In a previous post, I quoted Rachel Maddow (see post and video here) saying the following:
“Negrophobia… It’s about making white people feel like they are victims of black people.”
“This isn’t about racism… This is a story about political outcomes… Targeting white people… This is political strategy… [by] political activists… They are pros at this… There’s no reason to expect them to stop doing stuff like this … unless this stops working.”
And one of the messages sent is tacit approval of blatant hostility toward President Obama, because he's "not one of us." He's "them" and white people are "us."
And one very scary consequence of condoning that kind of implicit discrimination is hatred, which in turn opens the door to nightmare scenarios like this:
The arrest of former New York City cop Michael Stephen Bowden for telling a Secret Service agent he'd like to put President Obama up against a wall and shoot him underscores the daily threat matrix for a job that is much more dangerous than, say, the harrowing experience of Bering Sea fishermen as dramatized on the popular TV show "The Deadliest Catch." [...]
The Secret Service has been particularly busy chasing down threats to Mr. Obama, who faced a barrage of death threats and at least one credible assassination plot while a presidential candidate and since taking office in January 2009. [...]
According to the law, "Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States ... shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."
Bowden, who is white, said the following:
"If I had the opportunity, I would shoot [Obama] myself. If I had the opportunity to get Obama against the wall and shoot him, I would." A small arsenal of loaded weaponry was found in Bowden's South Carolina home.
I guess that's what "Second Amendment remedy" means, right Sharron Angle?
When I get questions about why I post about Twitter and Facebook threats here at TPC, I always respond that it is for two reasons: One, to expose these sickos so that we can identify and attempt to stop them; and two, to document the threat for the Secret Service.
The Secret Service has expressed their appreciation to me more than once (in particular, for grabbing a screen shot of a site they couldn't access), and the Twitterverse has managed to get accounts shut down.
It's not much, but at least it's something. There are a lot of unstable, angry, violent people out there who just need that one little push to cross the line. Our job is to push back when we can, however we can.
