San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Somday, when I have time, I hope to travel through Mexico more extensively than I have heretofore - 2 long trips through Baja California, several short visits to border towns.  One of my destinations on that trip will be San Miguel de Allende, an artists' town.  Here's more about it: San Miguel de Allende. Here are pictures of it on Google Images. I have a friend who took early retirement to live there. Apparently prices are reasonable and 'the livin' is easy'.  Sounds good to me.  ¡Viva Mexico!

Art and Literature (and Europe!) Potpourri on TPC

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Hi, everyone - my name is Lucian Dixon (@lwdgrfx on Twitter) lwdgrfx Lucian Dixonand I am The Political Carnival's web designer.  Neither Paddy nor Laffy are able to post with their regular frequency at the moment, so you'll see posts from me and other guest commenters somewhat more often than usual. My posts will mostly focus on art and literature and/or Europe (though not exclusively).

A quote on art and politics from John Adams, our second US president:

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.

A statue of Sarah Palin by artist J. Taylor Wallace (J. Taylor Wallace / April 18, 2012)

How did I ever miss this one? The tea baggers are not amused:

J. Taylor Wallace brought his ornamental metal "art cooker" - Sarah Palin Tea Parody - to the Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago, Illinois, from the National Ornamental Metal Museum Cooking Extravaganza in Memphis, Tennessee

The Atlantic Cities has some, er, interesting photos as well, plus this:

"I've gotten some really lovely emails, like, 'You suck, and you'll be the next one to burn,'" says Wallace. Here are a few choice selections from the artist's inbox:

It is a matter of time till you are the pig, was it fun for you pig.

Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame by insulting someone. Looks more like a morph of H Clinton and R Maddow, anyway. [...]

"Amid the hate speech, I have also been called 'gay' in what is I presume an attempt to insult me by a particular demographic of individuals," Wallace says.

What fine, loving, Christian, pro-life values.

Sarah Palin, Memorialized with Porn Art

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Frankly, I already find Artsy McMooseFrame a little porny.  Or maybe the word is "obscene". Which ever it is, she should be rated "I", for Idiot:

British artist Jonathan Yeo — who rose to international attention after making a collage of George W. Bush out of clippings of pornography in 2007 — will unveil another series of provocative collages. Among them you'll find Tiger Woods, Sigmund Freud, a wizened image of Sean Connery as James Bond, and the piece de resistance, Sarah Palin, wrapped in a moose head frame, no less. Instead of oil, the former Alaskan governor's face is rendered with images of pubic hair, lace panties, and engorged reproductive organs of both sexes.

How appropriate, considering her questionable ethics have so often challenged the penile code. Oh. Wait. That's penal.

Ohh, now, come on, I knew that. Comedic license.

So how many think Artsy McMooseFrame would be offended by Yeo's work? ::waving hand wildly:: I do! I do!

"They're not insults, per se," Yeo told ARTINFO. "They're just comments on people who trade off their morality and sexuality.

Bingo. He really nailed McMooseFrame (no pun). See? Art really does reflect life.

"I try to make collages that don't look like collages, and I think I'm really kind of painting with the porn," Yeo said. "I don't want to sound pretentious about it, but the process is more like painting in terms of the compositional decisions you make."

Ironically, McMooseFrame has been baring herself to us for years now, and ClusterFoXXX has been pimping her out.  So much for family values.

Overnight Thread- Frank Frazetta, RIP

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

I may not have been totally comfortable with his, ahem, obviously sexist tilt, but what person who has ever read Sci Fi/Fantasy doesn't know and grudgingly admire Mr Frazetta? R.I.P.

Almost forgot, please take this poll-
