Fact Checking The Talking Heads? Why Fox News Is Nervous

Time marches on. First we had Fox News. No checking of statements or facts. Just say whatever works for the Right wing and it will be accepted as gospel.

Then comes along PolitiFact. It's a fact checking group who's mission is to take apart widely circulated stories and do some fact checking on them. The stories are rated on their veracity. That started to keep some of the more outrageous claims to a limit -- or at least allowed for a tamping down of the total fabrications. But even the results of the PolitiFact findings were often called into question -- just ask Rachel Maddow.

Now, born November 1st, just a few days ago is PunditFact, a site dedicated to checking claims by pundits, columnists, bloggers and the hosts and guests of talk shows.

According to the source itself,

PunditFact is a partnership of PolitiFact and the Poynter Institute, the journalism school that owns the Tampa Bay Times.

The new site will have a dedicated staff of journalists who will research claims by media figures and rate them using PolitiFact’s Truth-O-Meter. The fact-checks will be published on and will often be featured on the main PolitiFact site.

This could be interesting.

Soon those nattering nabobs of negativism, the jabbering ninnies of the networks will be encouraged to do more than just read the stories handed to them. They might have to actually start listening the the balderdash that comes out of their echo chambers. These pundits will be held to veracity levels that heretofore escaped them -- just like the hot air most expel with each eye-rolled sigh and statement they made courtesy of their teleprompters.

Will it matter? Will it change anything? Probably not, but it will be fodder for more criticism and conjecture.

How truthful is O'Reilly? Chris Wallace? Joe Scarborough and Sean Hannity? Well, if PolitiFact is any guideline as to the accuracy of facts and verisimilitude of PunditFact itself, Rachel Maddow will most likely nail it as she had done in the past. They ought to be sued for their own lack of fact checking.

While it remains to be seen who the most trusted name in news will be, the act of rating talking heads promises to be a fun one. Now if we can just hook up these people to get a large, non-lethal jolt of electricity every time they lie, we'd have a lot more fun with this. If we turn up the juice, we might even have ourselves a Hunger Games of News -- and around election time, won't that be fun?

Who Do You Trust?

The boy who cried wolf

You know the story of the boy who cried wolf. He lied so many times that when the wolf finally showed up, nobody believed his pleas for help and he got eaten.

Well, now we're being asked to believe the FBI. The same FBI who told a number of lies on a particular case and now they expect us to believe them. So, this time they're telling the truth. Hmm.

Here's the tragic story and it goes back to a post I made on August 4, 2013. It was called "Can You Trust The FBI?" The gist of that story was that Ibraham Todashev, supposedly a friend of one of the Boston Marathon bombers, was justifiably killed while undergoing questioning. The FBI gave six different accounts of their slaying the unarmed, cooperating witness. Watch this to refresh your memory:

Now, it seems, these same FBI are claiming categorically, unequivocally and without a doubt that Boston Bomber Tsarnaev was behind the bloody, brutal triple murders in Massachusetts. According to MailOnline:

Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev did participate in a brutal triple murder 16 months before the deadly  marathon attack according to court records filed on Tuesday.

This conclusion is based on the same FBI agents who concocted six different reports on the murder of the "friendly witness," Todashev. (I know, these foreign names are hard to keep straight, but you'll figure it out)

Considering they couldn't get their story straight right after the event, why should we believe them now? Didn't we learn anything from Aesop's fable?

'According to Tsarnaev's friend Ibragim Todashev, Tamerlan Tsarnaev participated in the Waltham triple homicide,' prosecutors wrote in a motion filed on Monday according to MyFox Boston.

This bothers me. Certainly someone capable of plotting, planning and carrying out the horrific Boston Marathon bombings could have killed three people over a drug deal gone bad. It's not a huge stretch. And if Tsarnaev did do this, he should be tagged with that crime. The victim's families should know the truth. They should be allowed their grief with the knowledge that the loss of their loved one is solved.

But is this the real truth, or simply a convenient truth?

triple murder in Waltham

Waltham Mass. police were stumped and unable to solve this triple murder for a year and a half after it happened. Now it's so easily solved through another crime? One in which the connection and unarmed witness has been shot and killed by the G-men?

I know investigating one crime often turns up evidence of other misdeeds. Maybe it did this time too. But maybe the crime it shed light on wasn't in Waltham Mass. Maybe it was a different murder-- one committed by lying, prevaricating, can't-get-our-stories-straight, over-zealous, Feds.

When is the FBI going to investigate and reveal the findings of the Ibragim Todashev death? When that comes out and if it stands the "sniff" test, then I'll believe they have the right guy in the Waltham triple murders. Until then, this is just another story from the boy who cried wolf.

This Is Just Too Rich To Pass Up

When it comes to phonies and hypocrites, here's the height of audacity. From HuffPo:

Rep. Randy Neugebauer's (R-Tex.) Wednesday confrontation of a poor park ranger on the scene -- who was doing nothing more than her job -- blaming her for the closure he voted for and telling her that she should be ashamed of herself.

It's great to see a bystander stick up for her. He represents the feelings a majority of us have. Watching this, you won't be able to hold back shouting, "Congress, do your job!"
