This is a cross-post thanks to our wonderful friend Anomaly from FreakOutNation - on Twitter as @anomaly100.

The Walt Disney Company has fabulously given notice to the Boy Scouts of America, stating that it will pull all funding to the group beginning in 2015 due to a BSA membership policy that bans gay leaders, the entertainment company announced on Friday.

My Fox 8 reports, “Disney does not give money directly to the national organization or local BSA councils. However, through its VoluntEARS program, Disney allows employees to do volunteer work in exchange for cash donations to the charities of their choice.”

Those employees who take part in the VoluntEARS program will no longer be allowed to submit the funds to the Boy Scouts, according to the organization.

However, the new policy will not affect Walt Disney employees who volunteer with the Scouts.

BSA spokesman Deron Smith said in a statement, “We believe every child deserves the opportunity to be a part of the Scouting experience, and we are disappointed in this decision because it will impact our ability to serve kids. America’s youth need Scouting, and by continuing to focus on the goals that unite us, we continue to accomplish incredible things for young people and the communities we serve.”

Via My Fox 8:

According to Disney’s charitable giving guidelines, groups become ineligible to receive Disney funding if they “discriminate in the provision of services unlawfully or in a manner inconsistent with Disney’s policies on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, national origin, age, marital status, mental or physical ability, or sexual orientation.”

Disney would not divulge its formula for converting volunteer hours to dollars, but a chart on Disney’s corporate website shows that in 2010, employees raised $4.8 million via 548,000 volunteer hours, which works out to $8.79 an hour.

Disney’s decision carries a lot of weight. I wonder how many Republican congressman will volunteer to raise funds for the organization.

California lawmakers OK a dozen gun-control measures

gun control california

Another reason I am a proud California native and lifetime resident, via the Los Angeles Times:

SACRAMENTO — California lawmakers Wednesday advanced a dozen gun-control measures, including background checks for ammunition buyers, and gave early approval to a tax penalty on the Boy Scouts for barring openly gay leaders. [...]

Other bills approved in one house Wednesday would:

Allow those who may be in the country illegally to obtain a California driver's license if they can provide documents to establish their identity and residency in the state.

Require the state to develop restrictions on an oil production technique called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

• Shift $600 million in bond authority from a little-used home loan service for military veterans to other programs that could help provide them with affordable housing and counseling services.

What a bunch of hippie commie dictators.

What I will not write about today

Sometimes I get so frustrated and/or disheartened and/or annoyed by some of the news stories of the day that I can’t bring myself to write about them. Here are a few recent reports that made my blood pressure hit the roof. I am avoiding delving into them at length out of concern for my physical and mental health.

  • Boy Scouts Propose Allowing Gay Scouts, But Not Gay Scout Leaders -- "The resolution includes the claim that screening adult leaders is important for 'protecting Scouts.'”  Forget about protecting equal rights. Forget about protecting everyone from discrimination and prejudice. Just protect the Scouts from every single gay man who ever lived, because clearly they are all icky pedophiles who are into bestiality and incest.

See what I mean? So who’s up for a couple of Margs or a trough of wine?

Boy Scouts of America delay vote on ending gay membership ban

You missed the opportunity to enter the 21st Century, BSA.

(Reuters) - Boy Scouts of America board members on Wednesday delayed until May a vote on whether to end a longstanding and controversial ban on gay membership.

The century-old youth organization had been expected to vote on the matter at a board meeting in Dallas on Wednesday. The Boy Scouts upheld the ban just last year but faced sharp criticism from gay rights groups.

"After careful consideration and extensive dialogue within the scouting family, along with comments from those outside the organization, the volunteer officers of the Boy Scouts of America's National Executive Board concluded that due to the complexity of this issue, the organization needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy," the Boy Scouts said in an emailed statement.

In the interim, the board will continue its consultations with other scouting representatives and will take up the matter at its national council meeting in May.

The Boy Scouts touched off fierce lobbying by groups both for and against changing the policy when it said late last month that it was considering removing the national restriction based on sexual orientation and leaving the decision to local chapters.
