The Discerning Eye of Photographer Margaret Bourke-White

PNG2JPGMargaretBourkeWhitew365h244 A photographer has the unique ability to call the right shots in politics, history and entertainment.

Bourke-White, Central Moscow with antiaircraft gunners-1941

Her head tilted slightly to the left, her keenly intelligent gaze on the rapidly darkening horizon, Margaret deftly clicked some knobs into place on her Leica and breezily waved over one of the handful of suave, mustachioed Muscovite gentleman vying for her attention. "Vladimir! Do be a dear and strike a distinguished pose at the balcony rail so that I might check my focus?" Seconds after Vlad gratefully obliged, the siren she had been expecting careened shrilly into the genteel atmosphere, prompting the glittering hotel guests to obediently scoop up wraps and vodka tumblers and drift languidly back into the suite. Margaret adjusted one more tripod-mounted camera and her elegant auburn up-do,  then cooly slipped through the French doors herself. As the ponderous blackout curtains settled into place and the first barrage of German bombs rained down on Moscow, she smiled inwardly at the knowledge that her automatic exposure timers had assuredly recorded the dramatic event. Now here's a woman who looks forward … just the ticket for photography and passion. The Bourke-White  images range from the macabre to the divine - just like life. She got the shot.  margaret-bourke-white-the-louisville-flood

Few American pioneers of photography or photojournalism can lay claim to the panache or the professional legacy of the dauntless, daring Margaret Bourke-White ... particularly few women have a prayer of doing so. Many artists adventure, yet a scant handful participate in history. Over the wide-ranging course of her career, Margaret was in turn torpedoed in the Mediterranean, strafed by the Luftwaffe, stranded on a remote Arctic island, nearly eviscerated along with a German airfield near Tunis, obliged to enter Buchenwald with Patton, thoroughly blitz-bombarded in Moscow, and fished out of the chilly waters of the Chesapeake when her chopper crashed.

What Man in His Right Mind Wants Four More Wives?

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

polygamy

Of course, it's a question best posed for Orthodox Utah.

It's a great article, at Addicting Info, catch it all here, but these excerpts are a little scary. The Church of the Latter Day Saint$ has a whole lotta' growing up to do before they are truly inclusive.

Utah’s attorney general said Wednesday he was considering an appeal of a U.S. federal judge’s ruling that declared part of Utah’s bigamy law unconstitutional and which sided with the star of reality television show “Sister Wives” and his four wives.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes’ office said in a statement that attorneys were reviewing the ruling and could file an appeal in coming weeks.

Now I followed Big Love rather religiously when it ran through HBO the first time, and as much crazy that went on on that program, truth is always stranger than fiction. Hands down.

U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups on Wednesday finalized a December ruling that struck down a section of the law that bars consenting adults from living together in a romantic arrangement and criminalizes their intimate sexual relationships.

And could you imagine the alimony figures? The Mormons are a 'plainer' people historically, but I think I'd wager that the Roman Catholic Church could go toe to toe for assets.

Only Pat Robertson -- and his Flock -- Would Denigrate Robin Williams

This is so far past Ick that new adjectives need forming and disseminating.

But then again, Pat Robertson's middle name is Ick.

Robertson brings it back to liberal sin and excess every time, but targeting the revered and only recently passed Robin Williams was a Christian Slime move of the first water.

Don't you just want to move next-door to that?

Here are a couple of Robertson doozies:

'There is no such thing as separation of church and state in the Constitution. It is a lie of the Left and we are not going to take it anymore.'

dionpalin

'The flooding of New Orleans is a sign that God is tired of seeing his creation mocked by the Mardi Gras and its perverted display of debauchery and exposed breasts.'

Robertson has a catalogue of incidents (or perhaps a roomful of binders) that should have had him certified years and years and years and years and years ago. He's stuck somewhere between 1776 and 1945.

Sad, really … until you think about how many millions (perhaps billions) Robertson and his ilk of Ick have put the tithing squeeze on their subscribers/bank-roll/churchgoers to attain.

Five Children Murdered After They Were Deported Back To Honduras

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

So now the United States [and the budget conspiracy theorists] has gots some 'splainin' to do.

And by Hannity tonight, by O'Reilly tonight and after Rush Limpbaugh pulls a girl with terrible taste off him and lights a cigar at tea-time, we are going to see a boatload of blame offloaded on the president.

Starting to think Extreme Religionists, Open Gun Fondlers, Homicidal Abortion Opposition and the ones that are really engaged in a war on women should get their own little country.

ThinkProgress has details about this heart-wrenching cycle of poverty and no allocation of resources funded or enforced. Almost seems like a long, long way from Lady Liberty's message.

Between five and ten migrant children have been killed since February after the United States deported them back to Honduras, a morgue director told the Los Angeles Times. Lawmakers have yet to come up with best practices to deal with the waves of unaccompanied children apprehended by Border Patrol agents, but some politicians refute claims that children are fleeing violence and are opting instead to fund legislation that would fast-track their deportations.

San Pedro Sula morgue director Hector Hernandez told the Los Angeles Times that his morgue has taken in 42 dead children since February. According to an interview with relatives by the LA Times, one teenager was shot dead hours after getting deported. Last year, San Pedro Sula saw 187 killings for every 100,000 residents, a statistic that has given the city the gruesome distinction as the murder capital of the world.

This is a truly awful American Exceptionalist category to win.
