Senator Gillibrand Rips the Curtain Back on Sexism and Political Jane Crow

Share

WTF_w364h202

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has released a book revealing some of The Old Boys Club peccadillos, and they are legion. Near-legendary, as sexism goes.

"Please don't lose too much weight now, I like my girls chubby,' was supposed to be a Senate collee compliment … and the kicker was, he had his hand on the Lady Senator's stomach while he gave her the 'compliment', then proceeded to clearly want to take her measurements.

The Washington Post minced no words to publicly reprimand the behavior, or cycle of behavior as I like to think of it because this is a situation that needs to be temporary, reformed and shaken down for corruption as well as a conscience and a few residual morals.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) has a new book coming out, "Off the Sidelines," and has been making the media rounds to promote it. The New York Post highlighted parts of the book today, in an article titled, "Gillibrand: Male colleagues called me ‘porky’ after baby."

johnO

As awful as that headline is, things get worse in the book, according to the story. One quote in particular stands out. Gillibrand reveals that one male Senator, after she lost about 50 pounds, came up behind her and gave her waist a squeeze. “Don’t lose too much weight now," he told her. "I like my girls chubby.” She says that he was one of her favorite senators(!).

As Gillibrand's title infers, the book goes into detail about the things that women in politics still have to deal with that their male counterparts, well, don't.

It's high freaking time this book was written, and may it encourage other professional and non-professional truths to sort through about just where the proverbial buck stops on this issue.

IQ

Some told of senators ogling women on the Senate floor or watching porn on iPads and on state-owned computers, of legislators hitting on female staffers or using them to help them meet women, and of hundreds of little comments in public and private that women had to brush off to go about their day. Some said they often felt marginalized and not listened to—that the sexism in the Legislature made their jobs harder and, at times, produced public policy hostile to women.

Yet, despite their strong feelings, women in the Capitol rarely talk about, except in the most private discussions, the misogyny they see all the time. It’s just the way the Legislature has always been.

Gillibrand surely isn't alone in having to deal with such comments with her male colleagues at the Capitol, although some of her encounters are jaw-droppingly bad/offensive. When she was still in the House, a Southern representative told her, “You know, Kirsten, you’re even pretty when you’re fat."

IforgotIonlyexist

Morning Joe Schmoe and Morning Mika et al gave that a look-see -- let's hope the media does grab on with four hands to get this information out there, and that women and men sit up and see the regressive elephant hogging all the space and oxygen in the room.

This goes deeper than reflexive Hillary-type bashing, after the stats we have heard about sexual assault on both sexes in the military, and now have a sitting Senator's word for the attitude in the highest legislative body in the land.

Once again, humiliated a bit by fellow Americans.

The GOP: belly-aching, bloviatin', bitchin' an' a' hatin' = #NoTeaForYou

The Right does little but belly-ache and b i t c h about the current Administration and his Pinko Commie, Arugula Munching Lacker of Feck, related non-deserved and hatin' hatin' hatin' on him for being audacious enough to accept being a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Head Satan of Obamacare, Perpetrator o Impeachable Offenses and Unpresident-like.

And they have ruined tea for many a liberal, Independent (we still have those, right?) and common sense voter.

This is excruciatingly embarrassing, even for the Grand Old Party of Tea. Spite evolved to a powerful lotta' hate fer' the spurious, specious even for the Regressive Right and utter Bizarro World Orwellian (h/t to Lucian) … and the marked Dovish Lack of Cajones for passing on the whole GOP (newest)Gun Fondling craze.

stilladick

#NoTeaForYou … the Do Nothings have made Inactivity the norm, the status quo for as far the eye can see. The GOP was far more tolerant, thoughtful and intelligent in days of yore.

I'm a life-long tea drinker, great-grand-exponentially-mothered, and my corpus hasn't enjoyed the cafè in twenty years so it's even more of a a kick in the old scones. I've not bought Lipton since I started referring to the Tea People as the Lipton Brigadiers. (And that's perfectly fine for iced tea if you add to it or for the odd nut who wants de-caf-wtf. At dawn.

I fear our prime years as bloggers and those who read our scribblings and comment/expand the grass roots enthusiasm and numbers for us. In other words, The Teatonic Era, Doris Kerns Goodwin's granddaughters will analyze it from a woman's P.O.V. Hope she has a Bean clamming outfit and a hose-sprayered gallon or two of our Method™ Troll Spray.

thanks, obama

I'll just leave a short quote and some relevant idiot footage here, see you on the other side. Happy Monday Monday.

In an op-ed published Wednesday by the New York Times, columnist Charles M. Blow destroyed the recent assertion by Republican Congressman Mo Brooks that Democrats and President Obama are waging a war against white people. During an appearance on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham’s show on Monday, Brooks claimed that the Democratic Party is using a strategy to divide everyone by race and show that “whites hate everybody else.” After Ingraham had played a clip from Ron Fournier of the National Journal saying that the GOP has a real problem with Hispanics and that it is becoming the party of white people, Brooks made the following comments:

“This is a part of the war on whites that’s being launched by the Democratic Party. And the way in which they’re launching this war is by claiming that whites hate everybody else. It’s part of the strategy that Barack Obama implemented in 2008, continued in 2012, where he divides us all on race, on sex, greed, envy, class warfare, all those kinds of things.”

Balderdash. [Re Ingraham. How in holy hades did Olbermann stand dating her more than one time, and presumably, they had conversations? That was leaning forward a slosh too far.

For some audio footage that might best be heard by helping yourself to a sedative of your choice in the TPC walk-in med closet, here 'ya go. From Right Wing Watch via Politics USA.

Obama gets shite if he sends troops anywhere other than American bases, from both right and the deeply pacifist (yay for us) Dems and Independents. The artwork below I found spot on, though I feel Boehner is perhaps more of a fiddle fellow.

The Morning Schmoe Roundtable had their antlers up.

If you look closely you can just spot the tear of lament on Bo(eh)ner's patriotic to the max face.

Women Are Doing It for Ourselves, Voice a Pair of First Ladies

Tried-to-Vote

As much as Laura Bush is tied to a fervent anchor in her horrible choice of a Bush spouse, on occasion she pops out in public to remind us that she may have thrice the brains W possesses (or more).

This week she and current First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, came together for some great causes involving the modern plight of women. Here and abroad … but disgraceful in the purported leadership of the Free World. And they were, pitifully ironically at the U.S. and Africa Summit.

Women of both parties can sling shame exceptionally well, and it is desperately need right now. From first chorus to coda, it is a worthy cause to set to voice. Loudly voice.

Some footage about women's rights and voting by the good Reverend, Al Sharpton and guest Barbaar Arnwine, from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights.

From ProPublica via The Everlasting GopStoppers.com:

When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a key part of the Voting Rights Act last June, justices left it to Congress to decide how to fix the law. But while Congress deliberates, activists are turning again to the courts: At least 10 lawsuits have the potential to bring states and some local jurisdictions back under federal oversight - essentially doing an end-run around the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Voting-suppression-Block-the-vote

A quick refresher: The Voting Rights Act outlaws racial discrimination against voters. But the law’s real strength comes from its “preclearance” provision, which forces jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination to submit new voting measures to the federal government for approval.

MSNBC ran some fabulous footage on the matter this week, and a rare glimpse of Laura and FLOTUS Michelle - we don't see them together terribly often; and particularly having elucidating speech on a needful cause. Laura has a uterus and a somewhat-working knowledge of this country and Britain's suffragette triumphs. Have a gander and I'll see you on the other side.

Just last summer, SCOTUS nullified the section of the Voting Rights Act that allowed sensible federal oversight.

Bush-meme

And we all know how much the Regressive Right adores oversight, non? New restrictions on anything  Federal or oversight related generally gives the GOP and the Lipton Brigade a collective woody.

Not to mention living in the pre-Mad Men area, barefoot, preggers and disinclined to vote at all or hell bent on doing everything their GOP.Tea Idjot fool husbands tell them to.

It took American women decades of protest, blood, sweat, tears and rage to get the damned vote … we are not going to have it suppressed, threatened or refused to be part of a legitimate count.  Check out recent stats:

voter-id-stats1

In last summer’s Shelby County v. Holder ruling, the Supreme Court threw out the part of the law that spelled out when states were automatically subject to federal oversight. States that have been released from preclearance have already passed a rash of new restrictive voting measures.

The Founding Father's must already be lined up to scowl and possibly 'spit like they mean' it at Dubbayuh Bush. Along with herds of liberal alpacas. A pissed off alpaca can hawk a loogie as famously well as an annoyed camel, and they have no compunction whatsoever. Can speak with experience with both four-legged wonders of sarcasm.

Michele Bachmann Brays: TheGays increase child molestation #CuzTheBible

Republican Elephant
What the Bible tells this woman is not the best public relations for modern American Christianity.

In a follow-up to our Laffy's superb post warning us of Bachmann's inexplicable need to run for president and fail spectacularly at it again, Michelle Bachmann, Please Proceed; have an aghast gander at the Beloved of Fvx Nation Lady Loon's latest prurient and provocative tripe.

bachman-bible

Aren't we thrilled she's thinking of a 2016 Lipton Brigade sack race? Win one lousy Iowa straw poll …

This particular grim and gruesome Tea Party tale/#Fail comes courtesy of Pink News UK, recently discovered them as a terrific European source and get a huge charge out of their remarkable ability to peghole the Tea Party with exceeding brilliance and delicious reams of wry wit.

Have a look, then a listen as I'll embed the Right Wing Watch's incriminating audio for your benefit, further below. Major Ick. And a major tip o' the hat to RWW for the tremendously fine acquisition of the prurient evidence.

During conservative radio show Faith & Liberty, the Minnesota congresswoman said: “I think also they want to abolish age of consent laws, which means we will do away with statutory rape laws so that adults would be able to freely prey on little children sexually.

“That’s the deviance that we’re seeing embraced in our culture today.”

bachmannongaybullying

How hard do we hope Maddow gets wind and vocally distributes some judicious hell in an attempt to restore sanity to the debate?

Bachmann didn't leave it there. She went on to incriminate same-sex marriage as some Armageddon-inducing “radical experiment” sure to be wing-manned with “profound consequences”, “I think that nature tells us, our biology tells us that marriage is between man and a woman, when we tamper with something that was generated by the Creator of the Universe, I think there are profound consequences that we haven’t yet realized.”

NOWAY

Perhaps this too all taps back to the Constitutionally revered and protected Almighty U.S. Dollar … after all, Mr. Michelle Bachmann has his portion of the whole Pray Away The Evil Gay Industry to lead in their redneck corner of the Regressive Right Freaky Forest in Min-ne-soda.
