Shooting Down Another GOP Talking Point On Benghazi

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Abu Khattal

Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi. That's the war cry from the Republicans. It's the tragedy that became a scandal that became a fund raising cause célèbre. Now that the ringleader has been caught, the Republicans don't know what to do. They'd already held seven hearing trying to place the blame on Obama. All seven failed.  Then recently, to huge fanfare, Speaker John Boehner named a special House select committee to try to pin blame on the president. Then the inevitable happened. Obama rained on their parade. He authorized the capture of Benghazi mastermind, Ahmed abu Khatallah.

So first the Republican alarmist tried to diffuse and obfuscate the capture by questioning the timing. It had to do with Hillary Clinton's going on CNN and Fox News to talk about her book sales. Really? Like Obama would really time the capture to coincide with a book signing tour for Hillary Clinton? C'mon Republicans, you can do better than that.

And they tried. They then claimed that Al Qaeda ringleader Ahmed abu Khatallah wasn't really hiding. He could have been captured earlier. This guy was so visible he was even giving interviews to news journalist over the past two years. The administration was dragging its feet because they knew he'd blow the lid on how Al Qaeda was planning the Benghazi attack for weeks and it had nothing to do with an anti-Muslim video as the US had initially claimed immediately after the attack.

So why hadn't the administration captured or killed abu Khatallah?  What were they waiting for? Were they afraid he would prove Obama lied and was involved in a cover-up?

According to The Daily Beast:

Unlike the October 5, 2013 capture Abu Anas al-Libi, an accused planner of the 1998 al Qaeda attacks on U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the authority to capture abu Khatallah did not derive from the congressional authorization to go to war against al Qaeda.

While House and Senate investigators have said their probes have turned up evidence that the Benghazi attacks were coordinated and planned by people working with al Qaeda affiliates, the U.S. intelligence community has not determined that abu Khatallah was himself connected to al Qaeda. Without such a connection, the U.S. president was not authorized to kill or capture him under the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force against al Qaeda.

So, we followed the law. And while we were gathering information, collecting evidence against the Benghazi ringleader, we had him on our radar and were shadowing him, getting Intel on him and his cohorts. Evidence that would be crucial during the trial and also lead to other arrests/captures as Obama promised the night of the attacks.

As for the reason abu Khatallah has given for the Benghazi attack he's accused of masterminding that killed the four Americans? According to the New York Times:

But Mr. Abu Khattala told other Libyans in private conversations during the night of the attack that he was moved to attack the diplomatic mission to take revenge for an insult to Islam in an American-made online video.

This all leads back to square one. Obama told the truth as he knew it. Hillary Clinton told the truth as she knew it. And Susan Rice delivered the truth as it was known at the time on the Sunday Talkers.

Where's all this leave the House special committee? In the toilet, where they belonged in the first place.

Obama Exiles Opponent With Ambassadorship

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Mr. Magoo

The political game of chess continues and the bishop to King's pawn move is on the clock.

One of the most vocal opponents of the Affordable Care Act comes from the Democratic side. It's often loud-mouthed, twisted logic Montana's very own Mr. MaGoo, Senator Max Baucus. If only Jim Backus was still alive, he could play him in the Baucus Raucus Caucus Lampoon movie. Slappy Maxie is kind of the Senate's version of Leslie Nielson -- from Police Squad. You never know what's going on in his head.

Now following in his earlier steps to remove a political adversary by making him the ambassador to China (John Huntsman), Obama is returning to his playbook. He's nominating Max B to the ambassadorship of China -- a place where he can do little harm and be as far away from the furthering battles over the Affordable Care Act which Baucas opposes.

There's also a little bit more to this game plan. Obama knows that the current governor of Montana, Governor Steve Bullock will most likely appoint Lt. Gov. John Walsh to replace Baucus in the Senate. Walsh is already an announced candidate to fill the Baucus seat and his presumed opponent is Rep. Steve Daines. Leading into this recent move, this contest was considered to be one of the most competitive Senate races in the country.

This move with Walsh will give him added bona fides in his race as he will run as a sitting senator. It's a small thing, but it's certainly a great opportunity to increase his name value and recognition both statewide and nationally.

The chess game continues. This is one move that I can't find any shortcomings in. Democrats need to keep control of the senate, and this is going to help. It's no guarantee, but I like the chances of holding this seat democratic.

Jeb Bush Got It Wrong -- Again

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Obama closes Vatican embassy

The Bush family of blunderers is at it again. First it was GHW  'no new taxes' Bush,  then the ever-challenged scion GW 'Iraq is my game' Bush, and now older brother, Jeb 'Lost in the' Bush. Can a family really be that misinformed collectively? Two Presidents and a governor and not a penny of common sense among them?

Well, seems the Bushes could easily be a sketch on SNL once again -- "Meet The Foot-in-Mouth Family."

According to HuffPo reports,

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) called out President Barack Obama for closing the U.S. embassy to the Vatican, questioning whether the decision was political "retribution" for Catholic opposition to the Affordable Care Act.

Here's the actual tweet: (from @JebBush on Twitter)

Why would our President close our Embassy to the Vatican? Hopefully, it is not retribution for Catholic organizations opposing Obamacare.

There's just one small problem. The Vatican Embassy isn't actually closing. It's moving. A bit of a difference there, but subtly has never been a Bush family trait.

For cost saving purposes, some $1.4 million per year, the current standalone embassy will relocate to a larger compound shared with the U.S. Embassy in Italy, as well as the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. New address. Same embassy.

Okay, it's possible Jeb the dunce missed this, but then to accuse Obama's decision as being a political "retribution" for Catholic opposition to the Affordable Care Act. That takes some balls. And Jeb doesn't have them.

Apply this logic and see where it takes you. Obama is closing (or moving) the US facility to the Vatican, Pope Francis's home, because of fear over the the Catholic Church's take on healthcare? That's what Jeb's saying. But it's also not true. The Church is absolutely for the Affordable Care Act.

It was just a few days ago that the Pope, the Holy See, came out publicly and nailed the US Republicans to the holy cross for their discarding the poor in favor of the almighty dollar?

Doesn't Jeb have a TV or radio? Is he too ignorant to know how to turn it on? You can't have missed the Pontiff's speech. Even Fox News covered its contents, before labeling Francis a heretic.

Pope Francis, in his first apostolic exhortation has condemned the trickle down economics, the mainstay of the Reagan-GHW Bush fiscal plan. Pope Francis also denounces tax evasion and economic inequality, and he exhorts governments to ponder a saying that “not to share one’s wealth with the poor is to steal from them and to take away their livelihood.”

That condemnation, my dear readers, is of the Republican Party platform and programs. It is though, what the the church says is categorically "unchristian."

So letting logic dictate, if anyone wanted to shut the Vatican Embassy down, it would be Bush's GOP party. Fortunately, no such move is planned. A cost cutting effort to bring our budget under control is being exercised by Obama. It's called fiscal prudence, not political retribution. That's the Tea Party's game, not Obama's or the Democrats.

Jeb, you're the acorn that didn't fall far from the Bush-- but the fallow one that never took root. Time to abort.
