Time to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment

Back in 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment, which guaranteed equal rights for women, passed both houses of Congress but couldn't get enough states to ratify it. As a result, women today are still struggling for equal rights. In 2014. Still struggling to be treated equally. Um what? But... but... Republicans say there's no War on Women.

Luckily, women who are abandoning their binders have discovered they have many strong allies, including one with a particularly effective voice: Ohio State Senator Nina Turner, who is currently hoping to unseat Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted.

My Twitter pal Portia Boulger took part in a kickoff event at which Sen. Turner was the keynote speaker, a fundraiser calling for voters' rights and the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. She emailed me this enthusiastic comment:

Power! Unity! Magic! That’s what we all experienced as we sat spellbound listening to Ohio Senator Nina Turner speak. Those who were fired up when they entered were ablaze when they left. The lady is on FIRE! Because of her willingness to join us, there are many more who are joining our fight to build a nationwide campaign to extend Voter Rights and ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

Regular readers know how important fighting voter suppression and standing up for women are to The Political Carnival (scroll). The Progressive Democrats of America are helping us fight these battles:

Turner also supported the PDA in its efforts concerning the Equal Rights Amendment, calling it “a beautiful thing” and noting that the best way people can get their voices heard is when they go to the polls.

“We are all equal when we go to vote,” Turner said. [...]

“Women have been relegated to second-class citizens,” Turner said.

Tammy Simkins, co-founder of ERA Action, told attendees that people must be united and that her grassroots organization is seeking to “bring attention to the fact that women are not equal in 2014.”

She added that she believes voting rights “are under attack” and that change is needed.

The Tea With The Friends Of Alice Paul took place on March 22nd. At about 9:40 in the video below, Tammy Simkins said that 9 of the 15 unratified states are pushing ERA legislation at the state level. She also said that Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown are backing federal legislation, which brings the total number of senators supporting the bill to 34:

Stick it to Rush, Glenn, Sean... and Clear Channel for giving Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes the boot in L.A.

PLEASE donate here. I did. Here's why:

I was fuming yesterday, and I continue to fume today. However, I am turning that fume-itude into constructive revenge, if you will, by writing this post.

Yesterday I discovered that my local Los Angeles Progressive radio station, KTLK-- the only one that exists to serve the area, including "Liberal Hollywood"-- is dumping all Progressive programming and handing the air waves over to the far right. In other words, what was left (no pun) of the left will be gone: No more Stephanie Miller Show to wake up to and point and laugh with, no more Randi Rhodes to inform us and rant with, no more liberal voices on L.A. AM radio. At all. Anywhere on the dial.

Instead, we get Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and who knows who else spewing lies and slinging mud. And by "we" I don't mean me. Hellz to the NO.

Au contraire, I had a lovely chat with Steph's producer extraordinaire, Chris Lavoie, yesterday who filled my weary, outraged little noggin with options and information that I am now sharing with you, below.

Meanwhile, there was an article about all of this ins-hannity in my morning Los Angeles Times, which has now been inexplicably edited for the online version.

You can read what's left of the article to see what's going on in California's "liberal media" here, but one very important excerpt that was cut is the following:

Tom Taylor, an independent reporter who has covered the radio industry for two decades, noted that the creation of "The Patriot" [the new lineup for KTLK] comes as the United States enters a midterm election year, meaning there will be ample money spent on political advertising. "The calendar's important here," he said.

Got that? Timing is everything. So is money, apparently.

Just FYI, I've listened to KTLK since Day One, back when Air America was barely alive and kicking, and there was absolutely no promotion of that station whatsoever, anywhere. How could they attract listeners without advertising? Uh huh.

The then-station manager and I were in contact often; he relied on me in KTLK's early days "to be his ears" because I would email him when there were audio glitches, and there were many. We'd email back and forth about how the infant station was doing, but still, there were no ads letting Progressive listeners know that there was a radio outlet especially for them.

But as time passed, the general manager lost his job, Air America went away, Thom Hartmann was replaced, and gradually "Your Progressive Talk Station" morphed into something less-than. Steph and Randi are the only remaining nationally known hosts, and now their voices-- and ours-- have been stifled by the usual corporate conservatives. They already monopolize the news media, but that's not enough for these greedy, war-on-everything that's not old, male, and white bottom-feeders.

Should you be searching for a way to stick it to KTLK, to the right wing extremist schlock jocks, and to Clear Channel, Stephanie and Co. have provided different ways to access her show:

The Stephanie Miller Show can be heard on Broadcast radio, SiriusXM, Streaming via Progressive Voices on TuneIn and Premium On-Demand Subscription Podcasts.

So Congressman Lamborn, How Do You and Uncle Remus Really Feel

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Tea party burning cross

Yesterday Florida Congressman Alan Grayson came under an amazing amount of heat for a picture he included on a fundraising letter sent out to his constituents and contributors. He was lambasted on the right, the very far right, for using an image of a burning cross and associating it with the Tea Party.

I personally enjoy the unbridled behavior and unfiltered comments that the representative has become known for. Unfortunately, he may have stepped over the line with this one. I said, "May."

"[T]here is overwhelming evidence that the Tea Party is the home of bigotry and discrimination in America today, just as the KKK was for an earlier generation," he said in a statement provided to HuffPost. "If the hood fits, wear it."

Without a doubt, the right wing extremists have made some amazingly over the top, out of bounds statements about the President as well. As the commander in chief, he's fair game -- when the criticisms are based on his actions, not his race or his religion. We've heard the Tea Party mouth that roared, Larry Klayman as he made religiously malicious statements about the President being on his knees, bowing to Allah and needing to put his Quran down and come out with his hands out (up).

I didn't see anyone on the right or in the tea party saying THAT crossed the line.

Then there was Congressman Doug Lamborn who said this:

So Obama's called out as a "Tar baby" and I didn't see anyone from the right or the Tea Party saying that crossed the line.

But Alan Grayson equates the intolerance of the Klan with the Tea Party and he's now to be shunned, reprimanded and made a pariah?

Perhaps. It's a thin line he's traversed. There is certainly vociferous public outcries against Obama and all Blacks for that matter from geographic regions where the Klan publicly and openly still reside. And government voting records show those areas did NOT vote for Obama. But does that allow us to paint those specific regions with a broad brush of racial intolerance?

Reality says, yes. Propriety and respect for differences of opinion say no.

I wish Rep. Grayson hadn't used such an inflammatory image, whether or not I agree with his "copy" that accompanied the picture. But if I condemn or chastise his questionable taste, shouldn't the Tea Party also be up in arms (maybe they prefer lighting a cross) over the racially charged, intentional slurs their party's spokespeople have heaped upon the duly elected President of the United States?

Oh, that's right, the Tea Party still denies his election was legal. Something about where he was born. They can have that argument, but then they must apply it equally to Canadian-born Rafael Cruz, their poster boy. Wouldn't that be the only fair thing to do? That's the American way. That's the Constitution.

Fairness isn't something the Right exercises very often. Aside from the right to bear arms, they have a squishy record on the other pieces of the Bill of Rights and the entire Constitution with its amendments.

So I'll go on record that the line of taste and propriety was dinged, if not outright crossed by Grayson, but not until someone on the Right or the Tea Party (generally the same people) comes out and condemns Klayman and Congressman Lamborn for their egregious, shameful remarks.
