VIDEO– PA Gov. Tom “You Just Have to Close Your Eyes” Corbett: Most unemployed people are on drugs

blame game smaller

Why, it seems like only yesterday that I posted PA Gov. Tom Corbett trailed all challengers by 9-plus points.

Oh wait. It was yesterday.

And now it’s today, and Tom “You Just Have to Close Your Eyes” Corbett is right back in the news, apparently making a perverse effort to widen those poll numbers even more.

When it came to his state’s unemployment numbers, Gov. Blamey McLowPolls pointed the finger at all those icky jobless Takers being on drugs:

“The other area is, there are many employers that say we’re looking for people but we can’t find anybody that has passed a drug test, a lot of them. And that’s a concern for me because we’re having a serious problem with that.”

Via Think Progress, where they note that out of all the people they drug tested in 19 Pennsylvania counties, only two people have failed:

During an appearance on a local radio show this week, Corbett sought to explain away Pennsylvania’s less than stellar performance, arguing that the state gained 111,000 private sector jobs since he took office and is “doing better than other states.”

At least he didn’t blame Obama. How novel.

Poll-itics: PA Gov. Tom “You Just Have to Close Your Eyes” Corbett trails all challengers

Need some good news? So do I. How’s this for starters: There’s some hopeful news about Pennsylvania’s Republican Governor Tom “You Just Have to Close Your Eyes” Corbett. The Willard M. Romney endorser, fracking fan, and pro-election-rigging schemer is losing in the latest Quinnipiac poll.

Via Taegan, we see that all three leading Democrats who might challenge Corbett in 2014 are beating him by at least 9 percentage points:

Joe Sestak (D) tops Corbett 48% to 34%, Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D) is ahead 47% to 34%, while Rob McCord (D) is up% to 35%.

Key findings: With a 2-1 thumbs down from women, voters say 50% to 32% that Corbett does not deserve reelection. His approval rate is 38% to 47%.

VIDEO: Rick Perry is “indeed” “open to the notion” of running for president in 2016. Name 3 reasons why, Rick.

oops rick perry smaller

Some things wear well, others wear out. Rick Perry falls into Category 2. He doesn’t wear well, and between making us point and laugh and cringe, he wore us out when he ran in 2012.

But that won’t stop him from trying again. Get out the popcorn. As you can see from the video, he was on on “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer.

Perry:

“Our legislature will be leaving in approximately 55 days. … At that particular point in time, I’ll sit down with friends and family and make a decision about 2016.”

Blitzer:

“So you’re obviously open to that notion?”

Perry:

“Indeed.”

It’s a good thing Ricky P wasn’t asked to name three reasons why he wants to run.

VIDEO: Alaska Republicans think the idea of civil unions for gay couples is funny, burst out laughing

separate but equal gay marriage civil unions

The Republican-led House Majority Caucus in Alaska thinks civil rights are a real knee-slapper, especially for those icky gay people who have– ew!– sex and stuff. Because that’s what this is all about: gay sex. Not lasting relationships, not commitment, certainly not equal rights, but– ew!– sex.

Towleroad has the appalling video:

Alaska’s Republican-led House Majority Caucus really gave had themselves a good laugh on Friday, when Mark Miller from the Juneau Empire asked if their upcoming initiatives include civil unions or domestic partnerships to same-sex couples.

Miller:

I’m looking at a recent Public Policy Polling survey of Alaska that found that only 30 percent of respondents believe there should be no legal recognition of gay couples’ relationships in Alaska. I was just curious, would the caucus support the idea of having domestic partnerships or civil unions open to same-sex couples?

(giggles, laughter)

House Leader Lance Pruitt:

“…We focused on the things that really allow people to have a great lifeWe didn’t have a discussion here about what happens inside your home. We had a discussion here about whether you can make money, whether there’s a great economy, and whether or not you’re going to have the opportunity to live in Alaska with a great future. Now, your discussion on that, we didn’t talk about that. I’ll be straight, we didn’t talk about that particular issue… It wasn’t something that came up in our discussion.

Ohhh, I see, they want to “allow people to have a great life”… unless they’re gay.

In case you didn’t catch the eleventy times Pruitt mentioned it, civil unions JUST DIDN’T COME UP.

And as he suggested (subliminally), he’ll “be straight,” see, because, in case you may have thought otherwise, HE’S NOT GAY.

Are Republicans trying to become obsolete, or are they truly so dense that they cannot recognize what’s happening to their own party? The GOP can’t stop losing, and a big, thick, juicy, new, improved Civil War is infecting the Republican Party.

The GOP can’t stop losing

gop fail 2

Today’s L.A. Times letter to the editor, because our voices matter:

Re “Obama sells economic ideas, but GOP resists,” Feb. 14

This is weird. Even though the GOP was soundly defeated in the last election, its elected officials continue to think they had a really good strategy to take back the White House. Their plan was to attack the president and his ideas and hope that everyone would say, “Yeah, Barack Obama is bad, so I’m voting for Mitt Romney.”

So here we are: Obama is back in the Oval Office, and the Republicans are attacking and obstructing without offering anything of substance.

House Speaker John A. Boehner‘s (R-Ohio) latest plan is to “get people on the ladder and help them climb that ladder so they can live the American dream.” Thanks for the specifics, Mr. Speaker.

The GOP had no plan, and that is how it lost the election.

Yep, still a pig, Reince Priebus

lipstick on a pig

Taegan found this quote at Politico from RNC chair Reince Priebus:

“It’s not the platform of the party that’s the issue. In many cases, it’s how we communicate about it.”

No, it’s both, Reince. Good communication techniques are helpful, but first you need a message or twelve that, you know, resonate, or down you go again.

Priebus is now channeling Karl Rove, who said to the GOP: Just don’t *sound* intolerant.

Mitt Romney famously said, “It would be helpful to be Latino.” So he, too, was hoping to appear to be someone voters could relate to, but had no intention of changing his message. Not really. Whatever that message was at the moment.

And Bobby Jindal said, “If we want people to like us, we have to like them first.”

Again, it’s one thing to be introspective and see the error of your ways. It’s quite another to do an abrupt 180 and pretend you care, hoping nobody will notice that you’re pandering your ass off.

Here’s what I wrote back in November, responding to Rove’s inanity:

So as long as you don’t sound intolerant (or racist, or bigoted), as long as you can pretend you’re one thing while believing another, as long as you put on a good show, you’ll dupe Americans into voting for you. Never mind genuine outreach, just say the right words, sell the right product, be extra careful to couch your disdain in prettier language and voila!

Superficial fixes will pave the way to big election wins if they’re wrapped up real purty with a big bow. Those ignorami will never catch on…

Yet Reince Priebus still believes if his party members use appealing wording and the right catch phrases, yet adhere to the same anti-women, anti-LGBT, anti-voter, anti-civil rights, anti-economic growth, anti-Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security, anti-postal service, anti-union, anti-middle class policies, America will magically fall in love with them and reward them at the ballot box.

The GOP has learned nothing.

They still have no foresight or grasp of the health of our planet and want to do away with the Environmental Protection Agency.

They still want to do away with unions.

They still want to do away with the middle class.

They still want to do away with the Democratic party.

They still want to do away with free speech and expression.

They still want to do away with human dignity.

They still want to do away with civility toward anyone who is not like them, meaning white and/or Christian.

They still want to do away with health care for anyone but the wealthiest AmericansEspecially women’s health care.

They still want to do away with allowing two people who love each other to marry each other.

They still want to do away with privacy and freedom of choice.

They still want to do away with taxes for the very wealthy, not to mention productive spending and job growth at the expense of the health and welfare of this country.

No rewording can do away with all that.

Why Bobby Jindal is aiding and abetting the transformation of the GOP into “the stupid party”

BOBBY-JINDAL-AND-KENNETH-THE-PAGE-large

(Apologies to Kenneth the page)

Think Progress is reporting about a speech to the Republican National Committee by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal in which he said that the GOP “must stop being the stupid party”:

We must stop being the stupid party. It’s time for a new Republican party that talks like adults. It’s time for us to articulate our plans and visions for America in real terms. We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. We’ve had enough of that.

Perhaps one way to stop being the stupid party is to get new– and adult– members by ridding itself of people like Jindal. And Cantor. And Ryan. And Bachmann. And McConnell. And so many others.

TP goes on to list five ways that Jindal is responsible for transforming the GOP into “the stupid party.” Here are the ways, but please link over to read the details:

1. He permits Louisiana schools to teach creationism. (We covered that here in posts about the amazing anti-creationism efforts of my teen activist pal, Zack Kopplin.)

2. He allows state employees to be fired for being gay.

3. He has signed bills to intimidate women seeking abortions. J

4. He seeks to dramatically cut taxes for the wealthy, increase taxes for everyone else.

5. He refuses to provide health care for Louisiana’s poorest.

Let’s expand on those:

In that post, I wrote:

Bobby states, with a straight face, that his party will actually “have” to try to “like” people who aren’t white, male, and wealthy. They’re forced to do that now, because, hey, they’re going to run for office, for Pete’s sake! What an effort that will be! Maybe if they close their eyes real tightly and hold their noses, they can tolerate getting within a few feet of a few select people who don’t look, act, or sound like them.

Without saying “Ew!” I mean.

 The stupid party. Ew.
