Does The Punishment Fit The Crime?

Clay County Jail

Hold onto your seats. Another kerfuffle of justice in... You got it, Florida. What are they putting in the orange juice out there?

If you live in the Sunshine State and your name is Cody Williams, you're not alone. And if you were born in the same year and attended the same high school, chances are you're not the luckiest guy in the world right now.

According to MailOnline:

The case started when a girl from Clay High School in Green Cove Springs claiming to have had sex with a boy named Cody Williams on or around Halloween in 2012.

The victim - who was under 12 but her age has not been disclosed - told investigators what the boy looked like and where he attended school, reported The Florida Times-Union.

Two months later police arrested Cody Lee Williams of Green Cove Springs.

This Cody Lee Williams:

Cody Raymond Williams 1

So, despite his protestations of innocence, off to jail he went --

The police were so confident they had the right guy, they called the victim, told her the assailant had been arrested and she could rest more easily. They'd taken the sexual offender off the streets.

Unfortunately for Cody Lee Williams, the police didn't do their homework nor their obligation of having a line up or showing the victim a picture of the accused. They just held him and refused to investigate any further. Finally Cody Lee's mother prevailed and they held a line-up. The victim told the police that her assailant wasn't in the line-up. They had the wrong guy.

They wanted Cody Raymond Williams, this guy:

Cody Raymond Williams, 2

See any similarity? I don't, but then again, I'm not a trained, experienced cop who should know these things.

Cody Lee Williams case was expunged, however he had already been in jail a total of 35 days. And the correct Cody Williams has since been arrested and charged with the crime. He'lll face court on a sexual assault charge on March 3. But what about the cops who were complicit in the wrongful jailing and inept police work?

An internal investigation found that Hawkins [and three others] failed to properly identify a suspect, failed to properly document information obtained in the investigation, made inaccurate statements in reports and failed to properly document actions taken in an investigation.

This resulted in 35 days of incarceration of a young, impressionable child of 17.  So what's the punishment for the cops?

You'll be surprised to hear that they are being given formal disciplinary letters which will remain in the permanent employment records and they must receive counselling. Oh, and they're awaiting news on possible ten day suspensions. Ten days with pay? Why not 35 without pay, like the victim of their actions caused?

Oh, that's right, it's Florida. Certainly not just a vacation destination -- but the vacation spot from justice.

From the Dep't. of Predictable Headlines: George #Zimmerman arrested. UPDATE: Charged with assault, battery

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

zimmerman trayvon misunderstanding smaller

UPDATE:

UPDATE via a CNN email alert:

Zimmerman was charged Monday with aggravated assault, battery -- domestic violence, and criminal mischief, after an incident at his girlfriend's home, said Dennis Lemma, chief deputy with the sheriff's office.

Hey kids, what time is it?

Why, it's George Zimmerman's in Trouble O'Clock!

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Trayvon Martin killer, Shellie Zimmerman Combative Ex, George "Neighborhood WatchThug" Zimmerman was arrested and on his not so merry way to the Seminole County Jail.

Why? Or should I be asking, "Why this time?" Well, in this latest kerfuffle, nobody's really clear on the details, but Sheriff Don Eslinger confirms the arrest and promises more details are coming:

WESH-Channel 2 reported that Zimmerman was accused of domestic violence by a girlfriend.

The Sheriff's Office, in a short news release, reported that the agency had arrested Zimmerman after being called to a disturbance on Topfield Court in western Seminole County near Apopka.

What?! Georgie was *gasp!* violent (allegedly)?! Who could have imagined such a thing (allegedly)? Anyone think a gun might have been involved (allegedly)? Just wondering, based on previous (alleged) incidents. I mean, it's not like domestic violence is a recurring theme (allegedly) with this fine upstanding paragon of law abiding respect for all, or that has a history of run-ins with the law or anything.

Kidding.

Man arrested for allegedly threatening to behead Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii)

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

he said what 2

The Washington Post has a disturbing report out today about the arrest by the FBI of a man who allegedly threatened to decapitate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii):

“I, Aniruddha Sherbow, with the Divine as my witness, do hereby solemnly vow to find Tulsi Gabbard, wheresoever she may be, and to sever her head from her body,” he wrote, according to local reports. [...]

It’s not Gabbard’s first run-in with Sherbow. In 2011, a judge issued a three-year restraining order against him after a series of threatening and abusive phone calls and text messages to Gabbard, who was then a city councilwoman.

The Hawaii Reporter adds this:

Sherbow, who said he has a philosophy degree and is a professional writer, claimed he is “attempting to achieve the good life for the people.”

“… I really was born into the same obscure Western-Hindu tradition as Tulsi, the Hare Krishna Movement, also known as the Brahma Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya. Because of this last connection, I think she is counting on me not hurting her. And she is right to count on it, because it is in fact very difficult for me to hurt her. However, we all have our limits, and I have reached mine. At this point, if you stuck Tulsi’s head in front of me, I’d have it off in two seconds flat. … I hoped the whole thing might have some good ending somehow, but I’m not seeing one.”

So this is how he is "attempting to achieve the good life" for Rep. Gabbard?

What the hell is happening in this country? (Secret Service pays visit to Maine town official because of racist Facebook post calling for Obama to be shot)

More of Sherbow's mental illness at the link.

VIDEO: GOP Pa. mayor arrested for kidnapping 20-year-old man; gave him alcohol, wanted oral sex, fired gun

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

GOP anonymous cartoon

"My name is Jay, and I am a Republican, a hypocrite, a creep, AND an alcoholic."

"Hi Jay."

Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania Mayor Jay Schiliro is in-- How did Dick Cheney put it again? Oh yeah-- "deep doo-doo."

The party of "family values" strikes again. Via the Delaware County Daily Times:

Arrested last week on charges he abused his position to imprison a 20-year-old Trainer man during a drunken, gun-wielding encounter at his home in February, Marcus Hook Mayor James “Jay” Schiliro has dropped his bid for re-election. But he said Wednesday he plans to finish out his term as mayor. [...]

Authorities allege that late on the evening of Feb. 21, Schiliro contacted the young man by text message and had a police officer deliver him to his borough home. There... the mayor allegedly gave the young man alcohol and produced three firearms, one of which was fired into papers inside the house. During the encounter, the mayor repeatedly asked the young man if he could give him oral sex, according to court documents.

He's being charged with "official oppression, recklessly endangering another person, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and providing alcohol to a minor," all misdemeanors.

Did I mention that Mayor Jay's 13-year-old daughter was asleep upstairs?

He's out on $50,000 bail, as long as he stays away from firearms and of course, any contact with the 20-year-old man whom he plied with drink and with whom he really, really wanted to engage in oral sex. Allegedly.

He once filed an ethics complaint against a Democrat, which is ironic. You know what else is ironic? He's a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. I wonder what he thinks about marriage equality.

And here's one more nugget that just boggles the sane mind:

While caucus meetings are not typically well-attended, Manerchia said there was a standing-room-only crowd, with attendance split between those in support of the mayor staying on and those in favor of his immediate resignation.

“I’d say it was 50-50,” Manerchia said.

I'msorrywhat?

Of course, conservatives are making a big deal out of this because of his affiliation to Mayors Against Illegal Guns. One blogger put it this way: Leftist Hypocrite on Guns Arrested for Having Gun.

As has been reported everywhere, the "leftist" is clearly a Republican. Nice try.

Republican Las Vegas woman arrested after trying to vote twice

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller said that the FBI has arrested a Republican Las Vegas woman, charging that she tried to vote twice in the presidential election.

Roxanne Rubin first voted at an early voting place in Henderson and then, that same day, she tried to vote again at a polling site in Las Vegas. She denied that she'd already voted.

Via CBS Las Vegas:

Rubin was arrested around 4 p.m. at the Riviera hotel-casino, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. She was charged with one felony count of voting more than once in the same election.

It's the Republicans that have tried to suppress the vote in several Republican-run states, and from the reports I've seen, it's Republicans who have been caught committing voter fraud.

Voter I.D. fraud is nearly non-existent, and, of course, the GOP-generated Voter I.D. laws affect mostly Democratic voters.

UPDATED: Couple held at gunpoint by neighbors, arrested. Nobody believed that they were the new owners.

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

Via Souza/White House

Remember this from back in 2009? At the time, President Obama said he hoped that it would be a "teachable moment":

BUMPED AND UPDATED:

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/Ikmxvj) reports the father and son were arrested Monday and charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal trespass. [...]

Authorities say they grabbed semiautomatic rifles and snuck up behind the couple, 61-year-old Jean-Joseph Kalonji and his 57-year-old wife Angelica.

That incident reminded me of what happened to a couple in Georgia (full story and video here). It looks like the president's moment wasn't as teachable as he'd hoped.

Here's how it unteachably unfolded: A couple had just closed escrow on a foreclosed home and were told by their real estate agent that they should swing by and change the locks.

When a neighbor saw them, “He say to put the hands up and get out from the house, otherwise he would shoot us,” according to the husband.

The neighbors didn’t believe that the couple owned the house, so they called the sheriff, who locked them up.

Did I mention that the new owners were African American?

That's right, the man and wife were arrested, charged with loitering and prowling, and forced to spend the night in jail. For trying to work on their own house. That they owned. That was theirs. That they bought.

Perhaps another Beer Summit is in order.
