Poll- President Obama’s Approval Untouched By “Scandals”

in-your-face

Mmmm, the R’s are scratching their heads and thinking about ratcheting it up to 11 over this. Bring. It. On.

Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama comes out of what was arguably the worst week of his presidency with his approval rating holding steady, according to a new national poll.

But a CNN/ORC International survey released Sunday morning also indicates that congressional Republicans are not overplaying their hand when it comes to their reaction to the three controversies that have consumed the nation’s capital over the past week and a half. And the poll finds that a majority of Americans take all three issues seriously.

According to the survey, which was conducted Friday and Saturday, 53% of Americans say they approve of the job the president is doing, with 45% saying they disapprove. The president’s approval rating was at 51% in CNN’s last poll, which was conducted in early April.

“That two-point difference is well within the poll’s sampling error, so it is a mistake to characterize it as a gain for the president,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Nonetheless, an approval rating that has not dropped and remains over 50% will probably be taken as good news by Democrats after the events of the last week.”

Gallup- Americans Wanted Gun Background Checks to Pass Senate

no-brainer

Toomey’s approval improved with his support of the shot down law. Guess the rest of congress is just plain stupid.

PRINCETON, NJ – Sixty-five percent of Americans say the U.S. Senate should have passed the measure that would have expanded background checks for gun purchases, while 29% agree with the Senate’s failure to pass the measure.

These data are from Gallup Daily tracking conducted April 22-25, about a week after the Senate’s April 17 vote on the background check measure, which failed when 54 senators voted “yea,” short of the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster and pass the measure.

Prior to the Senate’s failure to pass the measure, numerous polls showed that roughly nine in 10 Americans favor expanded gun background checks in concept — a fact that a number of journalists, columnists, and politicians made note of. Gallup’s Jan. 19-20 survey, for example, showed that 91% of Americans said they personally would vote for a measure requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales. Gallup asked this question again in the April 22-25 survey and found a slight decline, to 83% support. The wording of the new question was slightly modified from the January asking, which may be responsible for some of the change. But it also may be that the Senate’s failure to pass the measure deflated Americans’ support for it.

Quickie- Gun Vote Boosts Toomey’s Approval In Pennsylvania

thumbsup1

Sometimes when you do the right thing, you are rewarded.

The U.S. Senate vote to reject background checks for people buying guns online or at gun shows leaves 34 percent of voters “angry,” while 36 percent are “dissatisfied.” Only 5 percent are “enthusiastic,” with 22 percent “satisfied.”

Pennsylvania voters approve 34 – 29 percent of the way U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey is handling gun control and give Sen. Toomey an overall 48 – 30 percent approval rating, his highest ever. By a 54 – 12 percent margin, voters think more favorably of Toomey because of his co-sponsorship of legislation to require expanded background checks.

Gallup- Americans Widely Back Government Job Creation Proposals

gallupjobs

Another clue that we should be pushing harder on the job creation idea, starting with infrastructure. Do it NOW Dems!

PRINCETON, NJ — Americans widely support each of three job creation proposals, including offering tax breaks to businesses that create jobs in the U.S. and a program that would put people to work on urgent infrastructure repair projects. Support for these programs is only slightly lower in a variant of the question that asks respondents if they are in favor of spending government money to pay for the programs.

The data are based on Gallup polling from March 2-3 and March 4-5. The job creation items were included with other policy proposals in a Gallup issue referendum, asking respondents if they would vote “for” or “against” the proposal in a hypothetical vote on the issue. The items asked March 2-3 did not mention the need for government spending on these programs but the March 4-5 items did. The explicit mention of government spending reduced support for the programs by three to five percentage points. This suggests Americans’ support for job creation outweighs concerns they may have about government spending.

2012 Number Crunching

This year, the 112th US Congress has had an approval rating in single digits.  Dumping toxic nuclear waste in your backyard had higher positive numbers.  So I thought it would be interesting to get a better idea of why the public has a more affirmative opinion on something that will positively kill you than on its guardians and leaders, elected to protect you.

So let’s look at Congress as a whole and some statistics.

Members:  Representatives: 435

               Senators:        100

               Total:           535

Annual Salary:

          Speaker: (1)                  $223,500.

          Leaders: (4)                       $193,400.

          Members: (530)                $174,000.

     Total Congressional cost:             $93,217,100.

Congressional working breakdown for 2012:

Days in session:                             145

Average hours/day:                                  4

Total Hrs. in session:                       580

Ave. Days absent:                             25

Ave. hours attended                          480

Ave. pay/Hrs. attended: individual       $362.50/hr.

Ave. cost/hr congressional session       $194,202.25/hr.

(above does NOT incl. per diem/benefits)

Federal Minimum Wage     :                   $7.25(no benefits)

2011 Median US household earnings:           $29,451.

(Roughly 2 weeks Congressional pay)

2012 Total Bills passed:           210

Congressional cost/bill passed:   $443,890.10

(NOT including staff)

Bills read entirely by representatives:  Average: 4 or 2%

So the next time you consider Congress, consider this:  At best it’s a part-time job and like most part-time jobs in the real world, you would be earning minimum wage or slightly higher.

We’re being fleeced and it’s about time we start letting our 8% job approval employees know that we’re going to be demanding meaningful actions and hearings in 2013 and voting again in 2014. Record mid-term election numbers are predicted and it’ll be to turn out their sorry asses. Incumbents beware.

Let Congress hear us roar. It won’t be easy for them to find cushy part-time gigs like they have now out in the private sector.  We know.

Maybe they need to worry less about being “primaried” next election and spend more time thinking about what’s right for all of us now, not just the 2%. Health care.  Gun Control. Rights over our bodies. Collective bargaining rights. Judicial appointments. Cabinet replacements. Planned Parenthood. Fiscal Budgets. Taxes. Hell, there’s plenty for them to do if they’d get off their sorry asses – maybe even enough to make these congressional positions full-time jobs.  Put in some real hours. Read the damned bills they sign.

If not they better start worrying about being run out of town on a rail.  There will be plenty of us volunteers to be the engineer on that train.  DG

Poll-itics: U.S. Satisfaction Up to 30%, Highest in Three Years

Via Gallup, where there are more details and another graph. Slowly but surely, things are looking up:

Democrats are driving the rise in satisfaction this year, not surprising given that an incumbent Democratic president is seeking re-election. The Sept. 6-9 Gallup poll, conducted the final day of the Democratic National Convention and the first three days after it, shows satisfaction among Democrats surpassing the majority level. A small fraction of Republicans, 7%, say they are satisfied, as do 25% of independents.

The September update marks the first time satisfaction has surpassed 50% among any party subgroup since August 2009, when a majority of Democrats were also satisfied.
