Michele Bachmann may be sued over “Protect Religious Freedom in The Military” campaign

bachmann pledge religion militaryLink

See that image? Here’s what the text says (bolding is mine):

What if our brave soldiers were told they couldn’t practice their religion? That they were able to fight for OUR religious freedoms but they couldn’t practice their own?

This may seem far-fetched, but unfortunately if some get their wish, it could soon become a reality.

You see, just last week Pentagon officials met with left-wing, anti-Christian activists to discuss military issues. And one of their biggest concerns? Not military readiness… Not sexual assault… Not the safety of our brave men and women… But religion and religious proselytizing in the military.

How radical are these anti-Christian activists consulting with the Pentagon? One of the activists in the meeting compared sharing the gospel to “spiritual rape” and “treason” that should be “punished.”

If you agree that we cannot and should not prevent our military from practicing their own faith, then I hope you will sign the pledge and afterwards forward to your friends and family.

That’s Michele Bachmann’s “Protect Religious Freedom in the Military Pledge” that she shared in a fundraising email to her supporters. Watch out for those “radical left-wing, anti-Christian activists”! They’re out to get you and turn you into godless, soulless, Satan-loving libs!

However, per Washington Whispers:

A series of media reports that allege the Pentagon could start court-martialing soldiers for their Christian faith has been debunked by the fact-checking website PolitiFact and even the Pentagon itself.

To quote Rick Perry, “Oops.” But ‘Chele didn’t let a little thing like facts stop her. And Mikey Weinstein– former Reagan administration lawyer and founder of the civil rights advocacy group Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF)– had a thing or two to say about that:

Now, the man at the center of the court-martial allegations, Mikey Weinstein, says he may sue Bachmann for “propagating complete and utter lies.”

As you can see, ‘Chele called Weinstein “radical” and “anti-Christian” in the pledge. Mikey had a thing or two to say about that, too:

“About 96 percent of our members [at MRFF] are Protestant or Roman Catholic… of our unpaid volunteers, at least well over 80 percent are Christian… I say [to Bachmann]: Tell it to the judge.”

Josh Glasstetter, research director at People For the American Way, said that Bachmann is forcing religion on people and that the military draws the line at “unwanted, intrusive attempts to convert others.”

Did Michele forget about that “stay out of our lives” obsession of hers? Apparently she did, at least when it comes to her own beliefs being shoved down the throats of others.

VIDEO: “You can’t ban abortion. Roe v. Wade, right?” Tell Arkansas, where they just passed an unconstitutional law.

Rachel Maddow:

There is something slightly inexplicable going on in the great state of Arkansas right now. The Republican-controlled legislature in Arkansas has just passed back-to-back unconstitutional bans on abortion.

You can’t ban abortion. Roe v. Wade, right?

Arkansas’ Democratic governor Mike Beebe vetoed both of the bans. No so much because he’s pro-choice, he actually has a mixed record on the subject. No, he has vetoed the bills because, dude, they are blatantly unconstitutional.

Quote: “The adoption of blatantly unconstitutional laws can be very costly to the taxpayers of our state.”

Well, today after already overriding the governor’s veto of the first ban, the Arkansas senate voted to override his veto of the second even stricter abortion ban. If the house also votes to override the veto, the ACLU naturally has already promised that costly lawsuit that the governor was talking about in his veto messages… …It is all but a forgone conclusion that the state will lose that lawsuit.

Guess what, Rachel, the New York Times has an update:

The law was passed by the newly Republican-controlled legislature over the veto of Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, who called it “blatantly unconstitutional.” On Tuesday the state Senate voted to override his veto by a vote of 20 to 14; on Wednesday the House enacted the bill into law by a vote of 55 to 33, with several Democrats joining the Republican majority. [...]

Adoption of the law, called the “Human Heartbeat Protection Act,” is the first statewide victory for a restless emerging faction within the anti-abortion movement that has lost patience with the incremental whittling away at abortion rights — the strategy of established groups like National Right to Life and the Catholic Church while they wait for a more sympathetic Supreme Court. [...]

Last weekend, a number of Democrats “got worked over” by constituents who support stringent anti-abortion measures, said Representative Greg Leding, 27, a Democrat and House minority leader.

Rita Sklar, director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas, said “ It shows an utter disregard for women and their ability to make important personal decisions about their own reproductive health.”

Rachel:

…Also, the legislature can go on record as having tried to illegally ban abortion, even though they all know that is not a thing they are allowed to do. Apparently nothing is a waste of money when it comes to making the same point ever more emphatically in anti-abortion Republican politics.

Catholic hospital argues fetuses aren’t people… for legal reasons.

hypocrisy meter 2

A Catholic hospital in Colorado argued in a court of law that fetuses are not people. Yes, you read that correctly.

Whether or not you agree with that position is one thing. Whether or not you agree that they look like blatant hypocrites is another.

Catholic Health Initiatives, the nonprofit that runs that facility, St. Thomas More Hospital, and 170 others, says their mission is to “nurture the healing ministry of the Church” and to be guided by “fidelity to the Gospel.”

Non-natural birth control and abortions are forbidden. “Catholic health care ministry witnesses to the sanctity of life ‘from the moment of conception until death,’” the [U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops] directives state. “The Church’s defense of life encompasses the unborn.”

Via The Colorado Independent:

Lori Stodghill was 31-years old, seven-months pregnant with twin boys and feeling sick when she arrived at St. Thomas More hospital in Cañon City on New Year’s Day 2006. She was vomiting and short of breath and she passed out as she was being wheeled into an examination room. Medical staff tried to resuscitate her but, as became clear only later, a main artery feeding her lungs was clogged and the clog led to a massive heart attack. Stodghill’s obstetrician, Dr. Pelham Staples, who also happened to be the obstetrician on call for emergencies that night, never answered a page. His patient died at the hospital less than an hour after she arrived and her twins died in her womb.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Stodghill’s husband Jeremy, a prison guard, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit [...]

But when it came to mounting a defense in the Stodghill case, Catholic Health’s lawyers effectively turned the Church directives on their head. Catholic organizations have for decades fought to change federal and state laws that fail to protect “unborn persons,” and Catholic Health’s lawyers in this case had the chance to set precedent bolstering anti-abortion legal arguments. Instead, they are arguing state law protects doctors from liability concerning unborn fetuses on grounds that those fetuses are not persons with legal rights.

So since the fetuses were not “born alive,” they were not considered to be “persons.” So much for all that personhood talk. These particular fetuses were not given the same legal status as the ones in the Sanctity of Human Life Act, a bill that Paul Ryan co-sponsored that gives full legal rights to human zygotes from the moment of fertilization.

But only because they couldn’t win a court case.

The legal arguments presented will undoubtedly spark a new round of endless debate, mainly because the hypocrisy of their legal defense is pretty jaw-dropping.

Moral of the story: Self-serving, cover-your-ass legal solutions trump religious beliefs and piety, even though money is supposed to be the root of all evil… except in cases where you stand to lose a major lawsuit. Then all that Cells, Zygotes, and Fetuses Are People Too talk goes right out the window.

If you thought Elizabeth Warren would take it easy on Capitol Hill, you’d be wrong

tough cookie

UPDATE: The blog headline refers to the early status of celebrity senators such as Al Franken and Hillary Clinton who chose to stay relatively quiet and out of the limelight at first. They “took it easy,” as opposed to what you’re about to read about Warren.

Original post:

This story illustrates why we pushed so hard to get Elizabeth Warren elected to the United States Senate. She knows what she’s doing, she gets it, and she’s not afraid to talk the talk and walk the walk, all on behalf of We the People. So when Elizabeth gets pissed off, watch out Corporate America, she means business.

Did I mention she was pissed off?

Warren took aim at the American International Group, the giant insurance company that BushCo bailed out was now considering suing the federal government because they thought the big bad bailout was unfair. Gee, why don’t I feel sorry for them? Aww, somebody better rev up the ol’ iPhone and call …

wah wambulance

Watch out, AIG… it’s not nice to mess with Senator Warren:

Via Business Insider and The Atlantic Wire, here is Elizabeth Warren’s most excellent response to AIG’s threat:

Beginning in 2008, the federal government poured billions of dollars into AIG to save it from bankruptcy. AIG’s reckless bets nearly crashed our entire economy. Taxpayers across this country saved AIG from ruin, and it would be outrageous for this company to turn around and sue the federal government because they think the deal wasn’t generous enough. Even today, the government provides an ongoing, stealth bailout, propping up AIG with special tax breaks—tax breaks that Congress should stop. AIG should thank American taxpayers for their help, not bite the hand that fed them for helping them out in a crisis.

bam

Did I mention how wonderful it is to have Warren in the U.S. Senate?

Ouch! Eliot Spitzer: “Nobody’s watching… Somebody needs to buy” Current.

I couldn’t help myself, I tweeted this link over to Keith Olbermann.

schadenfreude

Via Fishbowl NY:

oof

I caught up with Eliot Spitzer while he was waiting for his guest to arrive and asked him how he’s faring over at Current TV. “Nobody’s watching, but I’m having a great time,” he told me. “I don’t mean to be facetious, but I am really enjoying myself. It’s like having a cocktail party with friends every night.” Pausing for a moment he added, “Somebody needs to buy the network.” And perhaps they will, he mused, if for no other reason than to snap up Current’s distribution system.

ouch smallerIn case you missed it, Keith Olbermann sued Current TV.

Ron Paul Supporters Sue GOP, Claiming Intimidation

The Paulniacs are going for another stab at relevance!!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul have filed a lawsuit against the Republican National Committee and nearly every state party claiming they improperly helped Mitt Romney during the primaries while using intimidation and threats of violence to thwart them.

Paul’s campaign says the Texas congressman doesn’t support the lawsuit. An RNC official called it frivolous.

The lawsuit asks a federal court in California to clarify whether delegates attending the national convention in August can vote for any candidate they choose, even if they were won by Romney. Most state parties require delegates to vote for the candidate who won them in primaries or caucuses.

The lawsuit was filed June 11 by more than 100 people who say they are delegates, though some aren’t on lists released by state parties.

Gilchrist:

“We can beat the money.”

I wish I had his confidence.

:

Garlin Gilchrist II, MoveOn.org joins Thom Hartmann. Get your lawsuits ready – the state of Florida announced on Monday that it is filing a lawsuit against the Department of of Homeland Security to gain access to a federal database of undocumented immigrants so the state can continue its illegal purge of Democratic voters. A new poll shows a majority of voters in Florida oppose Governor Scott’s purge – and his own approval rating has plummeted to 31%. But Governor Scott knows what the rest of the Republican Party knows – and that’s that polls don’t matter – votes matter. And if enough Democratic voters are kicked off the rolls – then Mitt Romney will win in November – and Governor Scott will be re-elected a few years after. While the lawsuits play out in court – what can Floridians do now to protect their right to vote?
