Ashamed: Special Comment by my 72-year-old friend

FacebookTwitterRedditDiggStumbleUponTumblrLinkedInPinterestEmailShare

My impassioned 72-year-old Twitter pal, who goes by the name 42bkdodgr, would like to share his feelings about fear mongering, smear tactics, hatred, and obstruction . I am more than happy to oblige.

But first, a personal note from 42bkdodgr:

Many of you may wonder why I chose to use the “ 72 year old friend” as the introduction to my Special Comments. I selected the moniker so readers could see that from my age and life experiences I give a different perspective to the issues of today.

Now for his Special Comment:

Ashamed

I am ashamed by what is happening in our country.

I’m ashamed that we have a political party that has nothing to offer but fear and hate, so it creates chaos on non-issues such as “death panels” and having a “Cultural Center and Mosque near the 9/11 site”.

I’m ashamed that we have a political party that boasts it believes in the Constitution, then does everything to rip it and tear it apart; by wanting to change the First, Fourteenth, and Seventeenth amendments, because they don't meet their ideology.

I’m ashamed that one of the purported leaders of a political party has no understanding what the First Amendment means.  A person who feels she can say whatever she wants without being criticized. A person who believes if you criticize her you are infringing on her freedom of speech, yet doesn’t understand that railing against those who criticize her, she is infringing upon their First Amendment rights.

I’m ashamed that we have a political party who thinks its more important, during our worst economic times, to block or delay everything that would improve or help the lives of the American people that the President or Democrats in Congress propose.

I’m ashamed that a political party would vote NO on practically every bill, even on ideas they previously supported, only because the president has adopted them.

I’m ashamed we have a political party where its more important to make the president look bad than do what is best for the country.

I’m ashamed that we have a news network that purports itself to be “Fair and Balanced”, then does everything to demean and spread misinformation about  our president, while openly supporting the Republican Party and Tea Baggers.

I’m ashamed at what has happened to the civility in this country during the last 18 months. We can thank Rush, the right wing media, especially the “Republican Fox New Network" for this.

I’m ashamed that the right wing likes to treat our president as “not one of us”, with their outrageous accusations that he wasn’t born in the USA and that he is a Muslim, when evidence proves they are wrong.

I can go on and on about what makes me feel ashamed or embarrassed about what is happening in our country, but one thing I do know, we are destroying our country from within and doing Al-Queda’s work.

I am ashamed, but still very hopeful, that Americans who truly believe in the principles of the Constitution and for what it stands will reject the fear and hate being spread, as they have done in the past, and move this country to a better tomorrow.

Many thanks again for another thorough, relevant piece, 42bkdodgr. You often say what many of us are thinking and feeling, and we thank you for your unique perspective.

I've gotten to the point also, that I'm ashamed of this country. What the heck happened here? The make-believe outrage against an Islam education center (already there even) is preposterous. Of course, when the whole "outrage of god fearing Americans" meme is spread by three Republican shadow groups FUNDED by our government (and these groups are telling other countries how horrible it is to restrict anyone's freedom), you've got to wonder: is the devil in charge here? Bibles, guns, constitution, Newt, Glenn, Sarah, Boehner, McConnell, Armey, L. Graham (also Franklin), Rush, Coulter, ....put these all together and it's a combustion. AND IF I MAKE A COMMENT TO A RIGHT WING FRIEND, THEY GET OUT THE GARLIC, CRUCIFIXES, AND A LARGE STAKE....

Bravo! Very well said. My inbox is filled everyday with misinformed, scare tactic emails so full of lies that it makes me sick. I used to simply delete them, but now I am responding to them with the truth (line by line, including web links and footnotes) and sending them back to my Right Wing "friends".

Did anyone hear any railings and protesting against Muslims when GWBush was in office? I didn't. Our 72 yr. old friend is right. Muslims have always lived here, been born and raised here. They have fought our wars for us, died for us, sacrificed for us. And these people, who should know better, are causing our good name to be smirched worse than GWBush and Dick Cheney have done already.

I was just reading about the founding fathers who shaped the declaration & constitution, they all are from eitherEnglish, Irish Welsh or Scottish, or British Colony parents.Obama's dad held a british passport as he was a citizen of the British Commonwealth. The other side of Obama's family came originally from Ireland in the late 1700's and they have family records still in the church there. To me it makes Obama closer to the original American citizens (except the real ones - native Americans) than all of the Michelle Maulkin, Limbaugh & Becks of this world.

Wow! That was true and amazing! It is really sad what has happened but we can repair it. The challenge to not let it happen again, and we will stand against it and work for our country and our people! We have work to do and let's continue! Thank you for an amazing article!

Are you saying only christains are "rill americuns"? As a native american that follows tribal beliefs I am ashamed that you call yourself an american. But please note , my family forgives the "christian" missionary that stole my Grgrandfather and his three siblings and chose to try and "convert" them through beatings and sexual abuse before they escaped and made their way home. I welcome people of all religions into my circle of friends and will continue to do so, your fear mongering is only damaging your children/grandchildren, while I will raise my son to love, honor and respect all people.

I am having trouble following your comments. It appears that you are Islamophoibic and are lumping the Taliban and al Queda with moderate Muslims, thus making all of them the enemy.

Did I misunderstand you? If so, my apologies. If not, then you are definitely part of the problem, not part of the solution and you continue to create division and hate in our country.

How DO you separate the political ideology from the religion here when it is clear there are dueling policies when addressing the religious motivations of our enemies?

We recognize that not all Muslims are jihadists, but that some of America’s enemies are both jihadists and Muslims. By contrast, the policy of the OIC and the White House in banning (yes, banning/censoring/ part of that same 1st amendment) is apparently to deny that religion or jihadism play any role in the Afghan insurgency and to ban or condemn as Islamophobic any words or assertions that contradict this preconceived and false premise.

You should be ashamed that you're allowing your media to spoon-feed you instead of looking at the real facts.

Why aren't you ashamed of the favoritism? Were you out there protesting and writing letters when nativity scenes and Christmas trees were the hot topic and people were complaining about their freedom of religious expression?

Why aren't you ashamed of what you are condemning your grandchildren to when you ignore the fact that we are at war with real people with a political ideology that uses religion to further its agenda?

What aren't you ashamed that this same ideology oppresses people and even sanctions murder?

Why aren't you ashamed that your own government and media are abusing that same 1st amendment by their censorship?
