I've always adored children, teens, and twentysomethings. This video exemplifies exactly why I loved teaching so much, why I admire Erin Faith Page more than I can put into words, and why I do not admire the "honored keynote speaker" Sen. Kelly Ayotte in the least, nor the way she personifies the hypocrisy of that Very Serious Outreach Effort (scroll) by the GOP:

Below is a link to the petition we have made... sign it, share it, and stand with me for equality on every level. Contact me if you would like more information or would like to get involved in any way!

"Bringing someone who is racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, or openly discriminatory goes against everything that we are taught here at NEC."

"I will not keep quiet on such an important and personal issue."

"There are times when I didn't want to wake up."

"I hated school. Not because I was dumb, but because I had never been surrounded by a community that believed in me."

"May 18th will be the second most important day in my life... I get to look into the crowd knowing that in this moment, I am stronger than I ever thought possible."

"I am confident because I finally believe in myself."

"Because of my experiences at New England College, I was in absolute shock when the news of Senator Kelly Ayotte being our keynote speaker and recipient of an honorary degree was released. I cannot believe that they would choose someone who was the exact opposite of what I believe our school exemplifies."

"Why would we align our name with someone who has no interest in true social justice? Senator Kelly Ayotte is an avid anti-gay marriage, anti-same-sex adoption, and anti-choice senator... She has worked hard to create a state where myself and others are not seen through the same lens, and are not worthy of equal treatment under our laws."

"...I've learned how to tell people like her... that they are wrong."

"This protest is not about Republicans or Democrats. This is about standing up for human rights."

"I want every person on this planet to know that they are worth something. I want the suicides of our LGBT youth to end. I want sexism to be a story of the past, and I want us all to be equal under our law."

Via Miscellany: Blue:

Erin Faith Page, a 24-year-old self-identified lesbian, will be the student commencement speaker next week at New England College. She made this video to protest the selection of Sen. Kelly Ayotte to give the keynote address at the graduation ceremony.

Sally, it's not a preference, it's an orientation. Nobody "chooses" to be gay.

  • Sally

Sexual preference is a civil rights issue because gay people in this country are discriminated against. When that stops, so will the issue. However, since women fought for elusive civil rights 60 years ago, and are now having to fight the same battles again, I'm guessing the "Christian conservatives" will never agree that all people are created by God and have 'inalienable rights' in this nation.

If the majority of the American youth are like this girl America will get better

You keep using words and phrases. None of them mean what you seem to think they do. Return forthwith to a place of higher learning. If you've already been to one, get your money back.

  • Cthulhu0818

You owe me a screen cleaning.

  • Cthulhu0818

    Brava!

  • Cosmic_Surfer

Not a civil rights issue? Educate the populace then - what is it? By the by - nice irrational deflection...let me guess - a post Reagan era education?

    "Someone's.

    *Blah people.

  • http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/ GottaLaff

    1. GottaLaff is capitalized. Hypocrisy isn't.

    2. Someone's, not some ones

    3. No, you're not preaching to the choir, quite the opposite. Look up the definition of that phrase along with "diversity".. Also look up punctuation use and spelling.

    4. It isn't a "sexual preference." People do not "prefer" to be attracted to one sex or another. They're born that way. Your ignorance is showing, once again.

    5. From Merriam Webster:

    Definition of DIVERSITY

1 : the condition of having or being composed of differing elements : variety; especially : the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization

2: an instance of being composed of differing elements or qualities : an instance of being diverse

Synonyms: assortment, diverseness, variety, heterogeneity, heterogeneousness, manifoldness, miscellaneousness, multifariousness, multiplicity, variousness

There is nothing in there about "accepting all viewpoints." Acceptance and diversity are not synonymous.

6: Bill Clinton never raped anyone. Nice try.

    7. Not only can't you spell, you can't read. You failed to adhere to our guidelines in so many ways that you have earned yourself a ban. You are no more than an even more inferior, less educated Fox talking point, yet you are pretty funny. No, strike that. Laughable.

(I can't seem to get rid of some computer code that sneaked in here, sorry)

This is not a civil rights issue. Sorry folks. Blacks have an issue with this being compared to their struggles. Would you all have an issue if Bill Clinton came to speak since he is well known rapist? The answer is No. That is why you are all Hypocrites (caps just for you gottalaff)

  • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

    I are smart tue.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jim.jones.52090 Jim Jones

Do you have a problem with Bill Clinton who rapes women speak at a college? Or is that OK. This the Hypocrisy I speak of. No one protests that. Oh ya... I forgot diversity

  • http://www.facebook.com/jim.jones.52090 Jim Jones

I do understand the word. I suggest you look it up. Although I suspect you have your own definition to fit your situation. I'm preaching to the choir on this page I know. I have yet to hear your definition of Diversity (caps for you gottalaff) . Since when is some ones sexual preference a civil rights issue? Ask a Black person if they feel the same way.

Erin, your family must be incredibly proud of the wonderful young woman you've become and so excited for you as you embark on your journey into the big bad world. Your desire and commitment to humanity is clear and to be admired. Hold tight to those ideals, when things get tough. You are exactly the reason I know my grandchildren will be growing up in a better world. faber est quisque fortunae suae.

I Have No Idea what you could Possibly be Talking About.

  • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker

She sounds like a strong young lady and wish I could be there to hear her speech.
My bet is that Erin's speech will be better received than that of the bigoted homophobe who continues to lie about her vote on background checks.

Capitalizing Various Words Is Annoying, Don't You Think?

  • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

    Gesundheit Threemo!

  • http://twitter.com/francie57 Frances R

    Amen.

  • http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/ GottaLaff

Thank you. And Anomaly is right... Diversity does not mean that at all. Jim doesn't seem to understand the word diversity, which also shouldn't be capitalized.

  • http://twitter.com/42bkdodgr Charles F

    Excellent response Laffy

  • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

Diversity does not mean we have to "accept all view points."

  • http://twitter.com/francie57 Frances R

So proud of this young woman! Erin Page has a bright future! Congratulations and all the best!

  • http://thepoliticalcarnival.net/ GottaLaff

Hardly. Accepting bigotry, exclusion, and hatred isn't accepting a "view point." And hypocrite isn't capitalized.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jim.jones.52090 Jim Jones

Erin, Diversity means that you accept all view points. You're a Hypocrite.

  • Whitney Robinson

Thank you. Very much. All the best to you.
