Overnight: Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

ISS Space Station

I was reading earlier today about the firms of Lavazzo and Argotec building an espresso machine for the ISS - the International Space Station. It is to be called the ISSPresso.

The picture of the actual ISS is above. It got me thinking about how far we've come since 1968 when '2001: A Space Odyssey' was made.

Here's the Wiki for the film: 2001

Sputnik, the first artificial earth satellite, has only been launched 11 years before, in 1957: Sputnik.

When I compare the images from today's ISS with Kubrick's and Arthur C. Clarke's vision, I'm astonished that Clarke could have envisioned a space station so well and that Kubrick - and his team, of course - could have brought it to the screen.

Here's an excerpt of the journey from earth to the space station:

Video Overnight Thread: Canadian Astronaut Answers Questions About Life on the ISS

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Typical Canadian, eh? A child's question: 'How big is the International Space Station?'. The astronaut's answer: 'Big - the size of five hockey fields.' What would similar answers be around the world? 'The size of five cricket fields.' 'The size of five ... is there any non-sport-venue answer which comes to mind?

My question: If the governments of the world can send people into space, why can't they solve more basic questions like keeping people healthy and working and not killing each other?

In any event, here's Chris Hadfield, Canadian Astronaut, answering school kids' questions on bathing, eating, cleaning up spills and performing other day-to-day activities beyond the reach of gravity.
