Michigan City Turns Down Millions of Dollars, Saying Federal Money Is Not Free

Jeff's father lived in Troy for many years, it's just a dinky bedroom town outside of Detroit, I can't even fathom the concept of refusing money, especially for transportation.

In what could be a new high water mark of anti-Washington sentiment, the city of Troy, Mich., is rejecting a long-planned transportation center whose construction would have been fully financed with federal stimulus money.

The terminal, which would help Troy become a transportation node on an upgraded Detroit-to-Chicago Amtrak line, was hailed by supporters as a way to create jobs and to spur economic development. But federal money is federal money, so with the urging of the new mayor, who helped found the local Tea Party chapter, the City Council cast a 4-to-3 vote this week against granting a crucial contract, sending the project into limbo.

“There’s nothing free about government money,” Mayor Janice Daniels said in an interview. “It’s never free, and it’s crippling our way of life.”

Well, I guess that makes since it's a core principle of tea baggers to save money, oh wait, whatsthatyousay?

Yet if the money does not go to Troy, it will not be used to pay down the national debt; it will be redirected to other projects around the country.

So this doorknob Daniels, already under fire for being a bigoted idiot, just let millions of dollars that would have unequivocally improved the city she is in charge of just go away. I smell a recall in the making.

Troy is a fairly wealthy, predominately white suburban community.

    So, no.

This mayor's actions are a clear example of what my dearly departed parents and grandparents called, "biting off one's nose to spite one's face."  It continues to amuse me how many tea partiers want to hold positions in government while saying that they hate the government.  There's no way I'd be caught associating myself with someone/thing I really and truly hated.  I taught high school in GA for 33 years until 2009, and there were some members of the faculty that made me wonder why they chose teaching as a profession because they were as mean as snakes to their students.  It might be explained by the fact that the majority of these teachers considered themselves to be "conservatives."

The GOP has been fighting against passenger rail, public education, teaching evolution and the Postal Service actually serving citizens as long as I can remember. This isn't a new thing that started with the Tea Party. If you're a "hereditary Democrat", ask your parents and grandparents about the Eisenhower days, for example.

Is Troy part of the "emergency manager" disaster?

Where does she think that evil 'federal money' originates? On a tree somewhere? No, Mayor, that moeny is money that your citizens, the rest of Michiganders, and Americans sent to DC to be used for projexys just like this! You, honey, are a moron, and I feel bad for the unemployed in your area, and for those of us who would love to have AMTRAK updated to enable us to visit your town and spend money there. Short-sighted fools have all joined the Teas...for tears.
