Bang! Chris Hayes fact checks Gun Owners of America's Larry Pratt.

fact checks - Mitch McConnell prisoner to facts

Last night on "All In," Chris Hayes had an unbelievably frustrating chat with Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America. It was about the powerful gun fondlers' organized intimidation and obstruction of smart gun sales. The  more Hayes tried to get Pratt to answer straightforward questions, the more unreasonable, obnoxious, and evasive Pratt became. But Pratt got his just desserts in an update only a few minutes later in which Chris Hayes-- you should excuse the expression-- shot down his lies. Fact checks are wonderful things.

Please watch the entire segment, and check out the very, very end when Pratt gestures as if he's shooting a gun:

I've searched everywhere for the video clip of Chris's rebuttal, but couldn't find it. Instead, this transcript will have to suffice:

HAYES: Were you watching that earlier tonight? Larry Pratt, head of Gun
Owners of America, making his favorite claim about the supposed failure
rate of the smart gun technology we have been reporting on here.

I would like to take a moment to do a little fact-check on that figure he
was quoting from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has the number
right, 20 percent failure rate, except that study wasn't of the Armatix
smart gun we were discussing.

It was the rate of a prototype fingerprint recognition technology being tested at the institute 11 years ago.

Google is a wonderful tool, Larry.

And then, exquisitely executing the ultimate mockitude, Chris Hayes gestured, a la Pratt, as if he were shooting a gun.

fake gun bang flagFact checks are wonderful tools, too, Larry. So are MSNBC hosts who are-- you should excuse the expression-- quick on the draw.

UPDATE: My contact at MSNBC was kind enough to provide the clip for me! Best 48 seconds ever:

Team Obama: “We do care about fact-checks."

Remember this?

The Washington Post's "Fact Checker" awarded Romney's ad "four Pinocchios," a measure Romney pollster Neil Newhouse dismissed.

"Fact checkers come to this with their own sets of thoughts and beliefs, and we’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers," he said. The fact-checkers — whose institutional rise has been a feature of the cycle — have "jumped the shark," he added after the panel.

Well guess what? Team Obama cares about trying to get the truth out there, as opposed to Lyin' Ryan and his fellow dog tar-and-featherer Willard M. Romney.

The Hill reports:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — President Obama’s campaign on Tuesday said it cares “about fact-checks” as it sought to contrast the accuracy of its messaging with Mitt Romney’s campaign. [...]

We work very hard to get it right,” Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said during an ABC News-Yahoo panel discussion. “We look at the facts. We vet what we say.” [...]

We do care about fact-checks,” added deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, who was sitting beside LaBolt on the panel. “We do care about the honesty of our own ads.”

Democrats and Republicans are not equal; their platforms are miles apart. But one other huge difference between the two that would attract all kinds of positive attention would be the Dems holding a convention at which nothing but the truth is told and fact-checkers are bored. Being the party of credibility vs. the party of GOP lies and misinformation would be a wonderful outcome and one more way to convince voters to cast their ballots for people who respect them enough to be honest with them.

Media Matters Conspiracy? Looks Like Fox/Daily Caller Conspiracy!

About a month ago I began to notice a huge increase in Fox's attacks on Media Matters from about once or twice a week to one or two a day, mostly on Fox and Friends, O'Reilly or Hannity. Here are some chyrons from Fox & Friends**-

A Liberal Influence; Revealing the funding behind Media Matters

The Money Behind The Machine; David Brock Committed to a Quiet Room

Financing the War on Fox; Brock used to be a Republican, now a Liberal

Media Matters’ Money; David Brock is an admitted drug user

A Liberal influence; Brock spent time in a mental ward

Unusual, but I just figured with the economy getting better they were flailing around for anything to hyperventilate over, and their viewers do so enjoy stories of evil librul entities "co-ordinating" with the Kenyan Socialist Not-Like-Us Administration. Enter Tucker Carlson's pixilated fish wrap "The Daily Caller" and its "multi-part expose"-

Relying on tax returns and websites of wealthy U.S. foundations, a Daily Caller investigation has revealed the sources of more than $28.8 million in funding collected by the liberal Media Matters for America since 2003, the year before its formal incorporation. That sum represents 54 percent of every dollar the organization has raised in its history, making Media Matters a principally foundation-driven — not citizen-supported — activist group.

Wow, 2.8 mil in just under 10 years, which comes to um.... about 3 mil a year. That in all that time The Soros Monster has contributed just over $1 mil is unconscionable, outrageous and totally criminal!!! I mean the Koch brothers won't piddle under 2 mil for their most visible beneficiaries, it's just so uncouth.

But then David Brock has a temper! And his assistant legally carries a gun! He was adopted! On and on last week, getting more personal and nasty as it went along.

I received in my mail yesterday, written by Mr David Brock and a MM colleague, the preview copy of “The Fox Effect: How Roger Ailes Turned a Network into a Propaganda Machine” It's released on Tuesday.

Not that it sounds coordinated or anything…

**NOTE- This from the Brave New Films associated site Newhounds. Both have been going after Fox and Ailes for years, and I've never seen this kind of concerted effort aimed at them. I've only dipped into the book, but I plan to write about it later this week.
