The GOP is very concerned. It’s finally hitting them that their endlessly long presidential primary is not producing the best results. Those clever Republicans, nothing gets by them!
So now they’re having meetings about it, arguing, and hand-wringing, and fretting that their little Religious War on Women Marathon has ended up benefiting President Obama. What a shame.
Many acknowledge privately that they worry a long primary is forcing all of the GOP candidates to spend more than they want and that the candidates’ negative attacks against each other are hurting the eventual nominee’s chances against President Obama. [...]
The two goals were to keep the primary season out of the holidays, and to prolong the system so less-known candidates would have more of a chance and more states would play a role in the nomination. [...]
Most observers still predict that the primary will be all but over by late April and say that would give the nominee plenty of time to raise money and prepare for the general election. But they all said that if the primary dragged into the summer it could hurt the eventual nominee, and that a brokered convention would be a disaster for the party.
Psst! GOP! The party is already a disaster.
