of us who dare allow gays to roam freely, preying on our young along with college professors who are out to corrupt our older children's minds. Paranoid, much?
"If the GOP continues down this trend and stand for perversions and the daily social fad ... The GOP will be truly dead and Satan will have had his day," Sears wrote.
It's at times like this when you can't help wonder who left the door open to the insane asylum.
Well, it looks like there no such thing as a free lunch, or even a paid lunch if you visit this restaurant -- Gary's Chicaros in Enid, Oklahoma. Well, at least for some people. According to owner and manager, Gary James, don't bother looking for service at his joint if you're "freaks, faggots, disabled, or on welfare. That's some pretty blunt talk.
"I really don't want gays around," Gary's Chicaros Club owner Gary James told NBC affiliate KFOR-TV after a reporter asked him about several comments accusing the restaurant of discrimination. "Any man that would compromise his body would compromise anything."
"I've been in business 44 years. I think I can spot a freak or a f****t," James told the news station.
Any guess his political affiliation? The reason I bring it up is Gary isn't just a restaurateur. He was a candidate for city council in 2009. Though he narrowly lost, he's considering a run again -- from the Tea Party.
If you ever pass through Enid, be warned if you are wearing a hat. He doesn't like hats, especially worn indoors. He sure has a lot of rules. And amazingly, you'd think some, if not all, were discriminatory, if not just plain illegal. But hey, Gary's a law-abiding man. He wouldn't skirt the law.
It should be noted that refusing to serve a gay customer appears to be legal in Oklahoma. Although the state protects people from being turned away from businesses for their race, gender or religion, it does not offer that protection for sexual orientation.
So how does this sage ol' dining establishment owner know who to kick out? Does he have gaydar? He doesn't say.
But, apparently, it's not just homosexuality that James dislikes. The restaurant's signature T-shirt features an image of a target with a list of groups -- including Muslims, blacks and Democrats -- written on it, KFOR-TV notes.
And customers have definitely taken notice of the environment.
"I cannot rate this food since I cannot be served," one reviewer wrote on Yelp. "Visit Taco Bell instead. It's a crappy taco, but at least it doesn't come with hate sauce."
For those old enough to remember GET SMART, you'll remember the catchphrase, "I just missed it by this much."
I bet that's how MSNBC is feeling today. Earlier I posted a blog on the apology MSNBC made over an offensive tweet someone from the company put out last week stating that they thought the bi-racial Cheerios commercial would perhaps be unsettling to right wing viewers at the Super Bowl. It is called Reince Priebus, RNC Prince of Fools, Pulls Out Secret Card. In in, RNC Chairman Priebus was outraged and offended that the progressives at MSNBC would think that somehow the conservatives in the GOP would be offended by the ad showing that there are happy bi-racial families in this world.
Phil Griffin publicly apologized for that characterization of the GOP's right wing, even called the RNC chairman personally to apologize and also took the additional step by having the author of the tweet fired from MSNBC.
Apparently that wasn't good enough and the Amazing Mr. P. said he was putting MSNBC on notice. He'll be watching them -- (If only he would, maybe he'd learn something).
Well, a few days went by. Now it's Super Bowl Sunday. The Cheerios commercial airs and there's little to no hubbub or fallout over it this day after... Apparently MSNBC was wrong and perhaps they were wrong in making the perceived racist tweet: (via TPM)
“Maybe the rightwing (sic) will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new #Cheerios ad w/ biracial family,” the tweet read.
So the time of reckoning came and passed. And the reaction to the Cheerios commercial was muted at worst. But...
It seems MSNBC got the commercial wrong (Cheerios), but they got the comment right. Turns out it would be a Coca Cola commercial sung in English, Arabic and Spanish that would bring out the right wing wackadoos. In this ad, the song, America the Beautiful is sung in three languages. And the fact that it's belted out in English, Arabic and Spanish seems to have offended the Tea Party dingo birds here on our shores. The cuckoos have taken flight and are outraged. They want to destroy us the way Angry birds do the pigs in the video game.
The sky is falling, according to the Right Wing zealots:
Again from TPM:
Former tea party congressman Allen West even took time to write a blog post during the game to voice his displeasure. For West, the ad started out strong enough.
"Then the words went from English to languages I didn’t recognize," a troubled West wrote, calling it "a truly disturbing commercial."
Okay, now hold on. Perhaps this former Florida congressman didn't recognize the Arabic language, but are you telling me he lives in Florida and doesn't recognize Spanish? What mudhole has he been submerging his head in to avoid the real world?
Michael Patrick Leahy over at Breitbart was offended, too.
Not only did Coke use "a deeply Christian patriotic anthem whose theme is unity – in several foreign languages," but Leahy noted that the "ad also prominently features a gay couple."
Oh, my goodness. Since when did America The Beautiful become a Christian song? And what a shudder it must be to include a gay couple as part of the American fabric. Heavens.
America The Beautiful is considered an American patriotic song, but it has no ethnic or religious priority. The lyrics were originally a poem written by Katherine Lee Bates, entitled Pikes Peak. The music was composed by Samuel A. Ward from his song O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882. Jerusalem? How's that for patriotic America. Jerusalem sounds more Arabic in locale than American.
We are America and we are a melting pot of so many nationalities. Singing this song (which is not a national anthem, just a song) is a tribute to our faith, love and belief in this country. You don't have to be born here to believe in what it stands for. Unity isn't just straight, white, Anglo-Saxon. Sorry all you homophobic, anti-immigrant, right wingnuts -- you're just plain wrong.
So, in rebuke to the critics like Reince Priebus who felt so outraged that their constituents would be offended by a racially questionable statement regarding Cheerios, here's the Coca Cola commercial in full -- let's see now who apologizes for their racially and sexually insensitive comments that this commercial is either un-American or un-patriotic.
C'mon Mr. RNC Chairman. Stand up for your bigot membership now. Let's see who goes on "double secret probation."
