We have a long way to go in this country when it comes to racism and bigotry.
As we speak, the so-called “ground zero” (not) “mosque” (not) controversy (ginned up) is monopolizing the air waves. Americans are equating all Muslims with terrorists. Conservatives are scampering back and forth between various groups, targeting any one of them on any given day during any given election season with their prejudice. It’s like they have a giant dartboard with the words “gay”, “Mexican”, “Muslim”, “black”, “liberal”…you name it; if it’s a minority or a political adversary, it’s up there.
The hostility toward anyone who eats, speaks, dresses, or looks different from them is palpable now. They don’t even try to hide it any more. It’s screamed and strutted and plastered all over signs.
And all those labels, all that blame, all that name-calling, all that anti-”them” is becoming more and more commonplace, and will– and has– inevitably to out and out violence.
If all this isn’t unAmerican enough, along comes this disgusting story, via Think Progress, Gawker, and The Smoking Gun:
Children running for class officer posts at a Mississippi public school are only allowed to compete for certain positions based on their race, according to a memo handed out last week to students.
There now. That works very nicely with the conservative talking points and current trends.
The school has since put up a “media statement” on its website, which reads:
“Student elections have not yet been held at Nettleton Middle School for the 2010-2011 school term. The processes and procedures for student elections are under review. We are reviewing the origin of these processes, historical applications, compliance issues, as well as current implications and ramifications. A statement will be released when review of these processes is complete.”
