Talk To The Trees And They Now Will Listen To You

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Rain Forest

In 1951 a Broadway musical called Paint Your Wagon with book and lyrics by Alan J. Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe hit the boards. Then, in 1969 it became a successful film with popular songs like "They Call the Wind Mariah" and "Wanderin' Star."

But there was also another tune which Clint Eastwood sang in the movie version: "I Talk To The Trees."

I talk to the trees
But they don't listen to me
I talk to the stars
But they never hear me

Now there's a way to talk to the trees and they WILL listen to you.

According to HuffPo:

Did you know that Americans throw away 150 million cellphones every year? Well now there's a new way to put some of those old phones to use. A startup called the Rainforest Connection plans to turn old, unwanted Android phones into sophisticated listening devices that can help prevent illegal logging and poaching.

Waste not, want not. So don't just toss away those old phones when you get a new one. Do something good for the environment. Help prevent the destruction of the rain forest. A simple recycling or your old cell can help save the rain forest which in turn helps save our environment.

The phones will not only help protect trees and endangered species, they will also have a direct effect on the planet. Rainforest Connection says each of their deployed phones will save 300 hectares of forest. This will provide a CO2 benefit the equivalent of removing 3,000 cars from the road for a year.

That's so little effort to do so much good. Maybe next time you talk to the trees, they WILL listen to you. Or at least there will still be trees to talk to.

Supreme Court Rules for Companies in Hobby Lobby Case.

SCROTUS screwed us again. When Alito was rumored to be writing, we knew.

As feared, they ruled for the Green Family and Hobby Lobby and Born Again Wackadoos everywhere this disappointing Monday in late June. Poli-comedian John Fugelsang summed it up.

The women's movement just took a giant hit. From MSNBC news, the initial shock and awe. Craig Melvin had the anchor chair.

Absolutely catch Nicole Sandler's program now or later on Radio Or Not, as she superbly gives the Progressive view on Hobby Slobby and other SCROTUS rulings coming down the pike. And catch her post "Supremely Wrong", fresh this morning right here at the Carnival.

Some fine background from Think Progress should catch you up to where we are - still reeling from the decision and seeing how the ruling is explained to We the People.

From the day the justices agreed to decide whether employers with religious objections to birth control can refuse to follow a federal rule requiring employer-provided health plans to cover contraception, a broad array of Court watchers have treated the Hobby Lobby litigation as the single most important issue facing the justices this term, this site has probably given this impression as well.

Updates below on this absurd Hobby Lobby Ruling!

8:55 a.m. PST UPDATE From The Caucus Blogs at the New York Times:

Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the Court, declared that family-owned corporations like Hobby Lobby cannot be forced to pay for contraception for employees. The ruling means that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 applies to corporations, that the contraception requirement placed a substantial burden on companies like Hobby Lobby, and that the government has not chosen the least restrictive means to further a compelling governmental interest — the most demanding test in constitutional law.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, writing for the court’s four-member liberal wing, said the contraception coverage requirement was vital to women’s healthy and reproductive freedom. Justices Stephen G. Breyer and Elena Kagan joined almost all of the dissent, but they said there was no need to take a position on whether corporations may bring claims under the religious liberty law.

On that point, Justice Ginsburg, joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, said the court’s decision “is bound to have untoward effects” in other settings.

“The court’s expansive notion of corporate personhood,” Justice Ginsburg wrote, “invites for-profit entities to seek religion-based exemptions from regulations they deem offensive to their faiths.”

The Supreme Court’s ruling was greeted by cheers from anti-abortion groups that gathered at the court Monday morning. As soon as the decision was announced, chants arose of “Hobby Lobby wins! Hobby lobby wins!”

Lori Windham, a lawyer representing Hobby Lobby, celebrated the decision but was cautious in interpreting it, noting that the ruling was “narrow and careful.”

10:30 PST Analysis continues to grow. Ronan Farrow Daily at MSNBC had a roundtable to discuss.
Akhil Amar, Terry O’Neill, Karen Finney and Robert Traynham have a look at the Supreme Court’s ruling that once again puts businesses before people.

10:40 a.m. PST Nicole Sandler posted Supremely Wrong -- a Progressive do not miss.

1:30 p.m. PST Alex Wagner had some fine analysis on her MSNBC program, Now, at the top of the hour.

The House Votes For Another Crazy Bill

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Smoking A Joint Raw Story:

A Republican congressman has successfully pushed legislation to pressure the U.S. Department of Justice to crack down on marijuana in states that have legalized its use. “It is with growing alarm that we see this administration selectively executing and enforcing federal law,” Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) said Wednesday on the House floor.

Growing alarm, huh?

On Friday, a seemingly contradictory measure was passed. The House of Representatives approved an amendment to prohibit the federal agency from spending taxpayer money on activities designed to stop the use of medical marijuana in states in which such use is legal.

Then comes this dickwad from Louisiana. Somehow he got enough other bozos in the House to go along with him in trying to step their foot back down on the accelerator to force more arrests by the Justice Department. All this at a time when it's become more clear that marijuana busts are a racial issue. The numbers are staggering. But how about this wacky logic by Representative Fleming?  He's pushed through the following (by voice vote):

Fleming’s amendment reduces the Department of Justice’s Salaries and Expenses, Legal Activities account by $866,000 until the Attorney General enforces the Controlled Substances Act in every state.

So, by cutting the Justice Department's budget, how can they step up enforcement? What Fleming and his ilk have actually done is made it more unlikely the DOJ has the money to take on these marijuana cases. I guess this means stupid is as stupid does. Good work Republicans. Now I feel safer lighting up a reefer because there's less money to apprehend me.

First Lady Michelle Obama Can't Win For Trying To Shape Our Arses Up

The misogynist neo-con swinery are in full-fledged Rightly Ridiculous form.

It's not enough to label Texass' incredible Wendy Davis "abortion Barbie" and diminish the distinguished Alison Lundergan Grimes to an "empty dress" to try to win women's hearts … the Reich Wing has once again turned it's impotent weaponry on our FLOTUS.

We've all heard the disgusting freaky fringe of Rushbots and the Lipton Brigade make fun of "Moochelle's" efforts to -GASP!-  get children healthy, it is among their classier hate campaigns, right?

For Easter, Fvx News will Resurrect glory stories about the Nazi-esque 'Moochelle's' liberal brainwashing fixin' to get kids to perhaps exchange a healthy snack rather than the traditional packages of processed sugar ... complete with enraged Republican Mama Grizzly's, chubby sad children and victimized recriminations about the First Lady's Nerve.

The audacity. How dare she attempt to radically reduce childhood obesity? Make kids care about nutrition?! Suggest that we might be unable to cover our obese asses as nimbly as we once did? Uppity, bossy, brassy bare-armed beyotch ... just who does she think she is?

On Tuesday the impeccably fit Mrs. Obama announced a new initiative to continue promoting healthy eating and exercise into after-school programs. The Regressives screamed like we were coming after the coupons that getcha' six free gallons of Pepsi Cola with the purchase of every hundred rounds of ammo at Walmart in the months of March through May.

Contrarily, they are simply miserable about children eating well enough to grow like they live in a developed country. According to the conservatively ebullient and idiotic BizPac Review  (pack your Febreeze-lined BullShite Wellies):

One Illinois Republican lawmaker has asked the White House and the Obama’s to stop being “hypocrites” and practice what they preach about nutrition.

Davis’ bill, H.R. 3686, the School Nutrition Fairness Act, is “to make sure this Administration is aware of the real-life impact their regulations are having on kids who are going hungry and our smaller school districts who are struggling to keep up with the increased costs,” he wrote on FacebookTuesday.

Davis has to be a pal o' the Uber-Bum Rush. Limbaugh evacuated this FLOTUS-aimed manure Live onto the airwaves earlier this month. [Rush being so lithe, trim and virtually a Beckham Body-double.]

You'll notice that this dress is bigger than the president of France. Here, let me make one more adjustment here and I'll show you this again. Take a look at that picture. The little guy in the middle is the socialist dictator -- well, not dictator. He's the socialist president of France. On the left, that's not Oprah. Don't confuse that. That's Michelle Obama. I saw a picture of this from the rear. That's why I thought it was Oprah.

Obesity in pre-schoolers has dropped by 43% according to shocking numbers released this week -- my gawd, what is that evil heifer-woman up to?? Healthier toddlers? Reversing the epidemic of childhood obesity before it could be embraced and conserved??! Heinous.

Just as surely as Mormons publicly frown on private masturbation,  the Ridiculous Right will clearly, consistently gang-bash Michelle Obama for a n y t h i n g ... but this bigotry is truly a big bowl of wrong.

Female Orgasm Problems - A Head Case Says Cuntim

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Sad Woman Bed Orgasm

I don't know much more than any other guy about a woman's ability to orgasm. Truthfully, I've never thought of myself as a Lothario or great lover. I'm honest, compassionate and hopefully do my share of satisfying my wife. If not, then I thank her publicly now for her great acting. What a kind, believable soul she is.

But for those of you men out there that want to know more about pleasing your spouse, or women out there who find their expectations and climax to be less than hoped, there's some explanation and perhaps solutions. According to LiveScience:

The old adage that a woman's biggest sexual organ is between her ears may be true, according to new research that finds that a lack of erotic thoughts during sex is linked to the trouble some women have reaching orgasm.

Women who reported more trouble reaching orgasm during sex also had more automatic negative thoughts during the act. These negative thoughts included everything from those lacking erotic imagery to thoughts of sexual failure and sexual abuse.

Again, I'm no expert. But take some advice from a person who is... Marta Xavier Cuntim, a clinical psychologist in Portugal, told LiveScience.

Pardon my snickering at her name. I think it ranks up there in irony at least, with a man getting advice on erectile dysfunction by Dr. Dick Boner, Dr. King Stiffy or Dr. Rex Pussy.

About one in four women experiences difficulty reaching orgasm for months at a time, and the inability to orgasm is the second-most-common female sexual complaint after lack of desire.

From these statistics, I realize this is a real medical problem and I don't mean to diminish the frustrations many women -- and men -- go through attempting normal sexual bliss. And if there's hopes and cures for these problems, they should be spoken about openly and generously with their respective partners. Communication can be sexy and even arousing if it's honest. But I have a little juvenile streak in me that couldn't help but comment on this name game.

I apologize and shamefully confess that I'm a direct descendant of the Roman noble, Cassius Tiny Dickus. Okay. Now I've said it. I'll take my little boy toy and go sit in a corner for my time out punishment. If I'm lucky, I'll be joined there by Ms. Cuntim. You never know. Maybe she can teach me a trick or two.

SCOTUS To Hear GOP Plea To Allow Chemical Poisoning

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Coal Ash Spillcoal ash spill's destructive aftermath

By now we've all heard of the coal ash contaminants that have been wreaking havoc in North Carolina. If all goes as it appears, even GOP Governor McCrory might be going to jail when the dust settles. Carcinogenic-contaminated dust.

Over in nearby West Virginia, we've all heard about the multiple chemical spills by Freedom Industries, polluting the water in that state.

And these are just two of the more recent cases. There have been other chemical waste issues all across the country. And these aren't really accidents in the normal scheme of things. It's not like someone forgot to shut the door. It's worse than that. It's not the absence of adequate regulations. It's intentional.

Why?

Because the state governments have been under GOP anti-regulation delusion. They think that regulating chemical waste and storage is interference and that it affects the businesses' bottom lines. Forget what it does to the workers and the innocents who live in those areas. Just so long as it doesn't interfere with the cost of doing business, the GOP is all for it. Damn the people -- full profits ahead.

Turning their back on the safety of their state-wide constituents, the Republicans are setting course for harming or potentially killing all of us. They want to do away with safety regulations and restrictions over clean air and gas house emissions. Can't you just hear those Neanderthal Republicans? "Regulations... Baaad!!!"

HUFFPO:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Industry groups and Republican-led states are heading an attack at the Supreme Court against the Obama administration's sole means of trying to limit power-plant and factory emissions of gases blamed for global warming.

The court is hearing arguments Monday about a small but important piece of the Environmental Protection Agency's plans to cut the emissions — a requirement that companies expanding industrial facilities or building new ones that would increase overall pollution must also evaluate ways to reduce the carbon they release.

The importance of this case is astronomical -- almost literally. The Republican Party is determined to poison us with deregulation. If they can't stop people from voting, or better yet, voting against them, they seem to be taking another attack,-- just plain kill us. What they overlook in their ignorance is that they're killing themselves at the very same time. See what having no customers does to your bottom line.

air pollution

The air belongs to all of us equally -- and if you're going to pollute my air, you better be prepared for the consequences. As global warming and the greenhouse gases' various other effects are felt, we can't sit by and wait until it too late. Hopefully the SCOTUS will rule that way as well.

The Government has used eminent domain to confiscate property and condemn areas -- for the greater good.  The most common uses of property taken by eminent domain are for government buildings and other facilities, public utilities, highways, and railroads; however, it may also be taken for reasons of public safety. Isn't that what we're talking about here?

Maybe we should start looking at those companies who don't comply with the EPA regulations, which pollute and condemn our health and safety with the same "for the better good" doctrine. Confiscate them and sell them off at public auction, not to be reopened until they meet safety standards.

Monday's case, for which the court has expanded argument time to 90 minutes from the usual 60, stems from the high court's 2007 ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA, which said the agency has the authority under the Clean Air Act to limit emissions of greenhouse gases from vehicles.

Two years later, with Obama in office, the EPA concluded that the release of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases endangered human health and welfare. The administration used that finding to extend its regulatory reach beyond automobiles and develop national standards for large stationary sources.

Hopefully the mentally- and scientifically-corrupted and deficient Republican position will be defeated once and for all by the Supreme Court. It's wishful thinking that the GOP won't continue to attempt to retry and re-litigate this for years to come. But maybe they'll succumb to the dangers they have wrought upon all of us before any more innocents become afflicted or victims of global warming and chemical spills.
