The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.

Here is their statement on the Newtown massacre, via the Wall Street Journal, and every other news source on Twitter... way after the fact:

NRA STATEMENT

The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.

Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.

The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

Meaningful contributions. As in no more lobbying for gun manufacturers? Cutting ALEC ties that reveal extensive lobbying behind U.S. gun laws?

The powerful lobbying organization has long pressured lawmakers to maintain easy access to firearms in the United States, prompting many to say the NRA is standing in the way of reform. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the NRA has spent more than $2.2 million lobbying Congress this year alone. By comparison, the gun control lobby spent just $180,000.
