GOP rape- abortion bill

war on women gop

Once again, Republicans show America how concerned they are about job creation (And by jobs, Republicans mean abortions aka jobortion), education, health care, civil liberties, foreign affairs, the economy, and the environment.

They’re ba-a-ack, but this time, a Wisconsin state representative responds, and to say her personal story has impact is an understatement:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Wisconsin State Representative Mandy Wright:

This is a story that my constituents don’t know. This is a story that my students don’t know. This is a story that most of my friends don’t know. And that story starts when i was a kid.

I was 8 years old visiting the family farm, and my cousin raped me repeatedly. several times. The only reason it stopped is because my father found us. This has been kept private with my family for good reason. It was not reported.

There’s a reason that only 19% of rapes are ever reported. I was 8. I didn’t know what was happening.

My parents protected me and they made good decisions on my behalf. And I’m a whole person because of the love and care of my parents and my faith community and the counseling that I was able to receive individually and with my family, and that should have been kept private.

But because of this bill, I need to tell this story. because now I have three daughters, and I talked about them on the floor last week and they’re my pride and joy. And they’re beautiful.

And God forbid they have the same thing happen to them that happened to me and they actually be of childbearing age. And now I need to publicly reveal this to the entire community. And let’s make no mistake, I am a state representative. Things that go on the police log do not go undetected.

You are talking about my kids here, that this would have to be made publicly known for them to receive the services that they need.

Rachel:

Wisconsin State Representative Mandy White explaining in some very, very personal terms why she believes it is a terrible idea for the state legislature in Wisconsin to tell Wisconsin’s women that they will not believe you that it was rape if it does not end up in a police report.

And if it does not end up in a police report and you get pregnant, then the decision about what happens next is up to the Republicans in the state legislature, it is not up to you. That is what is happening in Wisconsin. Republicans saying essentially that women lie about being raped in order to get abortions they should not get and so we need to get the police involved in that decision or it didn’t happen.

And now Republicans in Washington are doing the same thing for the whole country.

See how the GOP is reaching out to women? Aren’t they the reachy-outiest ever?

But it is reassuring to see how they’re sticking to their guns about government– especially those run by Republicans– not intruding into our private lives, isn’t it?

Wisconsin Senator Mike Ellis during abortion debate

Wisconsin GOP senators passed an abortion measure requiring transvaginal ultrasounds. Any woman seeking an abortion would be forced to have an unnecessary invasive procedure, just like Virginia GOP Governor Bob “Ultrasound” McDonnell wanted in his state.

Are you sensing a trend?

UPDATE: Walker Will Sign Abortion Ultrasound Bill

Via WiseEye.org:

On June 12, 2013, the Wisconsin State Senate reconvened to finish the vote on Senate Bill 206, relating to requirements to perform abortions, requiring an ultrasound before informed consent for an abortion, and providing a penalty.

In my post “No, no, I’m not really an OB-GYN, but I play one in Congress,” I wrote about how the Wisconsin GOP is also working hard to shut down one of the last abortion clinics in the state.

See how the GOP is reaching out to women? Aren’t they the rebrandiest party ever? In my post I also said this:

It’s hard to overstate what a relief it is to see conservatives insisting that Big Government should stay out of our private lives. Imagine how intrusive pro-choice Democrats would be on women’s medical decisions about their own bodies if small-government Republicans like these weren’t in charge.

Good thing the GOP is keeping liberals in check.

Now take a look at how reachy-outy and small-governmenty they are while “debating” the issue (You can see the full video here):

Nick Nice:

The party of ‘small government’ intrudes upon women’s rights once again. This is not about reducing abortions but about limiting a women’s right to choose. If the GOP wanted to actually reduce abortions then improving Sex Ed & making birth control options more readily available would be a better approach.

This is not how a democracy should function as well. Despicable behavior by Mike Ellis.

Senator Mike Ellis reminded me of someone else with anger and intolerance issues:

abortion congress

Two Think Progress headlines have me pissed off today, and I was already pissed off today. Thanks, Republicans: House Will Vote On Nationwide Abortion Ban Even Though It’s Doomed In The Senate and Wisconsin GOP Is Working Hard To Shut Down One Of The Last Abortion Clinics In The State.

See how the GOP is reaching out to women? Aren’t they the reinventioniest ever?

How reassuring to America that they’re so concerned about jobs (And by jobs, Republicans mean abortions aka jobortion), education, health care, civil liberties, foreign affairs, the economy, and the environment.

Here is one excerpt from TP:

The bill is likely to pass the House, since anti-abortion Republicans hold the majority. But Democrats in the Senate are frustrated about being forced to waste their time on a doomed vote when it comes up in their chamber. The last time a 20-week abortion ban came before Congress, even moderate Republicans complained that they would rather focus their time on other priorities, like creating jobs. This year, lawmakers could spend their efforts working to restore the devastating sequester cuts instead of holding largely symbolic votes on abortion.

TP clearly doesn’t understand that chipping away at abortion rights has become their hobby– because they have so much spare time– and we don’t want to deprive our fellow Americans of something that brings them so much joy, now do we?

Yes. Yes, we do.

Here’s an excerpt from the Wisconsin Intent on Forcing Women to Give Birth post:

Under an anti-abortion measure currently advancing in the Wisconsin legislature, one of the state’s last remaining abortion clinics could soon be forced to close its doors. There are only four abortion clinics left in Wisconsin, three of which are operated by Planned Parenthood. The women’s health organization has confirmed that one of its locations will not be able to comply with the proposed restrictions. [...]

Planned Parenthood’s Nicole Safar explained that the Appleton clinic wouldn’t be able to get admitting privileges quickly enough before the law would take effect.

It’s hard to overstate what a relief it is to see conservatives insisting that Big Government should stay out of our private lives. Imagine how intrusive pro-choice Democrats would be on women’s medical decisions about their own bodies if small-government Republicans like these weren’t in charge.

Good thing the GOP is keeping liberals in check.

jobortion syndrome
Rachel Maddow, April 29, 2013:

tweet maddow jobortion

Rachel Maddow, August 2012:

This is what the Republicans did with their big new majority after the
2010 election. Republicans’ jobs, jobs, jobortion agenda is so fast they`re focusing on the area of legislation so intently that it kind of seems like there should be a monthly newsletter for following this sort of thing.

I repeat, “And by jobs, Republicans mean abortions.

Today Steve Benen at The Maddow Blog is reporting that the people in Washington D.C., the ones who have no voice in Congress, have more of that idiocy to contend with, via The Hill:

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is bringing back a bill to ban most abortions in the District of Columbia after 20 weeks of pregnancy. [...]

It will be opposed by supporters of abortion rights and the D.C. “home rule” movement, which believes Congress should not set policy in the District.

There’s that warm and fuzzy GOP outreach again. I write about that a lot, because the hypocrisy is so astounding.

Benen writes that the Franks bill will “almost certainly not” have a chance of becoming law. But that doesn’t mean that the constant and astounding Republican hypocrisy doesn’t extend to their claims of coveting “small government” as they try to jam their intrusive laws down America’s throats:

[L]et’s call this what it is: a big government proposal in which federal lawmakers want to overrule the judgment of local officials, overriding the wishes of a city because some in Congress feel like it.

Another “jobortion” bill will bite the dust, right alongside what’s left of “Republican credibility.”

pro life after born abortionabortion roe v wade 40th planned parenthood

President Obama:

“[W]hen the people of Mississippi were given a chance to vote on that initiative, they turned it down. And Mississippi is a conservative state.”

“The fact is, after decades of progress, there’s still those who want to turn back the clock.”

“When you read about some of these laws, you want to check the calendar, you want to make sure you’re still living in 2013.”

“When it comes to a woman’s health, no politician should decide what’s best for you.”

“When politicians try to turn Planned Parenthood into a punching bag… When they talk about cutting off funding, let’s be clear, they’re talking about telling many of those women, you’re on your own. They’re talking about shutting those women out at a time when they may need it most.”

“No matter how great the challenge, no matter how fierce the opposition, if there’s one thing the past few years have shown, it’s that Planned Parenthood is not going anywhere.”

There has been a concerted effort recently by conservatives doing what they can to chisel away at or completely ban legal abortion as the War on Women and their reproductive rights continues to take precedence over mundane matters like, you know, jobs.

The other day I posted about KS Gov. Brownback signing a pro-forced birth, personhood law, and even scrawling “JESUS + Mary” on his bill notes.

In fact, we have written post after post about the threats to abortion rights, the right to choose, Planned Parenthood, and women’s rights in general.

Today President Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to address the women’s health organization Planned Parenthood.

Here is the entire speech:

reagan separation of church and state

You know how Republicans love to tout the U.S. Constitution? Oh, I’m sorry, I meant to write, you know how Republicans love to tout certain parts of the U.S. Constitution when it suits them. My bad.

One of those parts that they wave around a lot is the First Amendment (and of course, the Second Amendment, but right now, let’s concentrate on the First). “Freedom of speech!” they tweet me if I dare to use the Twitter “block” option, not realizing that the Constitution refers to government infringement, not my personal blocking rights. Same goes for Comments here at TPC. But I digress…

Many in the GOP seem to ignore basic concepts like, oh I dunno, separation of church and state. Wiki reminds us:

The phrase “separation of church and state” is derived from a letter written by President Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to Baptists from Danbury, Connecticut, and published in a Massachusetts newspaper soon thereafter. In that letter, referencing the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, Jefferson writes:

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”, thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.[15]

Kansas governor Sam Brownback must have let that slip his mind. Or didn’t care. Or something. Think Progress is reporting on how he signed one of the most restrictive anti-abortion, pro-personhood, pro-forced birth laws ever, even requiring doctors to lie to their patients about the disputed theory that abortions lead to cancer.

And then he added his own special LookaMeI’mAChristian touch:

Before Brownback signed HB 2253 into law at a ceremony at the statehouse on Friday, an AP photo reveals that he made a few additions of his own in his notes on the bill. He typed out some phrases — “building a culture of life,” and “all human life is sacred” — that he ended up using in his speech to abortion opponents before approving the legislation, and he also scribbled “JESUS + Mary” at the top of the paper.

Guess what, Governor Sam? Your religion is not necessarily anyone else’s religion. Your Jesus/Mary embellishment is completely inappropriate and should never have been scrawled on a government document. And Jesus and Mary have nothing to do with legislating, let alone a law that eliminates legal reproductive rights of women.

Religious beliefs should not be a foundation for U.S. law. Feel free to practice any faith you choose, but don’t force it unto others. To quote Barry Lynn, ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, a lawyer, and Executive Director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State:

This struggle is really nothing more than an attempt by some religious groups to use the power of the government to impose their dogma about reproduction, sexuality and the beginnings of life.

Invoking those names, or any religious references, are irrelevant and, hey guess what, there are actual living, breathing Christians who are pro-choice:

People of faith support women’s access to contraception, and most religious groups don’t want to overturn Roe v. Wade. In fact, over 75 percent of white Protestants — along with 65 percent of black Protestants and 63 percent of white Catholics — support women’s constitutional right to legal abortion services.

A-f’ing-men.

By the way, GOP, how’s that reachy-outy, makeovery, reinventiony thing workin’ for ya?
