How does this happen? Is AZ really that f’d up?
Democrat Paul Penzone conceded the Maricopa County sheriff’s race to Sheriff Joe Arpaio shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, but his concession came with a message for the longtime Republican incumbent: the community is watching.
“Our sheriff needs to be transparent, he needs to treat everyone with dignity and respect,” Penzone said to a room full of supporters. “People in this community are going to be watching. They’re going to be holding him accountable.”
Arpaio was hopeful he would be re-elected as he watched early returns at a party in downtown Phoenix on Tuesday night, surrounded by longtime supporters.
“Cautiously optimistic,” Arpaio said of the outcome. “We’re having a good time.”
