Mo' Ne Davis, Born To Pitch a Sacred Hardball or Softball and Hear "3 Strikes!"

This is one remarkable high school student with a hell of an arm and dedication to the coaches who, in turn, rarely get to steward or walk along side of.

Ms. Mo'ne Davis, first young woman ever to make the cover of Sports Illustrated in a couple of categories.

From MSNBC and I'm going to leave it lie but for a couple of excerpted passages. They took time off from 'theatre' and Grandiose Aspects of the Optics. The ever-loving Optics.

Here's a smackerel of details about the youngest star at the mound for some time, from the marvelous Mother Jones.

Davis, who pitches for South Philadelphia's Taney Dragons, received national attention last week when she threw a two-hit shutout and struck out eight in the Dragons' Little League World Series opening victory over Nashville, Tennessee. On Sunday she became the sixth girl to get a hit in the LLWS, a first-inning RBI singlethat helped Philadelphia to a 7-6 win over Pearland, Texas.

And the 5-foot-4 right-hander's fastball, clocked at 71 mph, is roughly equivalent to a 93 mph pitch thrown on a big-league-size field.

As Albert Chen writes in the Sports Illustrated story, "She's a lot of things to a lot of different people, all of them good things: a totem for inner-city baseball, a role model for your 10-year-old niece, a role model for your 10-year-old nephew. Most of all, she's a laid-back kid just having a really good time." NBA superstar Kevin Durant was just one of a number of pro athletes to tweet their support: "This youngster is striking everyone out and she is a girl. I love it."

You go Mo'Ne! CBS has rockin' footage of her talent:

Hit Me With Your Best Shot - on ice, please, and lots of ice

Vertical dunking on the rocks? Genius.

The trend moving to all corners of the country (and overseas), of getting dunked and with a very large bucket of ice water (hope they at least add a lime wedge) is full-blown viral.

Even Grandma Ethel Kennedy  took it like a sailor. AND she also challenged President Obama.

Still giving back, Dame Ethel.

pippin

The viral trend has drawn celebrities, athletes, and politicians, including the Kennedys, to participate in the #IceBucketChallenge. And they spared no one — after thirty or so members of the Kennedy family poured freezing water over their heads, they nominated "Grandma Ethel," one of the eldest in the family, to follow suit. She did — but not before she named President Obama to be next.

Next, QEII? Bet she'd still have her ubiquitous purse. Doncha' sometimes wildly wonderwhat the Queen has in her trademark hand bag?

For the record, ALS is Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It’s a disease of the nerve cells in both the brain and the spinal chord that control voluntary muscle movement. Over time, it weakens your muscles and your ability to voluntarily control your muscles, killing you. ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Here is the website to donate to the ALS Association: ALSA.org. And here is another website, made by the family of Peter Frates who was recently diagnosed with ALS; they are heavy proponents of “striking out ALS” and the ice bucket challenge: www.petefrates.com.

gunscar2

Here's the history, ably summarized by The Verge.

WHAT'S GOING ON?
Everyone you've seen is participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge involves daring a person to dump a bucket of ice water over their head within the next 24 hours, or else donate money — usually $100 — toward fighting ALS. Even if a person completes the challenge, they're more than welcome to donate money too.

Once a person completes the challenge, they're also supposed to dare several other people — usually three — to participate, which is why the challenge has been growing and growing.

This Hawaiian footage of flash-mob dumps/observers, below, is priceless.

Now that's funny right there, no matter how you judge the cause.

A Woman's View of Serial Genital Mutilation in Iraq (and everywhere else)

Share

WARNING: graphic and troubling graphics below, please check your environment. Thank You.

weaponsofmysogny

Years ago, Kathy Griffin (a rather political comic with a strong voice) spoke of her having gone to Iraq during active U.S. conflict - the last time - that was absolutely in terrible taste but is something I've not forgotten in the interim - she achieved her point.

She had some sentimental moments (for Kathy) with our troops, then got into some dialogue later about one of the things that burned her as a woman: genital mutilation in the region, escalating every year and mega-egregiously offensive to women around the globe. Now ISIS is back in the mix, and Griffin's bit becomes that much more relevant.

glennbeck_settlingscores

She essentially described an overview of what was being done to woman and girls in shocking numbers, and it isn't pretty. Griffith got halfway through the train of thought before she dropped a term I'll always remember, "big bucket of clits". It was in the context of things she found hardest to accept, like Sharia Law and the fact that a high percentage of females lining up to have their clitorises sliced off and discarded.

Here's a bit more information from Unicef.

It's beyond heartbreaking this misogynist balderdash, we passed into torture a while ago … it is rumored and reported that Egypt manages to mutilate the genitals of nearly 95% of women. Many are done near birth, like a bris gone bad.

ISISTroubling

ISIS has brought all of this horror back to the front page. The tribal custom is old and has deep religious roots … this isn't just a punishment of mild chastising like we give date-rapers in our own country. It's a global ethics crisis.

Here are some words from activist women and victims themselves about this horrific practice.

War brings more need for wealth, arms and whatever strategies will work to keep the people down, help the regular poor and abused and violated girls and women, and historically defined as 'always' a bi-product of war: violence against women. Take your pick of countries to highlight, but at the moment Northern Iraq is in the spotlight.

I can't look at these hideous images without tearing up - but I think they need to be seen. Those poor girls are simply born the wrong sex to be valued in the MidEast and other oppressive regions, the War On Women is GLOBAL.

From Alarabiya.net.

The al-Qaeda-Inspired Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has ordered all girls and women between the ages of 11 and 46 in and around Iraq's northern city of Mosul to undergo female genital mutilation, the United Nations said on Thursday.

“It is a fatwa (or religious edict) of ISIS, we learnt this this morning,” said Jacqueline Badcock, the number two U.N. official in Iraq.

The “fatwa” would potentially affect 4 million women and girls, Badcock told reporters in Geneva by videolink from Arbil.

“This is something very new for Iraq, particularly in this area, and is of grave concern and does need to be addressed,” she said, according to Reuters.

WHY? Indeed. Don't see Jesus or Allah signing off on this one.

The GOP: belly-aching, bloviatin', bitchin' an' a' hatin' = #NoTeaForYou

Share

hatePBO

The Right does little but belly-ache and b i t c h about the current Administration and his Pinko Commie, Arugula Munching Lacker of Feck, related non-deserved and hatin' hatin' hatin' on him for being audacious enough to accept being a Nobel Peace Prize winner, Head Satan of Obamacare, Perpetrator o Impeachable Offenses and Unpresident-like.

And they have ruined tea for many a liberal, Independent (we still have those, right?) and common sense voter.

This is excruciatingly embarrassing, even for the Grand Old Party of Tea. Spite evolved to a powerful lotta' hate fer' the spurious, specious even for the Regressive Right and utter Bizarro World Orwellian (h/t to Lucian) … and the marked Dovish Lack of Cajones for passing on the whole GOP (newest)Gun Fondling craze.

stilladick

#NoTeaForYou … the Do Nothings have made Inactivity the norm, the status quo for as far the eye can see. The GOP was far more tolerant, thoughtful and intelligent in days of yore.

I'm a life-long tea drinker, great-grand-exponentially-mothered, and my corpus hasn't enjoyed the cafè in twenty years so it's even more of a a kick in the old scones. I've not bought Lipton since I started referring to the Tea People as the Lipton Brigadiers. (And that's perfectly fine for iced tea if you add to it or for the odd nut who wants de-caf-wtf. At dawn.

I fear our prime years as bloggers and those who read our scribblings and comment/expand the grass roots enthusiasm and numbers for us. In other words, The Teatonic Era, Doris Kerns Goodwin's granddaughters will analyze it from a woman's P.O.V. Hope she has a Bean clamming outfit and a hose-sprayered gallon or two of our Method™ Troll Spray.

thanks, obama

I'll just leave a short quote and some relevant idiot footage here, see you on the other side. Happy Monday Monday.

In an op-ed published Wednesday by the New York Times, columnist Charles M. Blow destroyed the recent assertion by Republican Congressman Mo Brooks that Democrats and President Obama are waging a war against white people. During an appearance on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham’s show on Monday, Brooks claimed that the Democratic Party is using a strategy to divide everyone by race and show that “whites hate everybody else.” After Ingraham had played a clip from Ron Fournier of the National Journal saying that the GOP has a real problem with Hispanics and that it is becoming the party of white people, Brooks made the following comments:

“This is a part of the war on whites that’s being launched by the Democratic Party. And the way in which they’re launching this war is by claiming that whites hate everybody else. It’s part of the strategy that Barack Obama implemented in 2008, continued in 2012, where he divides us all on race, on sex, greed, envy, class warfare, all those kinds of things.”

Balderdash. [Re Ingraham. How in holy hades did Olbermann stand dating her more than one time, and presumably, they had conversations? That was leaning forward a slosh too far.

For some audio footage that might best be heard by helping yourself to a sedative of your choice in the TPC walk-in med closet, here 'ya go. From Right Wing Watch via Politics USA.

Obama gets shite if he sends troops anywhere other than American bases, from both right and the deeply pacifist (yay for us) Dems and Independents. The artwork below I found spot on, though I feel Boehner is perhaps more of a fiddle fellow.

The Morning Schmoe Roundtable had their antlers up.

If you look closely you can just spot the tear of lament on Bo(eh)ner's patriotic to the max face.
