I am well-versed on the topic of comedy. I performed it on stage, on TV, at special events, I taught it, directed it, and wrote it. One of the most fundamental rules of comedy is that it (obviously) has to be funny. If someone isn't laughing, if someone is offended, if someone wants to haul off and slug you after you tell a tasteless joke, then chances are it's (obviously) not funny.
However, it seems that Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County GOP Chair and Romney supporter Jim Roddey thinks it's a real knee-slapper to refer to Obama supporters as "mentally retarded." Acting as MC, he did just that in front of a crowd of about 200 Republicans an election night party.
Note to Roddey: That's not in the least bit funny, and is both tasteless and offensive. Trust me.
Via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, here's what he thought was so hilarious:
"There was a disappointment tonight. I was very embarrassed. I was in this parking lot and there was a man looking for a space to park, and I found a space for him. And I felt badly -- he looked like he was sort of in distress. And I said, 'Sir, here's a place.' And he said, 'That's a handicapped space.' I said, 'Oh I'm so sorry, I saw that Obama sticker and I thought you were mentally retarded."
Even worse, the audience gave him a rousing response, so I'm going to take a wild guess and say that none of them considered themselves to be "mentally retarded." I would describe every one of them as socially inept, detestable, obnoxious, vile, insensitive asses.
But not the least bit funny.
