Doonesbury, Melissa Harris-Perry skewer GW Bush: Library Decision Points “Option 2- Continue reading the goat book.”

Garry Trudeau continues his wickedly satirical story arc about the George W. Bush “lie-bury.” Previously, he skewered W and his House O’ Coloring Books and Propaganda in these posts: Doonesbury, Rachel Maddow and the Bush Lie-Bury: “You’re a top decisioner!” “Way to go, wusses!” and Doonesbury– Bush Lie-Bury “Decision Points” Option 2: “Fly over flooded city and look out window with concern.”

Melissa Harris-Perry didn’t hold back either, both in this terrific Maddow Show video, and now in a segment from her own show:

Melissa nailed it:

Dear President George W. Bush,

It’s me, Melissa.

Congratulations on the opening of your library. Now maybe you’ll go inside one. [...]

[A]s a resident of post-Katrina New Orleans, the one decision point that really has me fired up is how your library represents the choices you faced in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. [...]

Looting was the big problem?

As much as 80% of the city was flooded. Nearly a thousand Louisiana residents died, many in their own homes, drowned by storm surges that breached inadequate federal levees. Many thousands more were trapped in the Superdome and Convention Center for days without food, medicine, water, electricity, or working bathrooms.

And you were trying to figure out whether or not to quell an insurrection? These people were Americans, Mr. President. [...]

I am glad that you are slowing down, catching your breath and finding a way to live life to the fullest. In the meantime, tens of thousands of New Orleanians are still trying to find a way home, still displaced by the policies of your administration, still reeling from the failures of your decisions.

But hey, “Heckuva job, Dubya.”

Sincerely,

Melissa

VIDEO– Melissa Harris-Perry: “While Congress continues to make it impossible to close Gitmo, human lives are hanging in the balance.”

gitmo mhp showI cannot thank Melissa Harris-Perry enough for including this segment on her show. Regular readers know I’ve been covering Guantanamo Bay detainee/torture/indefinite detention stories for years, focusing primarily on one innocent, non-terrorist detainee, Fayiz Al-Kandari, and his attorney, Lt. Col. Barry Wingard.

Please, please read and share this post: No charges, no trials: “After 11 1/2 years, these men live in animal cages… essentially dead men who just happen to breathe.”

Now please watch this report:

Melissa Harris-Perry:

“…Make no mistake, political prisoners are not a thing of the past. Currently 166 prisoners remain detained at Gitmo, the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo, Cuba. In February, detainees began a hunger strike, protesting searches and seemingly unending detention. The official number of hunger strikers stands at 37 with 11 of them being force-fed through tubes. while the Pentagon  remains mute about the situation, the White House had this to say on Wednesday…”

Joshua Earnest, White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary:

“I can tell you that the White House and the president’s team is closely monitoring the hunger strikers at Guantanamo Bay. For details about what is actually happening there I would refer you to the Department of Defense. But I can tell you that the administration remains committed to closing the facility at Guantanamo Bay. Progress has been made under this and the previous administration, but given the legislation that Congress has put in place, it’s clear that it’s going to take some time to fully close the facility.”

MHP:

“So while Congress continues to make it impossible to close Gitmo, human lives are hanging in the balance.”

here; That link includes one specific to only *Fayiz al-Kandari’s story here.

Here are audio and video interviews with Lt. Col. Wingard, one by David Shuster, one by Ana Marie Cox, and more. My guest commentary at BuzzFlash is here.

Lt. Col. Barry Wingard is a military attorney who represents Fayiz Al-Kandari in the Military Commission process and in no way represents the opinions of his home state. When not on active duty, Colonel Wingard is a public defender in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

If you’d like to see ways you can take action, go here and scroll down to the end of the article.

Then read Jane Mayer’s book The Dark Side. You’ll have a much greater understanding of why I post endlessly about this, and why I’m all over the CIA deception issues, too.

VIDEO: “A needed response to the Steubenville rapists… or any rapists out there.”

girl passed out PSA rape

Today while I was on with Nicole Sandler doing my weekly radio spot, she ended the show with this must-see PSA aimed at teenage boys on what to do with a girl who’s passed out on your couch.

I had never seen it, and immediately teared up. What a simple and perfect message about respect and compassion:

Samantha Stendal:

To the Steubenville rapists…or any rapists out there.

Madd Lawgick:

This society has far more misandric beliefs then it does misogynist beliefs at this point. The man hating is at a ridiculous level in every aspect from elementary school to Prison sentences.

“real” Feminist always claim to be fighting for the rights of both genders but you NEVER see this in action. In actions all you see is feminist trying to gain more and more PRIVILEGES(not rights) for women and ignoring an issues dealing with men.

The radfems are heading the Feminists movement now.

Yeah, we “radfems” hate men so much that we try to prevent and cope with the devastation of rape.

Melissa Harris-Perry must be trying so hard to “gain more PRIVILEGES” that she showed all kinds of compassion to rape survivors, having been one herself. She’s clearly “ignoring all those issues dealing with men,” those poor men who brutally abuse women, when she said to the Steubenville survivor, you “are not alone. We have failed you. I believe in you.”

What a radfem.

VIDEO: Someone finally explains “Obamacare” state exchanges

obamacare haven't been taken over by Soviets

Melissa Harris-Perry was on a roll today. First she opened her heart to the 16-year-old Steubenville rape survivor: You “are not alone. We have failed you. I believe in you.”

Here are another couple of segments, this time on the Affordable Care Act. By the way, Huffington Post reminds us that the Senate has voted 36 times to repeal the health care law.

Jay Angoff, former Health and Human Services Dep’t. official:

Exchanges are websites. They’re places to buy insurance. And today, for most people, the place will be the Internet. So regardless of what state you live in, if you don’t get insurance at work, you’ll be able to go on the Internet, punch in the answers to four questions which are: Age, location which will be zip code, family size, and whether you smoke or not. And based on those four questions, you will get quotes from every insurance company selling insurance through the exchange. That’s a terrific thing.

And so people won’t be turned down because of health status. they won’t be able to be charged more based on health status… this will facilitate competition, allow people to make apples to apples comparisons. They’ll see which company is selling the best product for the lowest price. That should drive down prices.

Insurance companies have to sell through the exchanges. They can’t afford not to. This is a huge new market of an estimated 16 million people. Insurance companies have to sell to these people. In addition, they’re losing people now. So they have to sell to the exchanges.

Here is the segment on Medicaid:

Angoff:

It’s not just poor people who want this. And this is why I think even people like Governor Perry ultimately will accept the Medicaid expansion. The hospitals want it. The hospitals need to get paid. And even the Chambers of Commerce who are not generally thought of as advocates for the poor, the Chambers of Commerce want it because it’s good for business. So because it’s good for hospitals, because hospitals need to get paid, because the Chambers of Commerce want it, I think even  governors like Rick Perry in Texas will accept Medicaid.

This is a must-see video.

I choked up right along with Melissa Harris-Perry (@MHarrisPerry) as she poured her heart out to the 16-year-old Steubenville rape victim who has been ridiculed and bullied after having suffered a devastating trauma that will affect her the rest of her life. This was as excruciating to watch as it was cathartic, as it was uplifting.

Melissa was speaking from experience, she was heartfelt and painfully empathetic, caring, loving, eloquent… and classy:

“I’m sorry. We have failed to teach your male peers that they heave no right to touch you without your consent. Or to use you to meet their needs. Or to discard you if your victimization does not fit their life plan.”

“I am sorry we have failed you.”

“…54% of survivors never report the assault. It’s the reason I kept my secret for nearly a decade. But not you, beloved.”

“You demanded the right to be heard.”

“You knew just how relentlessly they would try to silence you, and you knew that neighbors and friends and even members of the national media would mourn the loss of your attackers’ football careers more than the loss of your innocence.”

But you spoke out anyway… You spoke for my 14-year-old-self…”

This is me saying, ‘I BELIEVE YOU.”

” I don’t need to know your name, but I need you to know you’re not alone.”

“You will continue surviving, and if you ever get down, if you ever wonder how you’re gonna go on, take out this letter, because I BELIEVE YOU.

VIDEO: Still into Chris Christie, Dems? Not so fast.

chris christie enough about me

In my previous post Dems, what are you thinking? Chris Christie? Really??, I asked why Democrats are so blinded by one or two decent moves (motivated by, among other things, ambition) by a nasty conservative, egocentric blowhard that they’d start referring to themselves as “fans” of his.

In another post, one that I strongly suggest you read, Think for yourself. Ask questions. Do your homework, I Link and Link to his disdainful attitude and his not-Democratic political views. This should not be necessary, but apparently, it is.

Let’s not, as a party, contribute to very-Republican Christie’s future success, okay, Dems? Can we at least stop fawning over someone who cares very little about us and very much about himself and his very-Republican career?

To Mr. 73% Approval/62% Dem Approval, from Melissa Harris-Perry:

Let’s hope you do a better job presiding over your state’s storm recovery than you’ve done presiding over New Jersey’s economic recovery… 47th in the nation in 2011. And right now the unemployment rate is 9.6%, surpassing the national rate by almost 2%.”

And so much for your reputation for telling the hard truth or telling the truth at all.”

You even went so far as to veto not once, not twice, but three times a tax increase on millionaires.”

Thanks to you, the women of New Jersey now have six fewer family planning clinics.”

“That’s fewer breast cancer exams, fewer cancer screenings, fewer lives that could be saved with preventive care. So yes, by all means, enjoy your moment, you’ve earned it! But thanks to your policy record, you’ve also earned what’s coming to you in 2016, and I have a feeling America’s voters are gonna give you exactly what you deserve.”

On The Melissa Harris-Perry Show, Melissa and her guest Michael Eric Dyson made some excellent points.

Dyson:

“We’re ‘surprised’ it happened here… which means by implication, it’s supposed to happen there… That’s the tragedy here.”

“There’s a lack of cultural empathy… You know, ‘he was a troubled child.’ Ain’t no ‘troubled children’ named Jamal or Chaniqua, it seems to be. So we don’t have that kind of empathy to understand what they’re dealing with.”
