BP buys Google, Yahoo search words to keep people away from real news on Gulf oil disaster

I didn’t see this report yesterday, but I’m not surprised by it. Nothing BP does, or doesn’t do, surprises me. Why should this be different:

In their most tenacious effort to control the ‘spin’ on the worst oil spill disaster in the history, BP has purchased top internet search engine words so they can re-direct people away from real news on the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe.

BP spokesman Toby Odone confirmed to ABC News that the oil giant had in fact bought internet search terms. So now when someone searches the words ‘oil spill’,  on the internet, the top link will re-direct  them to BP’s official company website.

Hey BP, it’s not gonna work.

How ironic that they redirected searches to avoid the ugly reality that they have created. Do they not realize that by pointing people to the BP site, they emphasize their role? If that’s not negative press, I don’t know what is.

Well, besides this I mean:

High rating keywords is one trick that big biz uses. They also like to control multimedia and spin the news.

Keith said it's actually worse than that. Check MSNBC video site for the
segment, he explains. I can't remember the details at the moment.

It's not as useful for BP a they might have thought… They show up as a “sponsored link,” which immediately lets one know they are paying for it; then the page is still full of other oil disaster news. At least it doesn't block other search results (at least not yet!).

Buying up keywords is one trick that big biz uses. They prefer to control media and spin the news. When you are a liar, then the truth is your enemy.
