When Gotta got back, I called her up told her about Chris Matthews meltdown in the 5p version of Hardball on the Shirley Sherrod situation. The take I got from Tweety’s hysteria over the cut of the video was that he was leaning towards looking for some out for Breitbart, some excuse that what he did wasn’t that bad. Digby got part of the transcript (most of teh really crazy bits)-

Dean: I’m not a lawyer Chris, but there are two things about this first of all he cut off the tape he didn’t show the whole story….

Matthew: He didn’t? What did he cut out?

Dean: No, he cut off the stuff about the redemption part

Matthews: I thought that was in there

Dean: No it was not on the tape that was aired on Fox News

Mattews: yes it was

Dean: It was not on what Fox news reported on their blog

Joan Walsh: It was not on the Brietbart …

Matthews: Of course it was on Breitbart. He didn’t edit it. Not that I know about.

Joan Walsh: Chris, Chris. He did. He says he didn’t edit it …

Matthews: Well he didn’t edit it. What did he edit?

Walsh: it’s a 43 minute tape I’m sorry Governor Dean, you can do this …

Dean: No go ahead Joan

Walsh: It’s a 43 minute tape Chris. It walks through her whole racial history. He clipped about three minutes where she seems to be saying I didn’t do my best for this white farmer because he was white. And that’s where it ends. And then later Chris she goes on to tell this amazing …

Matthews: oh I thought that in the tape that he did put out that it did include that part in it. What he did that mischaracterized it was to suggest that it was in current time in her role as a federal official, not back when she was in the cooperative.

Dean: No, he did that too

Walsh: He did that too. There were two lies but he absolutely clipped, or someone clipped the tape before she could say that powerful message of redemption that Democrats believe in.

Matthews: I am right and you’re wrong. Do we have the tape that we can show this because I’m believe is this guys narration is the problem where he said that this is something that goes on in this administration and it suggested heavily that this was her point of view as an appointee of this administration…

Dean: he did that but he also clipped the tape…

Matthews: No it includes in the tape that she changed

Walsh: No it doesn’t Chris you have to trust me and the Governor on this…. it’s not in the tape that Breitbart put out.

Matthews: Yes it is! Yes it is!

As we like to get you guys interesting videos to watch, I went looking for the vid, found it and was in the middle of verifying that it was the right one when it stopped. I copied the code, took it over, and VOILA!!!! It was already the sanitized sane version from the 7pm version with the crazy asshat one from 5pm no where to be found, like a puff of smoke.

At the very least, he should have clarified his meltdown and apologized for being a dick to Joan and Howard, at the most, left up both versions of the segment.

Spittle-spewing, guest-interrupting Tweety has been losing his grip on sanity steadily for the past several years, and he is clearly getting worse. He routinely misstates what is common knowledge and often seems not to know the basic facts of what his own network has been covering incessantly in the hours and days before he goes on. This guy is going to self-destruct before too long.

Joan hasn't written anything on Salon since the 29th. In her op ed on the 29th, the closest she gets is saying there were multiple versions of the clip.

    Nice try.

    @ fazsha

This is why we're having this debate. No where did Joan say, “she and the governor were wrong”. She basically said that, the version Chris saw backed up his statement. She goes on to say that, the version Howard saw backed up his statement. Everyone was right and wrong. You lost all credibility when you said, “sorry to bust your liberal bubble”. What does this have to with anyone being a liberal? Not that I'll receive dime from this debacle, but I do think Breitbart's “Bubble wiil bust”!

Again, Joan did NOT say that the Governor was wrong. You and Breitbart are the reason why cops install video cameras in their patrol cars. Next time tell the truth. It only takes seconds to verify these accusations. @ least the liberal corrected herself, unlike the RIGHT, who will continue to make up crap until they're caught!

In Joan Walsh's Salon tonight, she admits it was she and the governor were wrong, and Chris Matthews was in fact completely right; Breitbarts' version included the redemption bit. Sorry to bust your liberal bubble.

    “I'm right and you're wrong.”-Chris Matthews

He did this back in 2008 at the end of segment hosted by Keith Olbermann and himself. Keith told the pundit they were interviewing, “I'm sorry we ran out of time, because the TWO of US (Keith & Chris) were both yapping away without letting you have your minutes.” While Keith made that comment, he used his hand in a talking gesture to demonstrate his “yapping mouth”. All Chris heard and saw was, “yapping and Keith's hand gesture”. Chris turns to Keith, visibly upset, and said, “I can do this (yapping motion) as well!” During the commercial break, the producers and Keith had to explain to Chris what was said. Chris apologized profusely when then returned to air.

Something is mentally wrong with this guy. He hates to be wrong. He hates the idea that a Bi-racial man is occupying the WH. He called out Obama when the President said, “once the oil leak is capped and the clean-up begins, the media won't be anywhere to be found.” Chris responded by saying, “what in the hell does he mean the media won't be anywhere to be found?!” Well, looks as if Obama was right again.

    For you doubters:

“My parents wouldn't have voted for a Black Man”
    “My wife and I, maybe”
    “My kids, yeah”

“For the first time I didn't view him as an African American giving a speech from the WH. He sounded Presidential tonight”.

  • Keeping It Real

Although I watch Chris Matthews sometimes, he really is a self indulging, non respecting of women, sunny day kind of guy. To think he considered running for the senate seat in Pensylvania, the man really has no real guts and is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

  • Azpsyco1

Tweety is a piece of shit. Always has been. Always will be.

  • Pawl442

Yeah, I couldn't understand it either. Both Dan and Wash were saying that Fux news didn't air the redemption part. Chris was nearly having a fit and I was screaming at the TV to Chris, “you are not listening to what they are saying.” It was like they were in two different rooms. Then it seemed Chris was defending Brietbart. I think Chris was having a long brain fart. Somehow he took great offense, at just the idea of his show being included with the “Sherrod news media avalanche” that occurred. He didn't have to. I watched his show that night and I thought he did an excellent job of getting to the truth.

    While MSNBC was busy 'white-washing' Matthews' hysteria, why didn't they extend this very same courtesy to Joan Walsh who, at the outset of the exchange, repeatedly referred to Sherrod's initial recalcitrance to help the “black farmer”. For example;

Joan Walsh: “…she was racist and she discriminated against a black farmer'
Joan Walsh: “…she helped the black frarmer.”

Walsh's errors were clearly unintentional and subconscious whereas Matthews' errors (and to call them that is to be overly generous) were a deliberate, if not well thought out, expression of his analysis and views of the whole Sherrod debacle. Joan you are far more deserving of a revisionist take of this encounter than “How-dare-you-contradict-, nay disagree, with-me Matthews.
