White House threatens to veto House’s CISPA cybersecurity bill

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

The Hill:

The White House threatened to veto a controversial House cybersecurity bill on Wednesday, saying the measure would fail to protect critical infrastructure systems and would undermine Internet privacy.

The House is expected to approve the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) on Friday. [...]

The administration said it supports increasing information-sharing but that CISPA lacks adequate privacy protections.

You know who one of the authors is? Reps. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.). If you’re in Michigan and are not a fan of Rep. Rogers, please vote for Lance Enderle, who I’ve written about often.

Lance is running to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, a Progressive who absolutely must unseat Rogers.

You can see all our previous posts about Lance here, and read more about him at his own site here. Please consider donating, because his campaign is 100% grassroots.

Coincidentally, I just got this email from Demand Progress:

This is HUGE: President Obama just threatened to veto CISPA if it makes its way through Congress.

CISPA is up for a vote this week. It would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States, giving the government — including the military — broad new powers to spy on Internet users.

The White House’s letter expresses precisely the concerns that we’ve been highlighting over recent weeks — and is a result of the public pressure against CISPA:

  • The White House says that any cybersecurity legislation must preserve “Americans’ privacy, data confidentiality, and civil liberties and [recognize] the civilian nature of cyberspace.”
  • It says that, “The bill also lacks sufficient limitations on the sharing of personally identifiable information between private entities and does not contain adequate oversight or accountability measures necessary to ensure that the data is used only for appropriate purposes.”

And the letter goes on to assert that:

The American people expect their Government to enhance security without undermining their privacy and civil liberties.

Without clear legal protections and independent oversight, information sharing legislation will undermine the public’s trust in the Government as well as in the Internet by undermining fundamental privacy, confidentiality, civil liberties, and consumer protections.

Rep. Mike Rogers’ support of Keystone XL is about fear mongering, disregard for environment

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

The following is a cross-post (with permission) from my friend Lance Enderle’s site. Lance is running to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District in 2012, a Progressive who absolutely must unseat Mike Rogers.

You can see all our previous posts about Lance here, and read more about him at his own site here. Please consider donating, because his campaign is 100% grassroots.

If you need a reason to vote for Lance Enderle, here is one of many:

LANSING– Democratic candidate for the 8th Congressional District Lance Enderle today slammed Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Brighton) for his support of the ill-fated Canadian Keystone XL pipeline project.

The project would have traversed 1,200 miles of American soil, often in environmentally sensitive areas including a major aquifer, to transport tar sands oil from Canada to Texas. The oil in question is environmentally dangerous to remove from the earth, requiring massive amounts of water, steam and heat to remove, and must be mixed with other, lighter oil products to be transported under high pressure in pipelines. The oil is also tainted with toxic heavy metals like mercury.

The Obama administration on Wednesday announced it would reject the proposal for the pipeline. The move has been heavily criticized by Republicans, including GOP Rep. Tim Walberg, who represents Michigan’s 7th which suffered thelargest environmental disaster in midwest history in July of 2010. At that time, the Enbridge Energy Partners Lakehead Pipeline 6B burst open spewing an estimated 1.1 million gallons of toxic tar sands oil and the petroleum “diluent” into the Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. Cleanup continues from the spill, with the company and the EPA having trouble removing a heavy tar-like substance left behind from the spill which is now covering acres of the bottom of the river.

On his Facebook page, Rogers called the Obama administration decision “short-sighted,” claiming the move will “force” Canada to sell it’s toxic oils sands product to China, and enrich Iran in the process.

“Evidently, Mike has no clue about the internal politics of Canada,” said Enderle. “The First Nations of Canada have been very clear — they won’t allow pipelines to traverse their tribal lands, which would be necessary to fill tankers on the Pacific coast to tank over to China. And why do they oppose this? Because they know what residents of Calhoun County discovered in 2010 — oil sands oil is toxic, dangerous and nearly impossible to remove from the environment.”

“To claim that somehow Iran will ultimately be the beneficiary of Canadian oil to China is ridiculous on its face,” Enderle continued. “China is currently getting oil from Iran, and getting more oil from Canada will simply reduce the demand for Iranian oil, reducing Iranian oil money. Mike is scare mongering.”

“And all those jobs Mike is talking about? How many of them are ‘indirect’ jobs created by toxic, life-changing spills caused by improper handling of this toxic goo?” Enderle asked. “Yes we need jobs, but more jobs produced by scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel of oil production helps no one, and makes the U.S. put off the important job of leading the world into the development of renewable energy sources which do not cause environmental catastrophes.”

VIDEO- BLUNT: Rep. Mike Rogers, 99%er Santa says you’ve been a very bad boy!

My very pro-99%, very honest, very sweet friend, Lance Enderle, is running to represent Michigan’s 8th Congressional District in 2012.

Time to give Mike Rogers the boot. Please consider donating, because, as I said, Lance is a strictly grassroots candidate, a man of the people, not the corporate 1%.

It’s time to get Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) out of office.

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

Lance Enderle would like to represent the people of Michigan’s 8th district.

It’s time to get Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) out of office.

Lance and I became friends when he ran in 2010 and impressed me with how hard he fought for the 99% before it became popular as a movement. (All my posts about him are here)

Rogers, on the other hand, is tight with Jack Abramoff and is supported by K Street. But during his last campaign, Lance took no PAC money, had no TV ads, and placed no robo calls.

I’ve described Lance Enderle as someone who could very well become the new most “dangerous” man in Washington. Sort of an Alan Grayson with a James Earl Jonesish voice.

I also wrote back in 2010 that he cares about people, and by that I mean actual living, breathing people, not corporations. Not BP. Not Big Banks. Not Wall Street. Not K Street… as opposed to Republican Mike Rogers, the incumbent, who really ought to give the HBO movie “Gasland” a little look-see.

Lance is a natural. He’s charismatic, cares about all the right things, and could make a real difference.  Please get to know him on Twitter (@Lance_Enderle) and consider donating here.

RAW VIDEO from Michigan Protests: “Recall Rick!”

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

I got this literally seconds ago from my buddy Lance Enderle (who preceded me with a must-listen segment on yesterday’s Nicole Sandler Show), and is now officially part of the New Civil Rights Movement.

He is fighting Michigan’s attempts at “financial martial law” by self-appointed king, Gov. Rick Snyder, tooth and nail.

In 2010, Lance, a Democrat, ran for Congress, but sadly, incumbent 8th District U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers won. That isn’t stopping Lance though, he will likely run again.

Yesterday, he faced off with the press secretary of Michigan’s Speaker of the House, telling him and, indirectly, his boss, “I’m not gonna let you people destroy democracy.”

VIDEO: Lance Enderle to MI Speaker of the House Jase Bolger: “Quit giving me the bulls**t… I’m not gonna let you people destroy democracy.”

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

My friend Lance Enderle (who preceded me with a must-listen segment on yesterday’s Nicole Sandler Show), is now officially part of the New Civil Rights Movement.

Check out his confrontation with the Speaker’s press secretary yesterday:

Democratic candidate Lance Enderle organized a protest in the rotunda of the Michigan Capitol. In addition to concerns about Governor Rick Snyder’s plans to cut the corporate business tax while raising taxes on retirees and the poor, Enderle was specifically concerned about the Emergency Financial Manager bill that would allow the state to install managers to run financially strapped municipalities and school districts. Press Secretary Ari Adler came into the rotunda to talk to the protesters. This is an exchange between Enderle and Adler, followed by questions from Bonnie Bucqueroux and other journalists in the audience.

“Now what you guys did is allow one person to have omnipotent powers over something, and then you fiscally irresponsible conservatives wish to sit there and knock half these people’s pay?… Quit giving me the bullshit… I’m the position of the people… You did not speak for the people…”

“When these people decide to call their representative and show up at their office, at least have these representatives have the decency to earn their paycheck and meet with these people!” [applause]

I’m not gonna let you people destroy democracy.”

MI activists confirm plans to peacefully take King Rick’s Capitol. “Rick Snyder is Scott Walker on steroids.”

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

I’ve been in knots over the Wisconsin GOP’s utter disregard for democracy, as you know if you read TPC regularly. However, Michigan’s “financial martial law” is positively nauseating, as you can see from my previous post:

The senator also rejected claims by Democrats that the bill will destroy Michigan’s long history of local control by allowing the EMF to remove top administrators and elected officials, put millage increases on the ballot, lay off employees, slash services, and merge the city or school district with a neighboring government entity. Brandenburg said the EMFs will be deployed in communities that need “financial martial law

Thankfully, Michigan, with a little help from Michael Moore and my pal Lance Enderle (who preceded me with a must-listen segment on today’s Nicole Sandler Show), is now officially part of the New Civil Rights Movement. Via The Michigan Messenger:

A group of Michigan activists has confirmed that it plans to stage a protest in the state Capitol building at 4 p.m. today.

Lance Enderle, a former Democratic candidate for Michigan’s 8th Congressional district, confirmed moments ago that he is leading the protest.

“We are planning to exercise our free speech rights in a non-violent way,” Enderle said. “We will take the Rotunda, and we are not leaving.”

There’s more information at the link, including plans to arrest “trespassers” at the people’s own house.

Via Michael Moore:

The call has gone out and I’m asking everyone who can to take Wednesday off and head to the State Capitol in Lansing to protest the cruel and downright frightening legislation currently being jammed down our throats.

What is most shocking to many is that the new governor, who ran against the Tea Party and defeated the right wing of his party in the primaries — and then ran in the general election as “just a nerd from Ann Arbor” who was a moderate, not an ideologue — has pulled off one of the biggest Jekyll and Hyde ruses I’ve ever seen in electoral politics.

Governor Snyder, once elected, yanked off his nice-guy mask to reveal that he is in fact a multi-millionaire hell-bent on destroying our state and turning it over to his buddies from Wall Street. [...]

Please show up at noon on Wednesday for our first mega-rally against this insanity. Hundreds of groups are already organizing car pools and buses. You can right now just declare yourself an organizer and get your friends and neighbors committed to being in Lansing. If ever there were a day to call in sick, Wednesday is it (because this IS sick). Students, if ever there were a day to cut class and become a participant in your democracy, Wednesday is it. This event needs to be HUGE — and I believe it will be if you will simply be there and take a stand.

Much attention has been paid to Wisconsin in recent weeks. Well, they got nothing on what’s going on here in Michigan. Rick Snyder is Scott Walker on steroids. There’s never been what even the AARP calls “an all-out attack” like this on us. Trust me, you will rue the day you sat home and did nothing while thieves posing as politicians stole your Great Lakes State from you.

Don’t let it happen. Be at the capitol by noon on Wednesday for the largest demonstration the state has ever seen.

The war on the middle class is on, but we will win it. We have to.

VIDEO- GOP: We need mental health services, yet we want to repeal aid

Google GmailFacebookTwitterLinkedInStumbleUponRedditFarkDiggTumblrBlogger PostDeliciousFriendFeedNewsVineGoogle BookmarksGoogle ReaderMultiplyPosterousEmailBookmark/FavoritesWordPressShare

Republicans were for mental health care before they were against it before they were for it, against it, for, against, for, against…

Oh that’s right. Health care reform was President Obama’s baby, and we mustn’t provide for the robust health, safety, and welfare of Americans if it has his name on it anywhere.

Nice. Country first. Way to go.

Via Think Progress:

President Obama’s health reform legislation — which all Republicans now want to repeal — would go even further in helping Americans with mental illness. By 2014, families and individuals will be able to enroll in insurance through an expanded Medicaid program or the exchanges, where private companies will have to offer mental health and substance use disorder services as part of the essential package of benefits. The law also expands parity to a much wider pool, “making it possible for millions more people to get the same coverage for substance abuse and illnesses like bipolar disorder, major depression and schizophrenia as they would for, say, diabetes or cancer.”

To refresh your memories, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) ran against my buddy Lance Enderle. Lance plans on running again, so let’s get his name around whenever possible, so that by campaign time, voters are familiar with him, and he can beat the pants off Rogers.
