That “truce”? Boehner has made it clear it’s over now.

People were gunned down in Arizona, families and friends were devastated, the nation was traumatized, it is trying to heal, and the political parties declared a “truce” of sorts. They made an attempt at civility, seemed to reach out a little more than usual, and actually gave the impression that what happened mattered.

It was great while it lasted.

Now, thanks to The Boehner, those were the good old days, and “destroy” is the new “kill”:

“President Obama and Congressional Democrats have been on a job-destroying spending spree that has left us with nothing but historic unemployment and the most debt in U.S. history. If they want us to help pay their bills, they are going to have to start cutting up their credit cards.”

Back to the same old partisan battles. Peace and respect were apparently on a time clock. Euphemisms rule the day.

And no, I was expecting nothing different, nor am I surprised.  But thanks to Boehner, I just got the green light to release my newest BLUNT video earlier than expected.

I don’t speak for our Commenters. I was responding to a specific comment you made. Thanks.

Did you notice that I put quotes around the word also, in the post on my site? But what about some of these other commenters on your site? They don’t seem to be in favor of the idea of civility at all, do they?

Did you see the quotes around the word “truce”?

You’re right that you didn’t call him uncivil, even though we might agree that Boehner probably could be more civil. What you said was that he was ending a truce. I’m not sure there ever was a truce, or that there should be a truce in politics. What there should be a more of a fair fight, and a little more respect for one another’s viewpoints, even if we disagree with each other.

I would also agree that the title of the repeal bill is provocative, but no matter what they called it, I think that introducing a repeal bill, without having a well-thought out alternative to propose, is inherently provocative. Boehner knows repeal is not going anywhere, but he is compelled to go ahead with the repeal bill in deference to his constituents. He probably thinks that calling his bill the repeal of the job-killing health case bill is probably about the most positive spin he can put on what he has to do.

I don’t believe I said he was uncivil. I said he opened the door to divisive
politics again. Using a euphemism for “kill” was not quite a bandaid. It
would have been a real step forward if they’d changed the name of the bill,
but the GOP insisted on provocation one more time.

I don’t agree with Boehner, especially when he keeps using the phrase “jobs-destroying” without being about to back it up with any evidence, but I’m not sure I would accuse him of ending the attempt at civility. If we are going to try to usher in an era of more civility, that does not mean we will not disagree. It does not even mean that we will not attack each other’s positions passionately. What civility should mean is that we are going to try not to call each other names. We should try not to demonize the other sie. We should try to listen to one another and find common ground if possible. And we should tell the truth.
