WI GOP Senator thinks Kwanzaa is a fake, fraudulent observance that “almost no black people today care about." (VIDEO ADDED)

Kwanzaa has been around since 1966, is celebrated by 18 million African-Americans every year, and is a non-religious holiday that runs from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1. It is not intended to replace Christmas, It was created by a Black Studies professor to honor the values of ancient African cultures via seven different principles that are believed to have been key to building strong, productive families and communities in Africa.

WI GOP Senator Glenn Grothman, head of the state Republican party, the guy who thought Voter I.D. would help Mitt Romney in a close race, who believes nonmarital parenthood is a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect, who angered one of our readers here, and who has unabashedly insulted Wisconsin voters, has revived our abhorrence of him once again.

How? And how are these two things related?

Via the Cap Times:

Sen. Glenn Grothman’s denounced the holiday in a press release Friday,  calling the African-American cultural observance fake, fraudulent and one that “almost no black people today care about … just white left-wingers who try to shove this down black people’s throats in an effort to divide America.” [...]

[T]his is the second time [Wisconsin Governor Scott] Walker has been called on by state Democratic leaders to denounce what are arguably over-the-top comments by fellow members of the GOP.

Grothman also warned parents to “be on the lookout if a K-12 or college teacher tries to tell your children or grandchildren (that Kwanzaa) is a real holiday.” He claimed that “irresponsible” public schools "try to tell a new generation that blacks have a separate holiday than Christians.”

If all that doesn't help improve the GOP's relationship with African Americans, nothing will.

Your move, Scott Walker.

UPDATE, with a big h/t to whose post you should read here:

  • Shouldn't legislatures be legislating and not concerning themselves with cultural issues, that are of no concern and celebrate the diversity of our nation.

  • The Republican party is rapidly becoming the spawning grounds for abject ignorance. So many legislators who cannot speak beyond an 8th grade level are finding their way into government. Wake up Wisconsin, you're embarrassing the Nation.

  • As an African American, I can't express just how GRATIFIED I am that Grothman is so concerned about the interests of myself and others in the African American community . . .

As usual, people like Grothman push their beliefs and opinions and want them to be accepted as documented facts when they're not.  Give the man a test on Kwanzaa and see how much he knows about the holiday.
