VIDEO: Facts are facts, but we all make mistakes, even the best of us

Here at TPC we always try our best to write up stories as accurately as possible, bring you the facts, along with commentary, but there are times when we screw up. We regret those times, and try to set the record straight as soon as possible. But there are going to be those inevitable awkward posts in which we mess up.

The other day, we posted the very same poll that Rachel Maddow refers to in this video. We corrected it when a Commenter pointed out the error, but then we noticed that Rachel, Ed Schultz, Political Wire, Steve Benen, and others were using the same poll well after we pointed out our mistake.

Because all of those heavyweights referenced the same CBS page, I kept checking back, thinking that our link would magically lead to this year’s results, and did an extensive search trying to find a current CBS poll, but without success.

Even though we did put up the wrong information (and made the correction), it was somehow comforting to see that so many of our favorites made the same goof. Hey, we’re only human.

“…part of Obama’s claim is correct: Our dependence on foreign oil is below 50 percent.

But fully evaluating the accuracy of the claim also means looking at the context in which it is made.

Obama clearly claims credit in the commercial; and his own source for the claim makes clear that a number of factors, including the poor economy and gains from drilling — which began before his administration — are among them.

These are important details. Without them, the claim in the ad — made specifically to boast of Obama’s accomplishments — lacks context. And when factually accurate claims leave out such important context, the Truth-O-Meter’s dial turns to Half True.” – politifact
Is that really so wrong ?

I understand that; it’s why I choose YOU as a source.  You actually care to get it right.

    What a concept!

Thanks! But I personally hate it when I’ve discovered a goof. I try to fix asap, but feel awful every time.
